Walt Jockety sucks at his job
I just realized something, and it really pains me to say this: Walt Jockety has made a terrible, terrible mistake. After an initial hesitancy I've come to warm up to Walt as a GM; he's made a number of moves that have come out of nowhere, and more often than not they've worked wonderfully. It's rare that he's completely dropped the ball, in my estimation.
Unfortunately, I think I've discovered just such an occurance. Just moments ago, I was perusing MLBTradeRumors and came across this little blurb. Read that first note again: Austin Kearns is available, which I had forgotten.
To me, Kearns would be a clear upgrade over Gomes, for no more money (probably less). He doesn't have quite the power that Gomes does, but his .353 OBP makes up for it. In addition, he has a solid defesive reputation while Gomes....doesn't.
I know his career hasn't gone the way we once hoped it would; I also realize he's somewhat fragile. But honestly, can you point at someone else who'd clearly improve the team for under $2M/yr?

According to the article
The Dbacks chose Nady over Kearns, so I don’t think it’s that he’s “flying under the radar” in general.
He’s a better player (and a year younger) than Nady, so maybe (1) he isn’t healthy, or (2) he’s asking for money than I’m guessing.

Really?
Since the beginning of the ’07 season, Kearns has averaged .8 WAR/yr; Gomes has been below replacement level. Fangraphs shows a bigger difference – 1.3 WAR/yr for Kearns since ’07, just 0.5 WAR total for Gomes since then.
I’d argue 1 win/yr is more than a “marginal” upgrade, unless Kearns wants $6M/yr.

Has turned the Reds completely around. We got Rolen, Chapman, Volquez, Rhodes and alot of prospects have been able to grow because of him like Votto, Bruce, Heisey, Stubbs, Wood, Bailey, Leake. And the best thing he ever did was get rid of mr. strikeout and worst defensive player ever Encarnacion, Rosales (just not a major leaguer), David Weathers and worst hitting catcher Larue. The man is a flat genius and i agree with everything he does. Only questionable thing i have seen was he signed Mike Lincoln to a 2 year contract off the streets. He was only worth maybe one if that.

well...looks like you have a point, there.
"College actually kind of beat that out of me, making me more, well, of an asshole."
Depends on how they measure a chance
if it’s only measured by a ball that the fielder (Gomes) may have any slight chance of getting to, then of course LF had a lot fewer.
i've wondered that as well
I have zero idea how they measure defensive chances
by Highlifeman21 on Dec 20, 2010 8:45 PM EST up reply actions
I'm not sure how many TC Edmonds had in CIN alone
however, it does seem that CF had twice the TC of LF, and RF had 45% (I think I did the math correctly, but who knows these days….) more TC than LF.
or, if you wanna look at it another way, LF had 49% of the TC of CF, and 69% of the TC of RF overall….
sure, select end points all you want, but it does seem pretty significant to note that LFs just don’t see that many total chances….

by Highlifeman21 on Dec 21, 2010 5:37 PM EST up reply actions
There's something wrong with your math here
We’re both looking at Total Chances. I don’t know if it’s because you’re looking at just the Reds and I’m looking at the entire NL, but I showed below that LFs are at least within 13% of RF in TC. How much less than 13% depends on how much you want to account for the difference in range between the average LF and RF. There’s just no way that LF has 69% of the TC of RF.
Also, the TC for CF in the NL last year was 6,711. LF was at 71% of that. I don’t know how you’re getting 49%. The true difference between opportunities for LF and CF is probably much less given that CFs will call off LFs for balls in between them.
so
Gomes really sucks?
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

Seconded. Seems bizarre.
If it was just a small difference, I’d attribute it to range, but it’s a lot.
"People don't kill people. Burning oreo packages kill people."
spread it out
over 3-4 years, see if there are trends.
It may be the type of hitter who hits to left, doesn’t hit fly balls, but a TC is a TC, right, just fielding it?
It probably has to do with Janish somehow.
Maybe the difference for the Reds is BHOTF (balls hit over the fence) to left. Is that enough to matter?
The man is a flat genius and i agree with everything he does. -- some troll describing Sir Walter Jocketty
Total "chances" in the NL
This is simply putouts + assists + errors, so it doesn’t account for range: LF: 4,744; RF: 5,452. That’s a 13% difference. I expect RFs to get to more balls but it’s probably a little less than that 13%. My WAG is 5% less opportunities in LF.
There was nearly an identical number of PAs as a LHB (4,343) and RHB (4,318), so I’m not sure if batter-handedness matters.
batting technique would matter
There is major emphasis toward hitting the ball to right field, even in the air with a man on 2nd base. A lot of hitters are pretty good at it and it would not take over … say … one a game or even 2 or 3 a week to mount a major difference.
The man is a flat genius and i agree with everything he does. -- some troll describing Sir Walter Jocketty
I can see your typical scrappy RHB trying to go the other way with slightly more frequency
Whether it makes a dent in total batted ball numbers (especially line drives and fly balls) I’m not sure. Wish I knew of a way to get that kind of info, but my tool belt is lacking.
It might not matter on fly balls
but the ball being put into play would simply not be going to left field. Anywhere else isn’t being measured. So TC by the second baseman is a TC not being handled by anybody else. Almost nobody tries to go to left field to advance a runner. A sac fly would be the only way.
AHAHAHAHAHAHA CHICKS SUCK DUDES RULE. -- Andromache
Also surprising
I was always under the assumption that there were more RHB than LHB.
"He’s like if Ron Gant and Eric Davis had a white baby." -- GlennBraggsSwingAndMissBrokenBat on Drew Stubbs
Also of note: Total Chances does not equal "times the ball is touched by the LF."
If your LF is a statue with a weak arm, he might get fewer chances than a good outfielder, but might be touching the ball just as often…perhaps to the team’s detriment when his lack of range and weak-ass arm allow a single to be stretched into a double.
Also, errors count toward total chances.

