A deal with Gomes is still apparently possible... But Wells? Really?

I'm not saying you're a liar
I’m just saying I can’t believe you.
Also: 8 of the 19 pitchers on the 2002 Pirates have now been in the Reds Organization. And I bet you Joe Biemel will be eventually. And Duaner? Oh, he can suck it.
"And then there was the USAID guy in Kandahar who drove a giant pink Cadillac, which the locals set on fire one day. If you wanted to destroy something symbolic during a riot, you just could not do better than that. Good stuff." - Ghosts of Alexander
You just knew that we
couldn’t make it through unscathed.
A Pete Rose by any other name would still smell of cheap hookers and pinetar.

well i mean somebody's gotta pitch in Louisville
I don’t see it as a bad thing. Every organization keeps guys like this around. I mean as long as the Reds don’t seriously consider Wells and Lehr for a long term big league role.
If there are a few injuries at the big league level, and Chapman, Wood, and Maloney are pressed into MLB service, it is probably good to keep Lehr and Wells in AAA, rather than promote somebody from AA who isn’t ready. Or to put Lehr and Wells on the big league roster, if Wood and Chapman aren’t ready yet.

The Reds should seriously consider a 4 man rotation.

They only need a spot starter 5 times through May 17th.
Or less, if Bronson prefers to work on 4 days’ rest.
But with Owings out of options and Maloney with nothing more to prove at AAA, I can’t see Wells doing anything for the Reds but collecting spring training meal money, bruising our minor league catchers with errant pitches, and earning us about $50,000 cash when we jettison him the final week of March to a team with a lot of injuries.

I actually think we'll see him as the 5th SP for all of April, and possibly the 1st 2 weeks in May, maybe the 17th even
He’ll be gone by May 17th, and some other choad will get the 5th SP nod

Word from Mark Shelton regarding
Kip Wells will be added to the mix for the fifth spot of the rotation battle. Wells agreed to a Minor League deal a couple of days ago.
“We told him at the end of last year that if nothing else happened for him elsewhere, we’d bring him back,” Jocketty said. “He did well for us at the end of the season.”
Wells, signed to a Minor League deal in July, became a fill-in starter for the Reds late in the season and was 2-1 with a 3.65 ERA in four September starts.

yeah
he will get a “chance”, but that is about it. He will get 1 start or will be the 2nd guy out of the shoot early in spring training, but he will have to seriously out pitch the competition to actually win a spot in the rotation. Like I mean Maloney, Owings, and Wood will have to probably put up an ERA north of 10, and he will have to keep an ERA under 1.
He will open in Louisville.

I agree
but I am less angry about this signing when Walt paints it as: you done good fer us, we’ll give ya a job if no one else will.

It happens a lot
and for what Cincinnati needed last season, Wells filled the bill. I mean i guess they could have given starts to LeCure, but he really isn’t a special prospect. It would have been jumping the gun a bit to give Travis Wood some starts, plus he threw a lot of minor league innings. You have to remember by the time Wells entered the rotation Harang, Volquez, Cueto, were on the shelf, and Owings had pitched himself out of the rotation. That is 4/5th of the opening day rotation gone.
I am guessing he probably meant if nobody gives you a major league contract, or if no team gives you a better shot at earning a major league spot, there is a minor league contract with a spring training invitation waiting for you in Cincinnati.

Here's why they brought Wells back
if no team gives you a better shot at earning a major league spot
That really says to me that Kip Wells is the stop gap 5th SP out of ST, and they want to get an extended look at more long-term solutions to the BOR.

you and i took that differently
i am not saying the Reds will give him a greater chance at earning a major league spot. Wells spent last year in the organization, and he is probably comfortable with the Cincinnati and Louisville staff, so why move on. I mean he will make the same pitching in AAA Louisville that he will make in AAA Scranton or AAA Charlotte.

$ isn't the point. Getting a shot to be a BOR starter is the carrot for Wells.
The Reds have 4 guys locked into the rotation, which leaves the 5th spot wide open. Wells is a known commodity to the Reds, as is a guy like Lehr. Unknown commodities are Maloney and Owings. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Reds felt that Maloney was a better solution post May as a stop gap until Chapman’s ready, but I have this really bad feeling that Wells is the 5th SP to open up the season until probably mid-May, and then we won’t see Wells again for Cincinnati unless someone’s injured.
I don’t see Wells having as good of a shot to make a major league roster with his other options.

The thing is though
If we’re giving Kip Fucking Wells that chance, why not do the same thing for Jonny Gomes?

Probably did
i’m guessing the Reds have offered Gomes a minor league contract, and Gomes is waiting to see if he can get a major league contract from another team.

Well, they did do the same thing for Jonny Gomes.
There’s an offer on the table. Or are you saying if Wells gets a minor league deal, Gomes should get a major league deal?

Minor league deal?
I can see Gomes and Nix tearing up AAA while the Reds slowly fade around mid-June.

Wells
is like about 80 percent (forgive me, but I didn’t do the math) of all pitchers in MLB who are a weekend outing away from either being a reclamation project or set adrift. Jocketty has a history of seeing how that worked in St. Lousy.
I think the notion is:
- check his pulse. can he find the ballpark from where he is?
-
— sign him before somebody else does.
And if he can go 4-2 with an ERA of something under 5.00, then he’s probably as good as it needs to get.
All in all, the four wins are what matters.
