Arroyo's Deferred Money
We still don't know how much he's getting in 2011, but John Fay reports he'll be paid until 2021, suggesting it could be well under $13M. It also suggests things are more austere than they seem. Jocketty sez: "If he hadn’t [deferred the money], we’d be way, way over budget."
I can only guess that Jocketty is factoring in offers to Rhodes and Cairo here. I still see a couple million left over - even in the event of bringing both veterans back, but we won't have a clear picture until the arbitration-eligible guys settle up. Expect the Reds to wait out the market.

Are there even success cases for this?
It only makes this deal more palatable if it allows them do something in 2011, besides just maintain the status quo. I think it hurts them every year after. Everything Jocketty said suggests it’s only going to keep the band together.

I guess the assumption is that the Reds are going to grow into a money-making franchise.
To be fair, the few million the Reds are paying the Kid every year aren’t handicapping this team. But it seems like basically what this is is the Reds taking out a loan on Arroyo’s services, paying him interest later on. So yeah, I guess it only works right if it’ll mean the Reds are saw-toothed killers in 2011/2

Reds are already a money-making franchise
the budget is to make sure they keep clearing a healthy profit.
I get a bad feeling about Bronson going forward. The kind of feeling when you have a hot streak at the black jack table and know you should walk away but think what the hell I will take another couple hands.
The deal really only makes sense if they now trade a Wood/Bailey for a major position piece in LF or SS. Otherwise I just dont see Bronson outperforming the Reds younger and cheaper starting pitchers.
I agree with all of this.

Better plan was to add one year to his option tops
Not sure he should have been extended beyond the option year he had coming, but if we were going to do it, it should have been for one extra year only for a total value of maybe $24 mil. Hard to justify what we have now invested in a pitcher who is likely to be viewed as no better than a 4th starter by the end of the year. I am glad Bronson is here, but I wish it were for less money and years.
people said that in 2007 though
i guess since he proved me wrong once, i am more gun shy to criticize this deal.

We also don't know how it affects his '12 and '13 salary
So it’s hard to pass to judgment. But it doesn’t seem worthwhile to pay his base salary and kick a multi-million dollar can down the road if you can’t do anything with the flexibility. And a three-year deal to a pitcher in his mid-30s isn’t really a growth investment. I’d be glad to have Arroyo for the next TWO seasons at anywhere south of $11M, but it’s possible this contract is, at the least, an annoyance for years to come.

Thanks for the vote of confidence
I’m not sure I’ve been entirely consistent with what I think about the deal, but what I don’t like about it is, basically, the guaranteed third year and fact that it basically exists to get us more Arroyo. But maybe the latter won’t hold true.
As ken points out, the deferred money is probably negligible.

They'll be paying Chapman until 2020 also
Ideally, Chapman would get an extension that wipes most of that out – but these two contracts could also amount to paying a non-existent 26th player $3M-$4M for the last half of this decade.

depends on what you consider money
Personally, I think debt should be considered money, and if you include debt, there’s not a lot of inflation. All those bad mortgages, all those credit cards written off as uncollectable, all those credit default swaps and other highly leveraged “assets” that actually worthless…that is all money that has vanished. More than offsetting QE2, 3, 4, etc.

I don't mind this at all
I make no claim of having even a smidgen of competence as far as money and business go, but it seems to me that $2-3M a year is small potatoes in the grand scheme of running a ballclub.
The brass has every reason to expect the Reds to remain competitive and keep increasing the numbers of butts in the seats.
What it really means to me is they’re banking on winning and I like that.
by GlennBraggsSwingAndMissBrokenBat on Dec 8, 2010 10:55 AM EST reply actions
It's not the $2-3M so much
as the $2-$3M added to the base salary of Arroyo for 3 years – all in the service of bringing back Cairo, Rhodes and Arroyo himself and calling it a day. It doesn’t seem like a great return to sink $35M into Arroyo just to hang on to a group of guys whose average age is like 37. I don’t mind these moves in isolation, but it doesn’t have the appearance of a team that’s planning well for the future.
Jocketty could be playing coy here.

Good point
But let’s be realistic. We have a lot of good young players, all around the same age. We’re not going to be able to keep all of them, or even most of them, starting after next year.
Our window of opportunity is right now.
If Walt thinks keeping Cairo and Rhodes gives this team a better chance of winning a championship than a couple young, cheap replacements, fine.

I'm getting the feeling more and more
that old man Rhodes won’t be back. He seems to be in high demand, and coveted by big money teams. Sad, but I wouldn’t get in a bidding war over him, unless he’ll give us a discount, which I doubt. I guess he probably would’ve accepted arbitration had we offered, but it sure woulda been nice to get a draft pick for him….

