•Were it not for his salary, the Reds might be a more serious suitor for Zack Greinke. However, a rival executive says Cincinnati is "tapped out," payroll-wise.
This sort of stuff makes me sad and want to agree with Paul Daugherty.

Please be a smokescreen, please be a smokescreen...
We're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad. Otherwise, you wouldn't have come.
Greinke, at $13.5M, is completely out of the question
But here’s what I can tell you with some certainty:
If the Reds give $16M to Cueto, Volquez, Votto, Bray and Burton, they’ll have about $4M bucks. If the settlements go their way, maybe $5M. Ironically, that’s enough to add Justin Upton next season.

Hmmm
I didn’t have a problem with extending Arroyo… but when that stops us from getting someone like Grienke…

I think the ask in prospects may be stopping them as much as, or more than, the money
With Lee signed, Greinke could be the only “ace” available, potentially until 2012 – or at least until the trade deadline this year. He’s going to command the farm and there are teams more desperate for pitching who are also willing to pay his full salary. I think it was probably a non-starter even before Arroyo’s option was picked up.

also, without the extension, Arroyo would have been owed twice as much next season