I actually laughed out loud. You’re right, he DID get Volquez – at the cost of reigning MVP OFer Josh Hamilton. And bunch of prospects Jocketty had nothing to do with acquiring HAVE been successful – probably because of him, you are right.
Jonny Gomes sure is better than Adam Dunn. Except that every GM in MLB disagrees. Rolen has been good, but we’ll see about the extension. David Weathers, not worth discussing. People hated EE, almost impossible to discuss rationally (much like Dunn). Arroyo extension, again we will see.
T-Virus wasn’t a mistake? Rosales wouldn’t look terrible as Rolen/Janish insurance this year, but he HAD to give him away to make up for the mistake that was T-Virus. The entire Balentien acquisition and situation at this point looks like a mistake. Orca maybe not a mistake, but not a success. Injured Jim Edmonds for Dickerson = success?

I think that Kearns is a marginal upgrade over Gomes,
and is not worth the PR and clubhouse turmoil that would be caused by stitting Gomes in favor of Kearns. If Walt could trade Gomes to clear salary and then sign Kearns, I might be on board. But Kearns is pretty fragile.

The Astros
outbid the Yankees for Bill Hall.
The Yankees are now hoping to get Keppinger from the Astros, since they’ll need to free up a roster spot for Hall.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Jeff keppinger would be an excellent pickup for the Yankees
that way, Yankee fans can still delude themselves about Derek Jeter being a passable defensive SS. They’ll compare him to Kepp, and come to the conclusion that Jeter is still great.
he's the 21st century Scott Brosius!

Willingham to Athletics
for Corey Brown AAA OF and Henry Rodriquez flamethrower wild reliever. Reds equivalent maybe Maloney and Dorn. Good trade for the A’s- would have been a nice pickup for the Reds.
Willingham is still recovering from the left knee surgery that ended his 2010 season
That said, he shoulkd be ready for spring and absolutely rakes. Willingham got on base at a .389 clip in his 114 games with the Nationals last season. He would have certainly been an upgrade in LF. This seems like a real missed opportunity. His career OBP against righties is .827…and that’s his weak side.
There is some domino news (from Rotowire.com):
While we can see the virtues of adding Willingham, the A’s have a really crowded outfield. Right now the three projected starters are Willingham, Coco Crisp and David DeJesus. However, the team also still has Ryan Sweeney, Conor Jackson and Chris Carter to try to fit in as well. Hideki Matsui has the DH spot locked up, and Daric Barton has first base. Look for the A’s to make another deal before the start of the season.
Are any of their extra outfielders worth a look?

Hell, let's get the little kid with the halo
Am I the only person who is willing to give Dave Sappelt a chance to steal this job?

I'm sure we'd all love to see him play his way into the starting lineup for 2010.

Is this a gamble?
I mean, we saw half the male population of the U.S. trying out for that job a year ago, and it ended up going generally to Gomes.
About 56 percent of the planet thought that was a bad idea but the club disagreed.
So giving Sappelt a chance to win the job … does he win it from Gomes or does the other half of the male population of the U.S. get another chance?

Any of
Mesoraco

Maloney
Leake
Francisco

I'd keep Hamilton, Mesoraco, and Leake if possible, in that order

Hamilton is somewhat intriguing.
Francisco is not,

Can we really call either of them GREAT prospects?
Honest question. Isn’t Grandal still somewhat of an unknown, and Meso’s had exactly one great season?
Don’t get me wrong, I hope they both turn out and we sell one off to the highest bidder.

that strong on Hamilton?
I mean, he’s a legit prospect, but I’m not sure there’s anyone below AA I wouldn’t trade for Greinke

But Daryl Thompson was the real key to the deal
don’t you remember? There’s still time for him to turn out better than Bill Bray. And as long as he never even makes it to MLB, he’ll be better than Gary Majewski.
I remember him
saw him make his debut @ The House That Jeter Ruined
he forgot to cover 1B what seemed to be a couple times that day, and faced that Yankee ace Dan Niese

don't think so
He played in the AFL this year, and the Reds added him to the roster to protect him from the Rule 5 draft (after DFAing him previously). That suggests they think he’s ready to contribute now.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
I just remember not hearing from him for awhile
if he makes the MLB roster, it’ll be in the pen, as we have much more capable options for the rotation
by Highlifeman21 on Dec 30, 2010 4:26 PM EST up reply actions
He has good stuff
he should be in the ‘pen regardless of the rotation options, because his arm can’t stand up to 200 innigns a year.
Last year he made 12 AA starts, and only threw 51 innings. He was even effective, but just couldn’t go deep into games.

Yeah, yeah
but my whole premise was meant to be sarcastic. Some people thought Thompson would be the one to make this deal look palatable when it was said and done. 5 years later and we are hoping he can contribute as a reliever…
I’m not holding my breath, though it’d be nice if he put in a solid season or something.
I was there too
thanks for calling me.
