ahem, HALF-PRICED mac-n-cheese

This place serves a variety of macs-n-cheese, and everyone I’ve had has been excellent. Yesterday, it was the BB King (barbecue chicken and bacon). I’ve also had the Nirvana (chicken and peppers), the Pink Floyd (bacon and carmelized onions), and one with pesto that I can’t remember the name of. All were fantastic (and half-priced!)

Gomes might be locking up all starts against LHP in LF… Fay mentioned platooning Francisco in LF. That would make a good deal of sense if the Reds didn’t have Wlad and END had another year under his belt.

If Stubbs and Wlad both tank, it might be worth bringing Francisco up sooner than planned.

Owings seems to be very much on the fringe

Price talked about him almost as though he’s already a reliever.

I think Maloney has a slight edge on Lehr, who in turn have the edge on Wells, who might be viewed as slightly more viable than Lincoln. Wood is inching into the conversation.

I’d say Wood, Chapman and Owings have about the same odds of making the rotation on Opening Day, though Owings will most certainly be on the team and might be called on to spot start before anyone is brought up.

Last year his WAR was -.3

K/9:5.11
BB/9: 4.81
K/BB: 1.06
LD%: 20.9
FIP of 5.06

What of that is “good”? What of that screams alright? In 2007 his fastball’s velocity was 90 last year it was 88.2. He has missed time in 2008 and 2009 with shoulder issues so I am guessing there is something wrong with his shoulder.

I'm going to give a bed side bullshit medical diagnoses

From what I understand shoulder issues are different then elbow issues. Elbows tend to flame up when there are problems, but are relatively easy to repair.

Shoulders are more complicated… A guy can have shoulder issues and not have a great deal of discomfort. It can be a degenerating process that saps his stuff. That seemed to be Matt Morris’s problem. He was never the same after shoulder surgery in 2004, and he continued to lose velocity until he was out of baseball in 2008, at the age of 34.

Tommy John Surgery is almost routine, it sucks because you lose 1-2 years of productivity between the pre-surgery performance drop off, rehab, and the time it takes to shake off the rust post-op but it is close to a given that a pitcher will return.

Name of all the pitchers you can think of who successfully return from major shoulder surgery?

If this is about Owings specifically

There is some evidence to suggest he wasn’t a great MLB pitcher in the first place. He did all right at first and his bat is/was an anomaly. I thought he was a decent No. 5 guy for the Reds last year.

I also would say that we can probably do better.

I don’t know much about shoulder injuries or even all that much about the TJ procedure, other than they have it down to a very fine science now.

If the Reds didn't have guys like

Maloney, Wood, LeCure, etc I wouldn’t be upset going into opening day with Owings as the 5th starter again. While I have said he isn’t very good, he isn’t an automatic loss either. If he doesn’t continue to lose stuff, and can keep an ERA around 5, he would be adequate for the 5th spot. Most teams don’t have 5 starting pitchers who are capable of at least average work.

The thing is we know what Owings can do. I don’t really see much improvement there. Maloney has a nice minor league track record, but hasn’t had a chance to prove himself yet. He might be god awful, but there is only one way to find out. I see no reason not to give Wood an equal chance to win the spot, Cueto has half as much AAA experience as Wood. Travis Wood’s 2009 earned him the chance to knock down the door to Cincinnati.

LeCure has a solid minor league track record, and will eventually earn his call to the big league roster.

If the Reds didn’t have those three guys, and the competition was simply between Owings, Lehr, Wells, and Lincoln I would be okay with Owings getting the job.

I've heard that about many authors

I’ve been told that I just need to read Hemmingway or Salinger or even Dan Brown. And while there are some fiction books that I’ve really liked over the years, I’d say at least 2/3rds of the time I either force myself to finish the book just to get it done or I drop the book all together and move on to something else. After a while, I just stopped trying because I knew I enjoyed other stuff more.

Red Reporter or follow on Twitter: @redreporter

by Slyde on Mar 16, 2010 12:35 PM EDT up reply actions

It's not impatience

It’s because I have an analytical brain. I actually have to focus myself to enjoy something emotionally (if that even makes sense). Typically when I’m reading, I’m spending more time thinking about what does this mean or where is that going and I miss the story. This is why fiction works better on TV or movies for me. I can analyze and still follow the story.

The reason I prefer non-fiction is because the analysis often happens in line with the story, or stories are usually told in a fashion that allows for the type of analysis that I can handle.

interesting

i had the exact opposite reaction. im told im too analytical as well, but after grad school i couldnt touch anything non-fiction. i spent so many years reading dense philosophical treatises and it completely exhausted me. most non-fiction is written by academics, and most academics just dont know how to write (unless its William Manchester. he’s a dreamboat!) good fiction is easier on the eyes.

by Charlie Scrabbles on Mar 16, 2010 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

You are correct about academics

generally being unable to write in an entertaining or pleasing prose style. For me, fiction is far more satisfying and less constricting precisely because of the ability to freely explore an idea while shedding many of the “rules” of writing. Not that some academics and non-fiction writers don’t, it’s just that the nature of their beasts requires a different approach.

