Redreporter Bracket Challenge

I went ahead and renewed our NCAA pick 'em once again through Yahoo. All are welcome to join in and agonize over how bad we each did. The group ID and pass word are after the jump. One year I'd like to sit in the selection room and just listen as to how they do this. You can enter up to three brackets.

The Group ID is 73710

The pass word is: jaybruce

Thanks for putting this up caleb!

after i calm down and get over the ridiculous brackets, I’ll fill one out.

Kansas, Kentucky, Ohio State, Tennessee, and West Virginia all got screwed.

Would’ve been nice for UK to have gotten into Duke’s region.

by 'tHan on Mar 14, 2010 7:31 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

they gave Duke a clean shot to the Elite 8

I can never figure out how they do it. Also, the ACC got 6 teams in? really?

West Virginia and Ohio State

should’ve gone to Duke and syracuse’s bracket. The way the seedings are done, the committee is saying that WVA and OSU are the weakest 2 seeds. That makes no sense!

6 teams? Yeah that’s a little much and I’m sort of surprised but not really that Duke was the 1 seed over WVU

Oh well – some things never change and as much as I hate to admit it – yeah Kentucky got screwed

Dook's bracket is pathetic

Kansas is the #1 overall, and gets the toughest draw…….

Texas is actually kind of terrible right now

7-9 in their last 16, and they don’t have a reliable point guard.

They have the talent o beat KY, but I think UK will find a way to beat them. That is, of course, assuming Texas beats Wake Forest, which I’m not so sure they will.

by 'tHan on Mar 15, 2010 8:43 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't think it's that bad.

I have Turner vs. Wall in the final. Huggins, of course, will keep up the early tournament exits he started in Cincinnati with a 3rd round loss. WVU barely beat UC after all. Twice.

Dook

I was a little surprised to see UK go East and give Dook a No. 1 seed in the south, since IMHO the ACC is a fairly ordinary conference this year.

Purdue may be a two-and-done. Based on how they played Saturday, I’d have sent them to the NIT.

Ohio State is gotta be your darkhorse. Teams that come on that strong in post-season are worth watching.

What OSU did in the Big 10 Tournament could hardly be termed "coming on strong"

they beat Michigan (didn’t make the tournament) on a miracle last second shot.

they beat Illinois (didn’t make the tournament) in Double OT.

they beat Minnesota (last team in the tournament) soundly, but only after Minnesota had to play Michigan State and Purdue.

Right

I agree that their wins may be dampered a bit by the quality of their opponents. But they’ve still won 10/11 and they have Evan Turner, who along with John Wall, could very likely carry his team on a deep tournament run.

by ChiDa on Mar 15, 2010 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions

my thoughts

not worth much and I don’t want to whip this horse if it can’t run.

Winning 10 of 11 against Big 10 teams is difficult, and winning that tournament qualifies a team as a contender. Winning 3 games in 3 days against a pounding opponent is tough.

Not to say other teams, other leagues don’t do the same. But those conference tournaments separate the dogs from the bones.

OSU could have caved in against Michigan and against Illinois. They won those games.

Same thing, down the road, for UK and teams like that. They win the games instead of losing them. Miss. State has to be thinking … w.t.f?

I have thought OSU was a contender for awhile and they have the horses to win 6 in a row, which is basically the only thing you have to do to win the NCAA. It’s a mother bear.

Teams I don’t like this year: Anybody west of Kansas or east of Ohio.

Things are still very, very tough and I don’t think for one minute that the slight econ0mic improvement that ‘appears’ to be happening is anything but totally vulnerable to the next wave of ARMs coming due, the millions out of work, the millions without healthcare and a congress that is always in re-election mode.

it's improved a bit

But it was mainly due to government spending, and is probably not sustainable. Not least because there’s still a lot of toxic debt hiding in the balance sheets.

Yes

Obama and Congress will be under a lot of pressure to reduce spending. Though they’ll also be under pressure to keep spending, with the election looming. So far, though, it looks like they’re cutting back.

