Rhodes to sign with the Rangers

The deal is for one year with a vesting option for 2012, and the contract will be finalized once Rhodes passes a physical. Should we go after another left handed reliever? or should we use the money to trade for Upton... I know what I would do

looks like we got some more money to play with. Really hope it doesn’t go to Pods. I wonder if he would’ve accepted arb. I bet he would have. But it sure would’ve been nice to get 2 picks for him.

You can't really play that game, though.

I doubt the Rangers, or anyone else, would’ve offered him nearly as much money if it would’ve cost a draft pick. If they’d have offered him arb he would’ve ended up on the Reds one way or the other. Not that that would’ve been bad, but we were never getting compensation for him.

Not to mention, Willis might get a look there too if he doesn’t make the rotation.

He’s gotta be like 8th on the SP depth chart. He hasn’t had a BB/9 under 6 since his Marlins years. I like the signing as a virtual no risk/potential (however small) high reward deal, but if D-Train is starting games for us this year, we’re in trouble. Unless he magically has figured something out

his problem is he still needs to work on pitch economy and going deeper into games, he ain’t going to learn that in the MLB bullpen.

It's not, and honestly I'd be fine if that's the way they decide to use him

I just don’t think there’s any wrong way for the Reds to use him at this point. No matter what, he’ll be contributing where he’s needed and it’s still very likely he’ll end up a starter in the long run. I just don’t understand the “if he pitches in the bullpen in 2011, he’s a sunk cost” argument. If the rotation is solid without him there, what’s the harm in having the best damn reliever in baseball to call on?

by BK on Dec 24, 2010 12:02 PM EST up reply actions

it takes away from him developing his secondary stuff and learning how to be a starter

I’m with you on it not being the end all of his chances to be a starter, but its also time he could use to develop his third and fourth pitches in game situations, that and learning to conserve his FB and get deep into games. If they want to call him up half way through the season and stick him in the pen, I’m fine with that, but I want him starting at least some next year.

by pack_fan on Dec 24, 2010 12:45 PM EST up reply actions

ya but the other side

is that he could be up in the pen, winning games for the big team, and not for Louisville. And suggesting that he won’t develop 3rd and 4th pitches is kinda ignorant. There’s winter ball and a whole lot of spring training. These guys are training and working year round, they aren’t only pitching during the regular season. There is plenty of time to work on that stuff.

If the Reds need him in the pen, I say stick him in there for another year. If the Reds go through spring training, and feel that maybe some of their young starters are shaky, then ya, save him for a starter spot. But man, they really need to be thinking about winning games from April to October—the division is going to be a lot tougher next year. St Louis owned the Reds head to head last year, there’s no guarantee they will stumble on Chicago and Houston next year. And it’s looking like the Brewers will be competitive as well. Almost certainly will require more than 87 wins to finish first in the division in 2011.

by cokane on Dec 25, 2010 2:02 AM EST up reply actions

supposedly he's already developed the pitches

I just mean using them in-game. perhaps i’m overrating the importance of that, but I still like the idea of him getting mentally used to useing them to certain hitters, certain counts, certain situations or whatever.

I’m also worried about him building his innings, if we place him in the pen this year, I’m worried he’ll need extra years to prepare to start, and up his injury risk because he’ll be pressured to extend himself as a starter. again, I might be overrating that aspect as well.

as for competeing in the division next season, I’m all for that, but I see our one glaring weakness compared to those teams – the lack of an ace starter. If we need to sacrifice a few wins in April may and june next year (also tough to say how valuable an extra reliever is then anyway) I’m all for it if the gains the next few years down the line when/if we get that elusive piece this team needs.

by pack_fan on Dec 25, 2010 12:57 PM EST up reply actions

well, it seems almost certain

they would start ST giving Chapman a chance to compete with all the others for a rotation spot. The only locks on the rotation would be Arroyo and Cueto. All the others competing for the last 3 spots. Obviously if Chapman is blowing away Volquez and the other guys, then they will almost surely start him.

Though Chapman has awesome velocity and movement, I don’t think he’s going to be an ace for us just yet. If anything, his competitors such as Volquez or Wood may be closer to being able to reach that mark.

You make some excellent points in your post, but perhaps underrate the difficult situation our bullpen may be in. Cordero could bounce back in a contract year, but he could also get worse. Beyond Cordero there really aren’t any proven guys in the bullpen. So, just saying, I hope there isn’t too much griping that Dusty/Jocketty are morons if Chapman ends up in the ’pen for 2010.

by cokane on Dec 27, 2010 2:18 AM EST up reply actions

I wonder

I think it’s pretty rare for a player to really win a spot in spring training, and when it happens, it’s usually a bench player – 25th guy on the roster. Spring training is too small a sample size and too strange a situation – pitchers “working on stuff,” hitters fooling around, managers giving everyone a shot rather than having players play complete games, etc. I would guess teams already know what they’re going to do with players like Chapman going into spring training.

The Fay

says the Reds have more cash to spend now that Rhodes is gone.

But not signing Rhodes means the Reds have some money to spend elsewhere. I figure they had about $4 million budgeted for Rhodes. Rhodes’ deal is for one year but it could be worth up to $8 million if vesting options for a second year is met. I think the second year was the deal breaker for the Reds.

Now, the money could be used to sign a left-handed hitting outfielder (Scott Podsednik) or a backup shortstop (Edgar Renteria) or rehabbing starting pitcher (Brandon Webb).

He also says it’s slow going on the Votto front. I think he really wants to go to arb.
