Red Reporter Death Match Fantasy League: Who's In?
I want to finalize who is interested in joining the CBSSports.com Fantasy Baseball League. At this point, 14 people (+ me) have expressed interest and I want to make sure there aren't any others dragging their feet. If you are interested, there is still room and we'd love to have more players! For those that are interested, I'll send you an email this weekend with the official invite to the league. Here is the current list of interested players: chazerize, UncleWeez, MixFMKyle, shrguy, thevole, RijoSaboCaseyWKRP, Geki, JD Arney, ben nevis, dmcgee77, Eastwindquinn, Packy, andromache, chesirecat.
The plan right now is to do a head-to-head points league. I know this isn't everybody's favorite, but it looks like we have several people new to fantasy baseball and it is my experience that head-to-head helps the learning curve and also allows lesser players to get lucky so that they aren't out of the competition early in the season. I've played in several leagues were standings were just overall rank in points and most of the teams in those leagues are done by mid-season as one or two good teams run away with it. I know head-to-head doesn't always mean the best team wins, but that's sort of the fun of it.
As for how the points will be structured, I'm still working on that. I don't want to go too sabermetric, but on the other hand I want to make sure a good player is a good player. After the jump I've put the default scoring for the CBSSports.com Commissioner League. I haven't looked at how it will affect individual players to make sure the points are logical, but I wanted to get your opinion as to whether or not you liked the categories used and if you thought the scoring worked. Let me know in the comments.
The draft will be a live draft held on March 22nd at 8pm ET. If you can't make the draft, you can rank your players for an auto-draft and the robots at CBSSports.com will pick your team for you. I'm am planning on this being a keeper league that we will start back up next season. However, do not feel obligated to commit to a second season if this is just your first time playing. If you decide fantasy baseball isn't for you, we'll pass your team on to another willing participant next year.
If you are still thinking about setting up your own fantasy league, just a reminder that you can get 50% off a new CBSSports.com Fantasy Baseball Commissioner league thanks to your good friends at SBNation.com. It's a nice deal, especially if you were going to choose CBSSports.com anyway.

I'm confused...
Does the price thing just apply to establishing your own league? Does this league cost anything? Sorry for being unable to read :P
"People don't kill people. Burning oreo packages kill people."
the league I have set up costs nothing
but if you want to set up your own league, it will cost you $90 via the link above.

And there's still room in my fantasy..
..league.

It’s gonna be perhaps the simplest league in the history of the sport! We’ll be using only NL players and we’ll be using only two statistics: one for hitters and one for pitchers.
If you’re interested follow the link to my FanShot and then get in there, big guy!

I'm up for it
Especially if it’s free. I’ve been looking to join a keeper league so this looks ideal.
The only thing for me is the start time. I’m in the UK so 8pm is 1am start time for me and I know keeper league drafts can drag on for a while…if it could be an earlier start I would appreciate it, but if not I’ll just have to drag myself into work the next day somehow.
I'lll have an orange whip.
I’d love to, but I already have a draft at 8:30 that night. I’d hate to miss it live since the draft is half the fun.

Sure
Sign me up. I’ve been looking for another league to join. I’ve never been in a CBS league and yahoo added a whole bunch of stuff for free this year, but I’m game.

Don't forget The Beer League.
If there is enough interest I’ll restart the beer league again this year.
It is AL only / Autodraft and you can’t adjust your roster when sober.
Really this league is for noobies or lazy people who don’t have what it takes for the official RR league and don’t feel comfortable in FVA’s hot tub..
Message me if your interested in it, but I don’t want to start it if there isn’t enough interest with all the other leagues..
Education is what you get from reading the directions. Experience is what you get from not reading them.
I'm in
My keeper league I have been in for 5 years folded this year so I’m looking for a league. I dont think Ill be able to get my infield of Longoria, Hanley R, Utley, and Votto in this league though.
I can see why everyone folded.
Or was it a 4-team league?
by Brian B on Mar 11, 2010 10:25 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
Started out as 10
dropped to 8 teams. We have 5 keepers. Justin Upton would have been my other keeper in that league this year. My pitching wasnt much to speak of though.
got some homework to do
does anyone have any resources they can recommend for those of us newbies to fontasy baseball? I know the premise and the gist of the whole thing, but past that, I’m kind of lost.
I'm psyched about this
That’s right, psyched.
A few comments on points. Generally, I’m in favor of these, but I’ve got some questions. Shouldn’t 1B’s be greater than BB’s? I don’t think SO’s are all bad, but can we make HIDP’s like -1? And why are SB’s (2) worth more than RBI (1)?
by ben nevis on Mar 11, 2010 10:28 AM EST via mobile reply actions
And SB are a bigger positive than CS are a negative
That goes against all that you’ve taught me, Slyde!
New
I have never played before but would love to join. Thanks
Still interested
Is it too wacky (or perphaps impossible) to assign points to singles, doubles and triples according to wOBA?
Yeah, those guys and the Cincinnati Reds. They're a terrible football team. / Because they're a baseball team? / Exactly. You know who's the worst football team? The Philadelphia Flyers. - Best Show

Whoah
Glad to see there is so much interest. Anybody care how large the league is? I’ll probably cap it at 20. Does anybody think that’s too many?
Some other stuff:
- Those points ARE NOT MY POINTS. Those are the default points from CBSSports. It sounds like you are not happy with them though, so I’ll rework them and get back to you.
- I wanna be clear that this keeper league will not have a separate minor league keeper section. I think that’s too complicated for what we’re trying to do.
- The draft will have a time limit on each pick. With 20 teams, it’s already going to take a while, so you’ll only have 90 seconds to make your pick. You should have plenty of time between picks to get prepared.
Keep the questions coming.

