Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Will Never Top Michael Jordan

"I cannot get rid of the hurt from losing, but after the last out of every loss, I must accept that there will be a tomorrow. In fact, it's more than there'll be a tomorrow, it's that I want there to be a tomorrow. That's the big difference, I want tomorrow to come."

Some other great Sparky quotes

“I can’t believe they pay us to play baseball – something we did for free as kids.”

“I don’t want to embarrass any other catcher by comparing him to Johnny Bench.”

“If a team is in a positive frame of mind, it will have a good attitude. If it has a good attitude, it will make a commitment to playing the game right. If it plays the game right, it will win—unless, of course, it doesn’t have enough talent to win, and no manager can make goose-liver pate out of goose feathers, so why worry?”

“If I ever find a pitcher who has heat, a good curve, and a slider, I might seriously consider marrying him, or at least proposing.”

“I only had a high school education and believe me, I had to cheat to get that.”

“I’ve changed my mind about it (DH) – instead of being bad, it stinks.”

“Me carrying a briefcase is like a hotdog wearing earrings.”

“Players have two things to do. Play and keep their mouths shut.”

“The players make the manager, it’s never the other way.”

“You give us the pitching some of these clubs have and no one could touch us, but God has a way of not arranging that, because it’s not as much fun.”

Miss him already. What a great guy.

That third quote is incredibly wise and endearing

I had seen all of these except that one, and I think it might be my favorite.

Goose liver-pate out of goose feathers……just brilliant.

This is very sad news

Sad for baseball, loosing someone who obviously loved the game and loved teaching it.

Sad for the Reds, who lost their greatest manager.

Sad for me; I was just 7 years old when the Reds hired him. I grew up with the BRM, and despite his quote above, he seemed every bit as important to their success as any of the players.

by sidnancy on Nov 4, 2010 3:07 PM EDT reply actions

Part of what made him great

was his ability to deflect praise to his players and make them feel like their success was all because they did it. And it paid off, as Rose said something like, “We would have done anything for that man.”

I remember when the Reds fired him.

Everyone thought the press conference was to announce the Reds had signed free agent Von Joshua. When it came down that Sparky was fired, I almost stopped being a Reds fan.

When I first started paying attention to baseball, I knew that the Tigers had a manager named Sparky Anderson

That seemed like the greatest thing in the world to 9 year old me. Then I learned later that he had managed the Reds, and not just any Reds, but the Machine. That’s when he became a legend in my eyes, but it also made the Big Red Machine seem even greater because it was that man that led them.

My grandfather had tons of BRM stuff throughout his house but this was the photo

he held most dear to any in his collection. He got both Sparky and Bench to sign it and it hung in his television room prominently above the TV. It’s honestly one of my oldest baseball-related memories. For sentimental value it’s one of my favorite pictures ever.

Now, my two favorite of Sparky, though, are these. I think they embody the two sides of the man the best:

Yeah, but in that pic he most certianly isn't 155-pounds.

I think that’s why it’s surprising to see his height at 6-2. The guy was such a rail when he played.

I admit, I didn't know until recently who Sparky Anderson was

I was born a few years after the Big Red Machine days, and growing up in Iowa we didn’t pay much attention to the Reds.

I’ve been reading up a lot on Reds history over the last few years though, and he seemed a truly special man. Some of the quotes Slyde was tweeting today were some of the greatest baseball quotes I’ve ever seen.

My father had a stroke when he was in his early 40s, and now 10 years later he’s showing some early signs of dementia. I’m getting a taste of what that’s like, and I feel nothing but the utmost compassion for Sparky and his family and what they must have been going through these last few years. I wish them peace in their loss.

Finally, if you will permit me, I'd like to make a comment which in my mind, is indicative, perhaps, of the greater significance of football and sports emphasis in general in this country, and that is, I thank God I was warring on the gridirons of the Midwest and not on the battlefields of Europe. "The Machine" by Joe Posnanski is a great look at Sparky

And my grandmother has dementia. She hasn’t known who I am for several years. It’s not fun for anybody, and I hope for the best for your dad.

Yeah, my grandfather was probably the smartest and wittiest person I've ever known.

To see him as he was near the end after knowing how sharp he was my whole life was crushing. It really set in after I had picked him up from the nursing home for what ended up being his final family gathering last Tgiving and him not recognizing me nor any of my relatives, let alone what holiday it even was.

It was a sad way to go out for a proud and incredibly successful man.

Calmer than you are.

My father slips in and out

It’s kinda sad because, when he’s with it, he’s aware of the fact that most of the time, he’s not.
I’m a Reds fan because he was a Reds fan.
When his mother died, he said something that I think is fitting here: Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.

When you come to the fork in the road, take it.

Sparky

The singular reason I’ll never bother writing a series that efforts to rank the field managers from the Reds’ history. There would be absolutely no suspense or debate on #1.

by riverfront76 on Nov 4, 2010 8:31 PM EDT reply actions

I remember

that I had a great uncle that lived next to my grandparents that had Sparky’s home phone number, and often, after a loss he called Sparky and put his 2 cents in. This was usually in an inebriated state and was funnier than hell.

Maybe ole uncle Shorty was the brains behind the Big Red Machine instead of Sparky. the world will never know.

I was just thinking

That maybe Sparky had extra incentive to win at home, so that crazy sumbitch from WV wouldn’t have to call him and line him out.

Interesting

Sparky retired from managing when he was 61 years old. Guess how old Dusty is.

Sparky was also managing at an age when a lot of guys are still playing.

His tenure is probably one of the weirdest in all of baseball. I love what Lee May called him his first season … as Sparky’s leading them to the WS.

My two memories of Sparky

1. Got to shake his hand as a little kid when he was signing his book “The Main Spark” at Readmore Books in Middletown. Just remembered he seem like a nice old man (when he wasn’t THAT old). I still have two autographed copies of that book.

2. One of the more sad days of my young baseball nerd life came a few years later. I was around 12 or 13 I think. My dad lived in Florida, and he arranged for me to fly down there on a Friday night and then go to the Tigers clubhouse in Lakeland and meet Sparky. I was sooo excited by the trip. Then of course there’s mechanical problems with the plane…the last one out for the evening, so I got bumped to the next morning, which meant not getting to Florida in time to meet Sparky. I was so upset.

Anyway I have heard and read countless Sparky stories……not ashamed to say I shed a tear after hearing of his passing.

Reading these comments is great

Sparky was managing when I became a RED fan. Yeah, it was the machine that got me hooked, and Bench was my favorite. My mom liked Pete Rose. I didn’t realize how cool it was to have a mom who was a baseball fan until I became an adult. I think I’ll tell her that next time I see her. Probably not because of Sparkys passing as much as the effect of staying here for longer than 5 minutes and reading everything.

Got a group of great fans here

        RIP Sparky, loved you too.