Mr. Rhodes held the oppositiion scoreless in 26 of his final 30 games, and allowed only 2 HR in his final 20+ innings.
Sure he had plantar fasciitis, but he was tremendously effective whilst pitching through that injury and flipping the bird to Father Time.

The limping was due to the plantar faciitis.

Besides, I’d rather have a BAMF who limped to the mound to gun you down than a long-haired sissy jogging to and from the hill with glowing locks bouncing along. Holy crap, Bronson looks like a fancy lad.

he hit almost as well as Gomes did last season
despite a BABIP nearly 100 points lower. For the upside Pena represents, I don’t think $10 million is a crazy amount, especially for the Cubs who need a 1B, a LH, and someone with power. He’s all three.
Though as I have been saying lately, the market is kinda insane this winter, so far.
i agree with this. stupid cubs, yes. but i also don't think he's washed up.
i don’t think it’s that bad of a deal either. at age 31 he OPS’d .893 and had 39 HR. while his slashes tanked last year, he still hit 28. i wouldn’t cast him out to sea just yet.
$10 mil is a drop in the bucket for the cubs. it’s not like they’re giving him 4 years $50 million. it’s not a bad deal by any means.
he could totally blow ass (which would be great) but he could also be adrian beltre.

I think it's a bad deal for the Cubs
but as I was told on another thread, his BABIP was like .220 last year. Still seems like a high price to pay for a 3 true outcomes guy with a good glove (albeit at 1B).
Joey Votto on Colin Cowherd: "I don’t know who he is"
ouch, yeah he's due to bounce back.
i mean, i wouldn’t want the reds to pay $10mm for a guy coming off a 1 WAR season… but that’s not a lot of money for the Cubs. he’ll probably hit a lot better (and for more power) playing in this division too. pitching isn’t as good, parks are more hitter-friendly… i don’t think it’s as bad as it seems.
this also tells me the cubs are getting serious about the 2011 offseason when they’ll have a shit ton of money to play with.
also: Reds are pretty set at 1b
and dudes who can’t play LF but will be out there anyways.

Good move
The extension was essentially for 2 years and $22M because they picked up the $13M option. I wasn’t crazy about the extension but thought it was defensible. The true cost of the extension is now a bit less, though we can’t say by how much without knowing the payouts. The present value of a $1M payout in 2021 is probably between $600k and $700k depending on the interest rate.
Plus, this frees up some payroll (though I’m pretty meh on this if it’s just to re-sign Rhodes/Cairo).
That's my main problem with it
All these acrobatics and 3 guaranteed years to Arroyo (2 of them no-trade), just to add two veterans teetering on the cliff.
If it’s a $1M payout per year after the contract ends, it does look pretty good. That could mean:
2010: $8M
2011: $9M
2012: $9M
$1m/yr until 2021

we don’t think his every move is golden.
He has made some terrible moves; extending Lincoln, signing Taveras, are the first two I can think off.
But like field managers, I have a hard time finding a GM who hasn’t made terrible moves. I think on the whole things like the Chapman signing, letting the farm system develop, and what not out weigh the bad things.

I think even if Chapman's a "bust"
(i.e. he doesn’t develop into an Ace), he’s at least a financial neutral contract as any overpayment is made up by Butts in seats and national/worldwide attention at having the world’s fastest fireballer possibly ever. 105 MPH puts butts in seats and gets people excited to see a baseball game, because you get to say, I saw Aroldis Chapman throw 103, 104, 105 MPH.

I get people have tasted the winning this year...
And now think we should be trying to win the World Series this year, but what would you want him to do? Should they vastly overpay for Greinke, Cliff Lee, Carl Crawford, etc., and pray that they can perform up to their salary level for at least half of their contract?
Until the fans show up for a full season, the smart business move is to put together an above average team that is #1 or #2 prospect to win the division year-in and year-out. If/when the fans start selling out every important game and at least make a decent showing for the weekday games, then, you start going committing the big bucks, because you know you’re not the short-stack at the table and can afford to take some bigger risks.
Jocketty claims...
the Reds are on the razor’s edge in terms of payroll. He dedicates big money to Arroyo for 2012 and 2013 to save a little in 2011, then he goes multiple years for utility infielder who can’t play shortstop. His moves are just weird.
Lohse has a no-trade clause. Please tell your friends.
you don't know if he dedicated big money for 2012 and 2013
there will be deferred money until 2021. i think the most likely scenario would be
2011: $8 mil
2012: $9 mil
2013: $9 mil
and then $1 mil a year til 2021 as someone layed out before somewhere in here. that is certainly not big money and i think its a fair deal that won’t hamstring the organization for the next three years or the many after

I think Farney is asking you to attribute your "razor's edge" verbiage.
"Don't turn off the TV if we've still got bats in our hands." - Dusty Baker
Here it is...
A good portion of Bronson Arroyo’s salary for the 2011 is deferred. Arroyo was set to make $13 million under the option that the club picked up. However, his new 3-year, $35 million contract has deferred money and will pay him all the way to 2021.
But don’t expect the Reds to go on a spending spree with the money saved.
"It helps us maintain what we have," Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said. "If he hadn’t done that, we’d be way, way over budget."

