Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

Apparently this was strictly a baseball decision. I guess now they can play both Dunn and Willingham in the outfield.

I drafted Dukes in a fantasy league last year

He did not break out like I hoped. What a wasted talent.

But on the bright side, Taveras just got that much closer to making the Nats.

That's a lot of street cred, right there.

But he’ll have to go to sexual reorientation camp before he steps out on the rough and tumble streets of Vancouver.

Dukes > Gomes

Why not take a chance on this guy? Is he really that much worse than our current options?

by Highlifeman21 on Mar 17, 2010 12:59 PM EDT reply actions

I think the risks are mostly off-the-field.

The Nationals are lying liars

Strictly a baseball decision? No way. Leatherpants already mentioned that the Nationals did the right thing in light of the latest incident. Then the WaPo guy says, no really, it was just a baseball decision.

If he wasn’t performing this spring, the Nats could have just sent Dukes to AAA.

He had to have had some major screwup to just get cut like this. I’ll pass on him. The Reds have plenty of other outfield options.

Nope

Dukes has an option remaining.

He might've raised a big stink if he was sent to AAA

And it’s not like he’s done so great so far with the Nats. Decent but not great hitting with little slugging, and he makes a lot of dumb mistakes. At some point the talent wasn’t panning out in a way that made him worth the risk.

From Rotowire:

(subscription only)

While Nationals GM Mike Rizzo said there was no off-field incident that lead to Dukes’ release, he did imply that Dukes may have been a problem in the team’s clubhouse, the Washington Post reports. Rizzo said the Nationals “will be a more cohesive, united group” without Dukes. “The clubhouse will be more united,” Rizzo said. “We’ll have a better feel around the ballclub. We’ll gain just by that alone.” He also confirmed that the club had been shopping Dukes over the winter but were unable to find any other team willing to trade for him.

by PeteyHendrix on Mar 17, 2010 1:32 PM EDT reply actions

maybe

It was just the fact that he had a personal, full-time babysitter that was the problem. That was an issue with Josh Hamilton when he was with the Reds.

Here's how I see it.

The Nats had come to realize that he wasn’t going to change. They had probably already given him at least one ‘final warning’ and Dukes either called their bluff or Dukes is a sociopath who just can’t help himself.

The Nats tried to trade him but found that no other team in baseball was willing to give up anything of value to take on another organization’s embarrassing problem. So they showed Dukes the door.

They may be able to hold their heads a little bit higher now than if they had just let him play out his contract with babysitters and apologies but I’d bet the main reason they cut him is that the guys in the front office finally looked at each other and said, “Y’know, it’d be great if we could just spend our time running a baseball club.”

“Are penguins on the bottom of the earth and on the top of the earth?”

“No, I think just the bottom. It’s actually called the Antarctic in the southern hem..”

“They could be on the top too. Why don’t we just go there and find out?”

they said it wasn't an off the field incident

and that they felt he’d succeeded in turning his life around.

I think it really was a baseball decision. I ended up seeing him a lot last year (he was down in AAA when the Chiefs played the Bats, and up with the Nats when they played the Yanks). And he’s so bad on D his bat doesn’t make up for it. Corey Patterson was an improvement. (And the Nats ended up dumping him for Norris Hopper.)

I suspect it became clear to the Nats brain trust that this guy just isn’t going to be that good. Maybe if he works hard and all goes well, he’ll be Jonny Gomes. That’s just not worth the hassle of a private babysitter and all that.

You may be right.

But do you really expect the Nats (however disappointed and shamed they may be) to say: “He’s just an incorrigible sociopath who’s more trouble than he’s worth.”

no

But if there was an off the field incident, I think they’d say so. And if they didn’t, the media would.

I'd sign him to a minor league deal, since he's only 25 and has breakout potential

but do we even have an open starting OF slot in AAA?

It doesn't matter what you think, or what I think. It's what Dusty thinks that matters, and he's a knucklehead.

by PeteyHendrix on Mar 17, 2010 1:33 PM EDT reply actions

Not a single team wanted him in trade all winter.

I was thinking about our OF logjam, that could have in AAA:

Yonder Alonso
Juan Francisco
Danny Dorn
Chris Heisey
Todd Frazier
Laynce Nix
Luis Terrero
Josh Anderson

over who?

It’s not like his numbers are jaw dropping. Given what a pain in the ass he appears to be, I wouldn’t sign him.

Right.

If T-Virus, Corey Patterson or Quinton McCracken were still a starting outfielder, yes. Sign him up.

I don’t think he is sufficiently better than Gomes, Dickerson or Stubbs at this point to warrant the risk.

What, me? Being negative? No. Never.