20 seems a little big
but I wouldn’t make a case over it. If it gets too big, it can start to depart from becoming “fantasy” and you’re having to draft MLB bench players.

I would like
to join league if space left?
Thanks
Me me
I would love to join also. Thanks for taking something like this on. I have always wanted to do a keeper league. How many players will we be able to keep at the end of the season?
by Vottonator on Mar 11, 2010 1:49 PM EST via mobile reply actions
unlikely
I only got one comped league and I don’t feel like managing two leagues since I already manage another one that I’ve run for almost a decade now.

I'm still in
Cool with whatever format, points, etc. you guys come up with.

If there's still room
I’m in.
Also, for them that might still be looking for a league, I have a spot open in a really interesting keeper league. The team you’d be taking over made the playoffs last year and finished third without the benefit of the owner making a transaction after the first of July. Menace is also in the league, so I think he’d vouch for it.
Drop me an email if you’re interested.

Here's the deal
We have 24 prospective teams. What I am going to do is invite the first 19 people to say they are via the email attached to their Red Reporter account. Those people have until Monday morning to sign up. If they don’t, I will start going down the list based on when you said you were in.

3. MixFMKyle
4. shrguy
5. thevole
6. RijoSaboCaseyWKRP
7. Geki
8. JD Arney
9. ben nevis
10. dmcgee77
11. Eastwindquinn
12. Packy
13. andromache
14. chesirecat
15. crolfer
16. FilbertFox
17. New Red Machine
18. CamIAm
19. snailbiscuit
Alternates:
1. mdccclxix
2. oklahoma red

I’ll try to make sure the emails are out by 9 am tomorrow morning. If you initially said you’d be interested but have since decided not, please let me know so I can save some time. Thanks!
I’ll put a new suggested points system in this thread either tonight or tomorrow morning.

I gotta say
Between this and the team previews, I am really jazzed by the number of new faces around here. Welcome everybody! Post more!
On points
Does anybody have a problem with using Justin’s system found here:
So, here is the new scoring system that I propose that we should use:
Hitters:
AB -1
H +6
2B +3
3B +6
HR +9
BB +3
SB +2
CS -3
Pitchers
IP +5
K +2
BB -3
HR -13
SV +6
Hold +2
The hitter points, at least, will come close to a player’s actual wRC*10, so it’s grounded in reality. If you like, you can essentially take your team’s hitter point totals, divide by 10, and you’ll have an estimate for how many runs your team would likely have scored had those players actually played together. Neat, right?
Pitcher points…well, I can’t claim they’re as grounded. But pitchers will accumulate comparable totals to hitters, the rankings look intuitive to me, and we’re focusing on things a pitcher can explicitly control (it’s tied to both FIP and innings pitched totals).
Very few players have negative scores in this system—even Willy Taveras!—so it will always be better to have someone playing than no one playing. It will be up to us to find the best replacement we can for our starters when they go down.
I’ve updated the spreadsheet to show 2009 totals for both hitters and pitchers under this scheme. I think the rankings are intuitive and make sense.
http://tinyurl.com/ybhs9el
I like it because it’s fairly simple but it seems to intuitively value players correctly. I could spend all day trying to come up with something else, but I’m guessing I’d just end back right around the same spot. What do you think?
Red Reporter or follow on Twitter: @redreporter
I've now bumped it down to 5 points for saves. 6 was too much.
Everything else seems fine.
BtB’s using this system in their sbnation league:
http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2010/3/9/1364229/introducing-the-beyond-the-box
Some people would rather scrap saves and holds, which I can see (though I worry about consequences).

I think you have to leave them
else relievers have zero value. I ran into this problem in my other league. Only 2 or 3 relievers fall in the top 100 players in the league, which is probably about right, but if you take away saves, they wouldn’t be close.
Red Reporter or follow on Twitter: @redreporter
If you require RP slots, then you have to have some, which gives them some intrinsic value
…though at that point the goal will be to search for people who start but have relief eligibility more than anything else. That’s why I prefer to keep saves too. But I know why people hate them. The Twins situation with Nathan has everyone scrambling to figure out if it’s Rauch or whoever else who will get those save opportunities. Nothing to do with the ballplayer, everything to do with the team, and that’s annoying to me.

SANDBOKX update!
The league is filling up but don’t be silly! Of course there’s room for more!

So... under the scoring system...
That 13 points per home run scared me for a minute but that’s probably because I didn’t see that IP was worth 5 points. I like it.
"People don't kill people. Burning oreo packages kill people."
Yeah, point values are higher
But the advantage of the system is that, at least for offense, points / 10 = runs scored. I think that’s pretty neat.

Definitely.
It’s a good system. Looks a little weird at first glance, but once you look at it, it’s great.

Slyde...
One thing under the scoring system-
Says that CS is worth positive 3 points. Guessing that should be a -3?
