The end of a Long and Stormy Road
341 games, 398.1 innings of relief, a WHIP of 1.39, ERA of 3.97, ERA+ of 112, and 61 saves. That is what David Weathers provided for Cincinnati in his almost 5 years. It wasn't always pretty, but he was a solid relief pitcher who did whatever was asked. He had 33 saves in 2007 11 of those saves required 4 outs or more. He took a beating on RR but in 2006 and 2007 the bullpen would have been pretty barren without him. Seeing that he is 40 and is not being mentioned in any rumors, I am guessing this is the end for "Stormy". For that I raise my glass to him. He didn't have the best stuff, but more often than not he got the job done. Here is to making the most out of your limited skill set and putting together a nice career David!

Anyone have him in the pool?

Very nearly a four-decade player
Debut in ‘91, looks like he’ll end in ’09. 17th all-time in appearances.
And he looked like Shrek.

Stormy deserves some props.
I think pretty much from his first year in a Reds uniform everybody was pretty much waiting for the inevitable implosion you tend to see out of aging relievers without good stuff or control…and yet it never came. He was horribly miscast for most of his time as a Red and still performed admirably. I hope I never see him take the mound for the Reds again, though. I’m still worried he’s gonna sign with us at some point this year.
The Reds don't have a place for him
Coco, Masset, DRH, Rhodes, Burton, pretty much have guaranteed spots. I’m guessing Lincoln and Owings will take the final two spots. Plus the Reds have Bray on the mend, Viola, and a whole host of other names I can’t think of and don’t want to look up.
Volquez, Bailey, Cueto, Chapman, and Leake. The future is so bright I have to wear sunglasses.

I wonder if he'd accept a minor league deal
with the chance of being called up in case of injury or suckitude.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
I doubt it
I think the only reason Weathers came back last year was Cincinnati isn’t that far (all things considered) from his home in Tennessee. I don’t think he would have voluntarily signed with the Brewers even if they offered him more money.
I think he played last year because it was convenient and he still could. I think he would rather be home with his family than being a place holder in Louisville.

The Brewers had an option on Weathers
They declined it.
And if he lives in Tennessee, wouldn’t Louisville be even closer to home?
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
More what i meant was
I don’t think he wants to play minor league ball. Probably the only way he plays this year is if Cincinnati, St. Louis, or Atlanta offer him a contract.
I’m guessing based on his 3.92 ERA last year he could have gotten an MLB contract if he wanted too, but he probably is only willing to play on a guaranteed contract in a city close to home.

I see very few sure things on that list.
Coco’s about it. Masset, DRH, Burton, Lincoln, Owings all have definite suck potential. If that happens, I will not be even a little surprised if the Reds offer Stormy a deal and he takes it. It won’t happen now, but at some point in the early part of the season, I could absolutely see it. I don’t think you’re really reading the market very well Justin, nobody other than the Reds has had much interest in David Weathers for years, which is why we didn’t trade him until last year and the only thing we got in return was salary relief. I’d be shocked if he was offered a major league deal after his 1.32 K/BB, 1.45 HR/9, and ridiculously obvious BABIP/LOB% luck leading to his low-ish ERA/WHIP last year.
there are a lot of GM's who will just see his ERA and think he had a quality year
I’m not saying they are right.

I think this is a myth.
These days I don’t think there are ‘a lot’ of GMs who look at Ws and ERA and BA and RBI and don’t dig much deeper. Too much money is being spent on players and too many GMs lose their jobs every year (though not as many as you might think) for these guys to just look at the backs of baseball cards.
I could be wrong but I think a distinct majority of MLB GMs must be doing their due diligence. Sports talk radio and the like haven’t changed much over the past ten years so maybe it seems like reliance on ‘counting stats’ and the like is still the industry-wide folly it’s always been but I doubt it really is.

gotta agree, FVA
Talk radio guys give us the illusion that the stats tell the story.
Hell, I am absolutely mind-boggled looking at the amount of data that is available, not counting what the personal phone calls reveal.
Like calling the guy’s medical specialist to see if his grip is 1.3 percent worse than last year.
Stormy might get a MiLB contract but he’d be a fool to think his career can extend much past a summer fling just to get him the Bill Veeck Award for pitching in 3 decades.

you may be right
i may be a couple of years behind in my judgment of the intelligence of the industry. Still Ed Wade did just get an extension, and Dusty sits on our bench makes decisions.