In any case, I have serious doubts about whether this kind of recession can be fixed with government spending. When the problem is too much debt, creating more debt seems an unlikely solution.

Hmm. It depends how you define "top"

Peter Schiff didn’t endorse him and he was on the Austrians who predicted the recession. I think any economist who endorses either party doesn’t have real ideals.

Also Keynesianism was what led us into times a crisis. When the US was on the classical gold standard in the early 1900s our monetary policy was very sound. We experienced very minor booms and bust. At the time every economic power other than France was on the classical gold standard and this helped lead to free international trade. Why did it break down? The government was entrusted with the task to keep their monetary promises of making sure the dollar was redeemable in gold. In other words it was not gold or the market the failed it was governments failure to do it’s job. The fund WWI America like the many other powers had to inflate is currency to keep pace to fund the war.

The hiring

is very uneven. Some fields, like computer science, are doing okay. But a lot of fields are worse than ever. In particular, the poorest are suffering the most.

And I think a lot of the hiring is because of government spending, which can’t be sustained. Cash for Clunkers, homebuyers’ credits, that big stimulus package.

Debt remains a huge problem, because everyone is sweeping it under the rug and trying not to look at it. Not just sovereign debt, but toxic commercial mortgages, “ghost inventory” in the residential mortgage market, a new wave of ARMs resetting, etc. None of it has been fixed; it’s just been kicked down the road some.

true

But there’s also the possibility that home prices will continue to go down, and you’ll end up upside down on your mortgage.

All in all, though, a recession can be good for people who have money. During the Great Depression, the wealthy were able to buy up homes, land, heirlooms, jewelry, etc., for pennies on the dollar.

I know a Cincinnati family that (without mentioning names) went from being millionaires to being billionaires even after losing a great deal in the stock market over the last couple of years.By now they've gained back over 60% of their fundfamental losses

During the great depression they purchased everything from paper mills to department store chains for literally nothing in some cases. This old money family is not well known outside the inner circle of the very wealthy in cinti but they have over a billion dollars in assets and have begun to buy more businesses and to conservatively spend in way s that they hope will help out local economy.they also happen to be closet supporters of President Obama, understanding that the only thing that kept the country from falling into another great depression was the stimulus package that President Bush implemented and President Obama has continued in a more regulated fashion.

Even if prices of homes continue to decrease some, it is a very good time to buy a house now esp. for 1st time buyers. With the tax subsidies and the pennies on the dollar purchases that can be made. I doubt if most home purchasers in this economy will end up upside down, and even if they do it will be a small amount of negative value and only for a short while. More stimulus monies will be need to keep the country from falling into a real depression replete with suicides, infanticides, blocks and blocks of bread lines and the elderly being left to die from starvation or lack of medical care…all of which happened on a large scale in the Great Depression.

My comment to you young folks – STAY THE FUCK OUT OF DEBT. If you don’t need it right now don’t buy it. And for sure don’t put it on a credit card.

I don't think FDR was that great

I have a lot of respect for him, but it was more WWII than FDR that ended the Depression.

The Depression, like the current recession, was due to a massive credit bubble popping. I don’t think there’s really much the government can do about it, except let it run its course. The Great Depression reached its low three or four years after the Wall St. crash – coincidentally, when FDR took over. It’s not Obama’s fault, but he took over at about the time of the crash, when things were still getting worse. That’s what I meant when I said whoever took over was going to be the next Hoover.

This is a common error many people make

WWII did not end the depression.

In fact if we look at Consumer Goods/Investment Good growth and how employment recovers a couple years after 1945 it really didn’t recover as nicely as those who argue this point.

Consider some basic micro-economic law. How much did the War cost? How many of the temporary jobs that were create during the war were lost after it was over?

Don’t get me wrong It was not FDR that ‘ended the depression’ by any means.

It was easy to have Fridays off as an art/English major

At least at UD. No studio art classes were ever held on Fridays (which makes sense) and most English electives were T/Th (no clue why). I put a lot of effort into scheduling one Friday-free semester early on, then managed to do it again three or four more times without trying at all.