I’d say I still read story based books and I read them for the stories mainly, not the history or whatever. For some reason, I just seem to connect more to nonfiction than fiction. I understand what everyone is saying. It just doesn’t speak to me.

I prefer nonfiction, too

I didn’t used to.

I can’t quite figure out why. Some of the “nonfiction” I read is pretty shallow and fluffy, so it’s nothing to do with it being analytical for me. I have been known to read true crime books, as well as “true” ghost stories.

Somehow, it’s all just a lot more interesting if it’s “real.” Like that book by Lorenzo Carcaterra, Sleepers. I found it really interesting…when I thought it was true. Once it came out that it was a hoax, I lost interest.

by Daedalus on Mar 17, 2010 5:45 AM EDT up reply actions

It doesn't have to be one or the other

People can read whatever they want to read, but for me, it’s like trying to eat broccoli. Some people love it. I know it’s good for me. Sometimes I don’t mind it. But I’d much rather have green beans or peas. So why should I waste time forcing down broccoli when I know I’d enjoy the green beans or peas more?

Another reason I prefer nonfiction is because I tend to read in spurts. I’ll be reading every free moment I have for 2 weeks and then I won’t pick the book up again for a week or three. I think nonfiction allows me to do that more easily without having to try to remember what had happened earlier.

I’ve tried the classics. I loved books like 1984 and Don Quixote, but my pile of books that I couldn’t get into or flat out didn’t enjoy is much bigger than the list of novels that I liked. Maybe I was picking the wrong ones, but I don’t think so. I just don’t enjoy that style of writing as much.

However, since there is so much love for Slaughterhouse Five in this thread, I will go to the library today and pick it up. I’ll have a book report when (if) I finish it.

Age has nothing to do with my reasoning

1. The Reds need a strong LH pinch off the Bench
2. Wlad is a RH batter, Nyx an experienced LH PH
3. The Reds need a guy who can play all three outfield positions well on the bench.Nyx came up as a CF and can still play it well enough not ti hurt the team for a couple of innings if needed.
4. Wlad is acceptable in LF / maybe in right – no way in center
5.A vet like Nyx can accept the role of sitting on the bench for a lot of gaems and be expected to rise to the occasion.
6. Wlad doesn’t have that experience and would be wasted sitting on the bench, he should be at AAA playing everyday.
7. C-Dick is the #4 OF
8. Wlad is not as good as C-Dick
9. Mads=Logical
10. Everyone else = wrong.

Muffin, Muffin, my dear Muffin..

A right handed pitcher is on the mound, the Reds start C-Dick in LF becuase Gomes is going to get nowhere with this pitcher.

the game is tied in the 6th inning, our pitcher is removed because there actually 2 men on base..there is no available LH PH if C-Dick is in the field. Unless Nix or Drew Sutton make the team.

Drew Sutton should make the team over Aaron miles but then Todd Frazier should make it over both of them. Anyway Sutton’s advantage is that he is a switch hitter, his disadvantage is that he lacks the experience of being a Major league PH.

Nix is the guy unless you all want C-Dick to rot on the Bench most of the season or you want Drew Sutton to be the guy up when you need a double off the wall in LCF…

I think maybe some of this

is kind of the product of our own attempt to churn the numbers. I seriously think the Reds issues are a bit convoluted if they are micro-manipulating our outfielders’ ability to hit lefties or righties.

This is just too too too too much control over players have shown a propensity even in the minors of being able to hit .269 and knock out about 20 doubles.

I mean, these are really ordinary outfielders, folks. This is not the type of player that leads us to the Promisio Land and here we are, trying to negotiate over whether one of them can hit a lefty in the 6th inning of a tie game. Crap, let’s tie the game first.

But the chat is what we do, so that will continue. Just sayin’.

Not a bad outing by Wood

3 IP, 1 H, 3 BB, 4 K, no runs

Struggled with his control a bit, but seemed to have pretty good stuff

I don’t think those guys will make it simply because Dickerson is making a strong case for starting in center now, with Stubbs coming off the bench. You shouldn’t need more than 2 centerfielders, especially when you have to really good fielders in Stubbs and Dickerson

by antonay on Mar 15, 2010 6:16 PM EDT reply actions

reply'd?

and they probably won’t put Stubbs on the bench. If they aren’t going to start him in CF, he’ll probably go to Louisville, in which case a guy like Nix has a much better shot of making it.

Don't know about that

I just did not like what I saw out of him at all in relief situations in the past. They need to throw him in some relief situations this spring and see if he’s worth it.

Scrap the Lincoln

If the Reds plan to move this franchise forward, they need to stop thinking washed up righthanders coming off surgery can somehow magically get Cy Young credentials. Give Lincoln a check. “Here’s what we owe you, Mike. You want to pitch. The bus outside marked ‘Lousyville’ leaves in an hour.”

We have way too much young talent to keep fucking around with this guy.

suck up innings in lopsided games. Might as well make sure Lincoln can’t record outs before paying him not to pitch.