I just don't think $2MM for 2 years

"Don't turn off the TV if we've still got bats in our hands." - Dusty Baker
Remember they were saying this stuff last year
And then we signed Chapman…
Not saying that’s happening this year, but I guess my question is, what do you want Walt to do? Do you want him to go for the “big kill”? I just don’t think it makes sense long-term to overpay in this free agent market. Bob, Walt, & Dusty have brought this team out of the depths and regardless of my early apprehensions, they’ve earned my trust until they prove otherwise.
It seems to me like they have a clear vision for what they would like to do… maintain the status quo this year, make the beginning efforts of signing Votto and/or Bruce to longer term deals, and be ready to hear trade offers, but not be too desperate.
This is a nice view
I am not sure I agree with their vision, but this is about the best optimistic outlook I see.
And "way, way over budget" could change midway through the
season if the Reds are having a big year at the gate. Your assumptions are all based on the here-and-now. There’s no scope to your argument.
Hell that could change in three days. If there’s one thing that Walt has done since getting here it’s surprising the shit out of everyone.
Perhaps Bob gave him a starting line of $X. Then, perhaps, something comes up (like Greinke) and that line is pushed to $XX.

Cairo can play SS
At least as well as Slo-Cab.
His probably is that he wears out if he plays too much. Come to think of it, that’s kind of a problem with Cabrera, too.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Whew, I don't know
I don’t think he’d be as good at SS as Cabrera even. Even if you say their range is equal, I’d have to give Cabbie the edge in instincts and in making errors as well. The thought of Cairo at SS is pretty scary.

i tend to agree
i mean Cairo isn’t a huge deal, if the contract isn’t for more than $1.5M total. It could just be some small dead weight. Lets face it, I don’t think Walt expects Cairo to do anything more than he did last year, which is PH, spot start, and “play the game right”.
"It is a damn poor mind indeed which can't think of at least two ways to spell any word."
-President Andrew Jackson
I'm personally pretty happy with Walt right now...
I think it’s pretty clear everyone is severely overpaying for “marquee” players. I think Walt knows that he’s got a cupboard full of prospects that will be a lot more valuable in getting us over the top in 2011 or 2012 when we’re competing for the division mid-season with a 0.5-2 year rental without hamstringing us for the next 5-10 years (see Griffey Jr., Ken and Milton, Eric) with high-risk contracts.
Also, my gut instinct is that this team is basically guaranteed to play .500 ball unless a handful of key players get season-ruining injuries and could win as many as 95 games if the younger players continue to progress.
Me too. The only thing I would've liked was to see a AAA prospect get this job.
But I also didn’t like the idea of counting on a rookie to do a 36 year old’s job.
"I love this team and I love Cincinnati." - Dusty Baker on Clinchmas Day
It sounds like from Dusty's soundbyte earlier...
…that Francisco probably will get the majority of backup starts for Rolen (approx. 30-40 if Rolen starts 100-120) so long as he doesn’t completely suck.
So, in my mind, Cairo is there to serve primarily as a PH and a stop-gap if we Votto/Rolen get hit by the injury bug so we don’t have Ramon playing 1B.
I'd like to know the difference between Eric Milton and Bronson Arroyo
as far as their respective contracts go.
Anyway, I don’t think it is too hard to imagine that Bronson ‘11-’13 looks a lot like Milton ‘04-’06.
I think there's probably some good arguments to be made against Arroyo's contract
But comparing him to Milton is not a good one.
Milton was considerably younger… started out extremely hot, cooled off, then had a “contract year” where the Reds way overpaid for him.
Arroyo’s been the definition of consistency the last 6 years and far exceeded Milton’s WAR for that “contract year”.
I would like to add
that when the Reds signed Milton, they desperately needed any competent pitching they could find. The Reds right now have a surplus of good and young and cheap pitching. At least the rationale for the Milton signing was more clear. Arroyo keeps Chapman in the pen or the minors, or keeps Leake in the pen or minors, or keeps Wood in the minors, or moves someone else to the ‘pen. We don’t need Arroyo, and I don’t think he will outpitch any of those guys, actually.
I’m down on the Arroyo signing, as you can tell. But it is only one piece of the puzzle that is taking shape.
Didn't Milton lead the league in HR allowed the year before signing his deal to pitch in GABP?
"He’s like if Ron Gant and Eric Davis had a white baby." -- GlennBraggsSwingAndMissBrokenBat on Drew Stubbs
Arroyo isn't an ace...
But he’s the “stopper” for the Reds if/when we have a bad run of starting pitching from our younger pitchers. The only pitcher (besides Arroyo) that I feel relatively confident gives us a good chance to win every 5th start is Cueto. Volquez, Bailey, Wood, Leake, Chapman could all be #1/#2-type material next year, but they could also blow up and then, where are we?
Except my money is on Bronson as the one to blow up
bet 4 of those guys pitch better than Bronson next year.
I think WAR is probably the best bet for a singular stat
Despite it’s flaws.

