Jocketty discusses Zach Greinke
Asked about speculation of the Reds interest in Royals ace Zack Greinke:
"I haven't had any discussions with them," Jocketty said.
Updates on the quarter hour.
Jocketty also dished at length on deals in the works for the Reds' arb-eligible players:
"I don't see anything happening on any of that stuff here," Jocketty said.

I prefer TFM's rumors.

Apparently every player in the Mets org. is on the table, including Reyes and David Wright.
I’m sure they’ll cost too much, but Reyes on a one year deal would be awesome.

The outlaw!

What else is available in NY?
I’d love to see Reyes with the Mets, too, but you’ve got to sign him. Plus what does it take to get him? Mets need SP, but to take on the money that Reyes will cost if signed, they would almost have to trade Arroyo just to free some $$, or get Cordero off the books somehow. They also need catching help and could be interested in one of the Red minor league catchers. Alonso or Francisco could go, but they don’t seem to fit on the Mets. Wouldn’t mind see Pagan in a Red uniform either.
Also, germane to the Yonder discussion:
“I think right now, Yonder is a guy that still figures in the organization,” Jocketty said. “It gives us protection. He believes that he’s working this winter to come in and compete for a spot on the bench next year to play some first and left field and be a left-handed hitter off the bench.”
I could see this being true, I could see Walt driving up the trade cost, or I could see it being hooey.
The question is, how much is “some” left field?

you tried retrograde wheelbarrow, but gave up when the tears started pouring
(everyone loves xkcd, right?)

I'd love to see "some" meaning "significant"
Also, wasn’t there talk of Yonder working out at third? He could take care of a couple perceived weak spots if he were at all passable at those spots.

Reading that quote
(which, BTW, comes from Sheldon’s blog. Read the ‘same’ quote on Fay’s blog and you get an entirely different feeling. Honestly, I can’t read him anymore, he just messes too much up)
I think it’s possible that Alonso is being viewed as the tentative platoon partner for Gomes in left, but they don’t really want to say that publicly yet.

So then why did he not play left last year?
by Eastwindquinn on Dec 6, 2010 7:58 PM EST up reply actions
I think they trade him only after the Votto extention.
This could get ugly.

He did, just not for very long

It is very wasy to read Walt
1. He is driving down expectations for big moves, and waiting for the Grienke market to develop and FA cost to go down……Remeber how last minute O Cab was?
2. Alonso is talented and he is not going to give him away for free, especially since the he will likely mash in AAA next year and be more valuable at the deadline
Calling it – Leake, Yonder, and Maloney for Grienke
I would LOVE to see Jose Reyes in a Reds uniform.

If I were Royals GM
I’d laugh my ass off at that offer
But I am not, so I’d probably pull the trigger

substitute Wood for Yonder
and it would definitely raise their eyebrows.

Yeah, I could see them asking for 2 pitchers back
They are loaded in young hitting prospects. If they trade Greinke, they’d need pitching to contend.

Is Dayton Moore still in KC? He might take Yonder and a PB&J for Grienke.

hell
he might take PB&J alone just as long as it is made with Smuckers Jelly and Walt serves it to him in a butler’s costume.

let's be clear
Yonder is likely the least attractive top prospect in the Reds system. They already have 2 young 1B options that may be better than Alonso already (Butler definitely is).

least attractive *to the Royals*
not generally. But yeah, I don’t think the Royals would have any interest in Yonder.

Who knows what the eventual trade price will be
or more importantly when, but right now they’re talking about 2 pitchers with Greinke like upside, a premium prospect and more. I can understand asking high to start with but that seems pointless to me.
wouldn't 2 pitchers with Greinke's upside by 2 premium prospects?

thing is
the Royals have Butler and Hosmer for 1B. They have Moustakas, who’s a catcher now, but IIRC may not stick there. Also, that Hawaiian kid Ka’aihue is a 1B/DH type too. Even if they like Yonder’s tools, there’s zero spot for him in KC. They need OF prospects and high upside arms, I’d bet

What about Francisco used the same way?
I think Francisco could be used the same way if they don’t want to/can’t use Alonso for these spots. Can Francisco handle 30 starts at 3B, 30 starts in LF and 10 starts at 1B? I can’t see resigning Cairo to cover 1B/3G again and expect him to come anywhere close to hitting what he did LY. Rolen is going to need the time off and Francisco’s lefty bat is a good match, plus he might supply some thunder when Rolen is out. Same for Gomes in LF. Only going to need a warm body at 1B along as Votto isn’t hurt.
Votto protection
Nothing more.
If this Votto thing goes badly, it’s gonna be Alonso at 1b

I heard they hit a snag
When the Marlins stipulated that any deal had to include Adam Rosales, then they found out Walt dealt him last year.
