8 Nights of Brendanukkah: Yeah, I didn't have much prepared today. I love old-timey comics as much as I love old-timey baseball players. And this cover reminds me of the time Danny Ray Herrera made his major league debut against the soon to be World Champion Phillies. He struck out Ryan Howard and Pat Burrell with the bases loaded. Except that Herrera and Howard are both lefties. Bizarro!

Well, I have to post my favorite xkcd
I have this one posted in my office. It just cracks me up. None of my employees laughed at this when they saw it. Neither did my boss. My wife doesn’t think it’s funny. Neither do my kids. Obviously, I am surrounded by people with no sense of humor.

I gave it a rec
because I have this OCD thing where if something has 2 recs, it must be greened.

It seems I've missed a lot in the past 4 seasons.
I just couldn’t get into there only being half a justice league. And Cloe was better looking girl on the show as far as I recall.

No surprise there.

I went over to South Side Sox to see their reaction to the Dunn signing.
Man, I think I discovered how new people on RR must feel: like 200 out of the 500 comments in the thread seemed to be inside jokes. Both bewildering and amusing.

SSS is 50x worse than RR
the AJ Pierzynski resigning (which should make for a pretty good debate) garnered a total of about 8 words of actual opinion on the signing, and 400 posts about God knows what. And the two or so who did venture an opinion were pretty much immediately shot down.
Cardinals just signed Berkman...
What the hell?

good
now i have a reason to despise his entire petty existence.

They're spooging themselves over this at VEWLB
I don’t see it. Berkman just doesn’t worry me anymore. I know his track record against the Reds, but I just feel that he can be pitched to now, and anywhere you put him on the field, he’s a huge defensive liability.
I guess he makes for a good LH bat off the bench, and I wouldn't mind him playing LF for us in a platoon with Gomes...
But 8 million for a bench/platoon guy? Seriously, where are you gonna play him? Maybe they move Holliday to RF and play him in left, but that gives you one of the worst outfields in baseball…
"People don't kill people. Burning oreo packages kill people."
especially if they dump Rasmus
they’re kinda stuck with Jay, Holliday, Berkman in the OF. I dunno, is So Taguchi still around?

we could send them Bloomquist for Wainwright

somebody will have to play center right field.

Yeah, Berkman isn't scary anymore
his defense is probably almost Gomes-esque in LF, and his bat is probably only a little better. But they’re paying $8 million for that, not $1.8…
At least it’ll keep Jon Jay off the field I guess. I despise that guy.
i think Berkman is waaaaay better than Gomes
im not sure if he’s 4x better, but he’s averaged a wOBA north of .390 for the last 10 years, aside from this past season. it’s totally possible that he fell off the cliff last year, but to say he is only a bit better than Gomes is ri-damn-diculous.

yeah, Berkman's a great hitter
and is historically a good outfielder (he even played some CF). But that was just history

I'd call Berkman a +20 hitter
-10 fielder in LF. That would make him about 2 WAR. He hasn’t played OF since 2004, and he wasn’t that good at it even back then. Both of those numbers are better than I would expect for Gomes, though I expect Gomes to hit a little better than he did in 2010. Maybe +8 or 10.
If Berkman reverts to a +40 hitter again, then yeah, he’s seriously better than Gomes. but he’s going to make up very little ground to Gomes on defense, and I’m not sure if you’re aware of how he’s hit lefties in the past 3 years, but it’s been a scary decline. He is borderline platoon territory on that, much like Gomes vs. righties. It’ll eat his value unless they pinch hit for him.
This makes Gomes a must start against the Cards
His weak pop-ups will wreak HAVOC on that OF.
Berkman, the Fat Elvis of MLB
that should make some interesting plays in LF….
