Cactus League Game 12 Thread: Brewers at Reds

Next Game

Milwaukee Brewers
@ Cincinnati Reds

Wednesday, March 17, 2010, 4:05 PM EDT
Goodyear Ballpark

Doug Davis vs Aroldis Chapman

Sunny. Game time temperature around 82.

I'm not sure there's much to care about in this game - one of two for the Reds today. Kip Wells and Justin Lehr will see some innings in this one, so there's that. And I suppose you can get excited about Zach Cozart playing shortstop and hitting second, but as far as I can tell, that's it.

Unless you consider Aroldis Chapman making his first start ever with the Reds to be news! ZOMG!!!! Can you believe it?! He's gonna throw pitches and everything!

Seriously though, I hope Chapman keeps mowing them down. It's kind of fun being the envy of other teams for something. It makes me smile!

Besides Chapman, Wells, and Lehr, Nick Masset and Arthur Rhodes should each get some work today too.

Doug Davis takes the mound for the Brewers. He'll be joined by Scott Schoeneweis, Carlos Villanueva, and Kameron Loe.

Lineups are after the jump. Brewer's have the broadcast today on Gameday Audio, or you can follow along on Gameday.

"Kip Wells has to wonder what the heck is going on here."

“He’s actually pitching OK!” – Brewers announcer

Wells gives up a wind-blown homer, then plunks the next hitter.

Get ready to hit, Gomes.

It doesn't matter what you think, or what I think. It's what Dusty thinks that matters, and he's a knucklehead.

Wait, why would he hit Gomes?

He’s pitching to the other team, and he’s already gotten one of them.

So he’s here

we have two games that count? (As much as spring training games count.)

How do they decide if they count or not?

I think A games are scheduled by MLB

b games are scheduled by the organizations. The Reds claim they will have more B games this year because they share the facility with Cleveland, so it isn’t that hard to have a B game with the Indians.

I've heard of 5 of the 9...

Sappelt? Terrero? Rojas? Negron? I need to catch up here…

by crolfer on Mar 17, 2010 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Sappelt: Great range, average arm, bat is a question

Rojas: Excellent defensive SS, probably won’t hit enough to play everyday, profiles kind of like a Janish right now

Negron: Not as sure, but pretty good defense, decent bat, but not too much of a prospect at this point.

Sappelt is a good one to watch

He hit line drives at 29.8% in August and 42.9% in September. He handled A+ better than A, which is unusual for a move to Sarasota. His offensive ceiling is like Brandon Phillips. He’s a bit less strong and a bit faster, but not the type to amass walks.

Free agent signing this past offseason

Last minor league season was ‘08 in the Baltimore organization. Played independent and Mexican ball last year. Actually played in the big leagues from 2003-07, after coming up in the D-backs organization, played with the O’s in ‘06 and the White Sox in ’07. He’s the Dominican Darnell McDonald, basically.

Not sure who will break camp but one that comes to mind was Brandon Yarbrough, a catcher from the Cards org.

5-2 loss

Castillo continued to hit- he was 2-2 with a run and a triple.
Valaika homered in his only AB.
Chapman went 3 innings, 1 hit (home run), 1 walk, 5 SO.
Masset and Rhodes did well.
Wells failed miserably.
Lehr pitched pretty well… darn.

i don't see Lehr starting in Cincinnati

the Reds don’t seem real interested in stretching him out. He and Lehr aren’t getting many innings, and the innings they are seeing are late in the game. Based on their ussage it seems the competition is between Maloney, Wood, Lincoln, and Chapman.

Volquez, Bailey, Cueto, Chapman, and Leake. The future is so bright I have to wear sunglasses.

My money is on Maloney.

Out of those (taking money into consideration) I feel like Maloney is the best choice (right now). Wood could be effective, but I want to see some more games out of him.

Everyone is reporting that Dusty announced Lincoln back to the bullpen, so that's good

I’d say it’s realistically between Maloney, Chappy, Lehr, and Owings in that order.

If Lehr doesn’t actually start a game in the next week, take him off the table as well.

This quote is absolutely friggin' awesome. From Dusty, via CTrent:
“He got behind on Rickie Weeks and other than that, he was throwing strikes. He looked outstanding. The more I look at him, the more he reminds me of a guy I faced and played with in Puerto Rico, Rogelio Moret, he’s built like him,” Baker said. “He had a nasty slinker today, it was a two-seamer we didn’t even know he had. He’s adding to his repitoire of pitches and he’s more confident. He threw the ball well, Arthur Rhodes threw the ball well, Masset threw the ball well. Lehr threw the ball OK.”

He's not like Rogelio Moret. Moret is not a future H.O.F.'er.

And a new pitch? That is awesome. Sounds like he’s really taking the initiative.

but shouldn’t they know what pitches he has by this point?

by thevole on Mar 17, 2010 8:20 PM EDT up reply actions

When Dusty says "we,"

perhaps he is only referring to himself and his chewin’ stick.

Dusty talked at the beginning of spring like he hadn’t even bothered to look at video on some of the new guys. He’s a lunkhead.

It doesn't matter what you think, or what I think. It's what Dusty thinks that matters, and he's a knucklehead.

it was a nice story when he threw a shutout last year

and he isn’t a bad insurance policy to keep in Louisville. But I really don’t want to ever cash in that insurance policy, or at the most see him for more then a few starts.