I’m probably Cairo’s biggest fan here, but two years is too much. He’d probably be happy to get a big league deal of any sort. Was anyone else going to offer him two years? At his age?
He has been a solid utility guy, who somehow always manages to make his way to the big league roster even when signed to minor league deals, but I seriously doubt there were many teams clamoring to sign him.

"It is a damn poor mind indeed which can't think of at least two ways to spell any word."
-President Andrew Jackson
The good news is...
It seems like the Reds have been linked (by varying degrees of truthiness) to just about every free agent out there, so maybe this is just a ruse while we work out that 5-way trade for Hanley.
I think they're afraid Janish won't work out
Either he’ll be exposed if he plays every day, or he’ll be injured or something, and they’ll have no backup. (I would be willing to take a flyer on Negron or Cozart, but I have a feeling Walt wouldn’t be. Not with a possible WS on the line.)
Probably the best solution would be to sign a veteran guy who wouldn’t mind being the backup, not the starter, but I don’t if there’s anyone out there like that. And if there were, I’m afraid he’d become the starter if Janish hit a one week slump (or even a one game slump).

Hey KRP.
I brought this up a long time ago and never got an answer. Any thoughts as to why the logo for our beloved blog is an asian George Michael?
Wear something sexy to my funeral.
Come on, you know how many of us have been caught making self love in public bathrooms.
Oh, and are Asian.

but I’m not sure if it’s dumb or not. Help me out, folks. Is a Team Canada hockey sweater with “Votto 19” on the back really stupid or really killa sweet?

serious question
I’m trying to find an EPL jersey for a buddy for his birthday, and I’m not sure what to really look for in terms of authentic vs. replica (do they do futbol jerseys like that?)
Any suggestions?

is American (so you don’t get hosed on shipping) and well-labled as to whats authentic, what’s replica.
Authentic’ll be expensive of course, but its better than trying your luck on the e-bays

Replica is usually just as good as authentic, too
It might be missing a patch or two, but that’s generally about it.

Perhaps I'm reading too much into this
but would the Reds really have been way, way over budget if they hadn’t restructured Arroyo’s contract for this season? I remember most of the figures people coming up being anywhere from slightly below to slightly above and that included the slight raise in budget and increase in salaries due to arb and resigning Cairo and Rhodes. So why would they be way, way over as Jocketty said? Perhaps a FA signing or trade is on the horizon? Or maybe not
Jocketty is mental
but we love him, so thats all that matters. Just sit back, and relax. Enjoy our amazing farm system and our future.

So I guess this means Cliff Lee is going to the Yankees. I’ll guess 6 years, $150 million

Best place for Cairo
… is on one of Joe Torre’s recent teams. Lots of big name starters making lots of money playing 150+ games at their positions. Cairo sits next to Joe on the bench serving more as a coach than a player. I don’t know what is funnier, the thoughts above on Cairo’s range and playing SS, or Dusty putting him into the 4 or 5 hole 40 or 50 times next year with the expectation that he will repeat his successful 2010 campaign.
Give him credit, he had a nice year, but how many more years should we pay him for it? We’ll probably be looking at something like .240/.290/.350 from a 37 year old mascarading as our primary back up at 1B/3B with a bunch of PH AB’s. Is that the kind of line we want from a guy playing these postions? And two years?
THE SKY IS FALLING!!! THE SKY IS FALLING!!!
- The problem with Griffey’s contract wasn’t that there was a bunch of deferred money; it’s that in Seattle he averaged 608 PA/yr, had an OPS+ of 149, and won 10 straight Gold Gloves, while in Cinci he averaged 450 PA/yr with an OPS+ of 121 and became an embarassment in the outfield, all mostly because he was constantly injured. If he’d played anywhere near what or as often as expected, no one would be bitching.
- As such, there’s no reason to think Arroyo’s deferred money will be a bad investment; if Arroyo pitches like he has the past 5 years, no one (including Bob’s bean counters) will care.
- Cairo is getting $2M over 2 years – big whoop. That should be an amount of money that the Reds can easily bury if he completely stinks up the place.
I’ll be shocked if Jockety’s done. I think he’s saving money where he can now because he knows there’s a piece out there he can get, but he’ll need a bit more cash than he currently has to get it. I can’t imagine he thinks this team, as constructed, looks like an improvement over last year.
