Cactus League Game 14 Thread: Mariners at Reds
No Griffey in the lineup as Aaron Harang takes on the Mariners tonight in Goodyear. I'm guessing not many of you are paying attention, but just in case you want to talk about it. Here's a thread.
Lineups are after the jump. Mariners have the broadcast today on Gameday Audio, or you can follow along on Gameday.

You guys are experts on what sounds racist (I say that with a strong hint of sarcasm ;)
so let me tell you this one, is it racist to suggest that someone named “Ginsberg” might be an old dude who owns a deli? Or, more specifically, is it bigoted to suggest it?
Well, it certainly is stereotypical
Obviously someone named Ginsberg is likely Jewish, but to make the jump that they own a deli is stereotypical, and some might say racist.
This was a serious question, right?
It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it. -Aristotle
yeah it was atcually
thanks for the reply. I was having a discussion today, about what type of person you might think of when you hear the name Ginsberg, and I tossed that out. I was called a bigot!!! I’m no bigot, I thought it was just lighthearted, if a little stereotypical. It’s no worse I thought anyway, than thinking that someone named O’Reilly might be a guy who runs a pub.
But I just won’t say anything like that anymore, I guess my sensitivity detector has been permanently marred by coming here ;)
Ginsburg is almost always Jewish
“almost always” Jewish, so that brings along the stereotypes of the type of work “they” generally perform. I frankly never have much of a problem with stereotypes when I try to envision people in life. We all have to start somewhere, just that we should not be shocked or overreact when our stereotype doesn’t play out. It isn’t evil to stereotype but it’s not proper to treat people a certain way as a result of it.
If you say you don’t stereotype, just a little, I would probably say you’re lying. We all have an image of “granny” or “the boss” or “the big burly cop.”
The baseball-bat collision is violent and involves large forces which act over a very short time and which compress the ball to a fraction of its normal size. -- Alan M. Nathan
very rational post
and I think you’re right. It’s bigoted to act in a biased and intolerant way based on stereotypes, but to harbor some or remark on some is not per se evil
I would say though, that the remark, while fairly harmless - still falls in the same general category
as a lot of racially or ethnically based stereotypes which are, in the long run, somewhat harmful.
…so in conclusion….meh.
IAN! I'm on traain!
that was very succinct
I appreciat eit. I’m just going to avoid making any comments because I don’t how they will be taken or they might hurt.
not sure if it's racist
but it’s definitely not kosher

There's a Ford dealership in Harrison.
At least there used to be. My mom says that she drove past that exit once and inexplicably thought of Indiana Jones, not figuring out until later that she’d read the dealership sign.

One of the announcers mentioned that he’s from Chicago and said that White Sox fans don’t recognize the Reds’ 1919 world championship. That seems (a) ridiculously unfair and an oversimplification of history, but mostly (b) a bizarre thing for modern fans to care about.

make it harder for banks to market credit cards to college students.
But honestly, they wouldn’t be doing it if weren’t profitable. Their most profitable customers were the ones on the edge, who could be charged late fees and penalty fees. They intentionally tried to milk those customers for all they could, taking as much money from them as they could without pushing them into bankruptcy. By the time those customers did declare bankruptcy, they had usually paid three or four times what they borrowed in penalty interest and fees, so the banks really didn’t care.

I'm not opposed to interchange fees
I’m just saying, interchange fees plus late fees and penalty interest rates is more profitable than interchange fees alone.

The way I see it
When any kind of electronic transaction is done, someone else has to process that transaction. The gas station you buy gas from has to get their money from the bank now, instead of just getting it from you directly. It adds an intermediary, hence a higher transaction cost.

How a freeloading customer can be unprofitable
In the recent past, I worked as a management consultant for some major credit card issuers. I can tell you that internally, these companies have a common term for customers who pay off their entire balance every month: "freeloaders".
These "freeloaders" aren’t necessarily unprofitable; some are, most aren’t, on average the group is mildly profitable, but not nearly as profitable as those who carry a balance. If you’re wondering how a "freeloading" customer can be unprofitable, there are several factors. For one, about 0.8% of the 2%-3% interchange fee goes to rewards, but a diligent customer can push that to 1.5% or more by optimizing the collection and redemption of rewards points. Beyond that, the credit card issuer finances everything the "freeloader" buys on the card for 15 to 45 days. Finally, there are the various expenses a customer costs: printing and mailing cards and statements, call center service, various card benefits, etc.
The result is that roughly 20% of a credit card issuer’s customers are unprofitable (this can vary tremendously, depending on the company and calculation – for instance, allocation of fixed costs).
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
link the article for chargeoffs
any reputable bank will take 100% of their clients who never default on payments. the fees are certainly punitive, but you’d be shocked how much i write off as bad debt a month from “deadbeats”. credit cards are an unsecured loan and therefore must charge rates to make a profit.
"Life is good....life is good...life is good..life is good" jch
then why give cards to risky customers?
Not saying this is true of your bank, but some banks went out of their way to court risky borrowers, precisely because they could charge higher interest rates and penalty fees.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
it wasnt logical
if you get a credit card from my bank you can pretty much get it from any other one in the country. it takes a 700 credit score with an acceptable debt to income ratio. we piss off lots of people for not extending credit to them when they want it, highlight of my work week.
lots of other banks were tossing out card to folks in the low 600’s/high 500’s, irregardless of debt ratio. they were irresponsible. they made lots of money on those clients in the boom days but wound up exposed in the current economic environment.
jobs is the big issue moving forward. we have a 10% unemployment rate currently and have lots of college students joining the workforce annually.

I still think Chapman starts in the minors
But if he keeps pitching like he’s pitching now, I predict we’ll see a looooot of stories in late March/early April about how he needs time to adjust to life in the U.S. At this point, the casual fan has got to be expecting him to start in Cincinnati.

i'm just going with the idea that
Maloney seemed like the logical guy going into spring training. Yet he only pitched two innings today and Dusty said he is considering moving Maloney into the bullpen.
I guess Wood is still in the running, he is starting tomorrow.
But it seems the Reds are more interested in stretching out Wood and Chapman than any of the other “competition” such as Maloney, Lehr, Wells, and Owings.

Stubbs is really doing well now
I read he got two other hits last night in addition to the inside the park homerun. If he and Dickerson keep up this level of play in the regular season, this could be a fun year (at least from a talent development perspective). It’s always good to see high quality prospects succeed.
