RR Election thread
Tonight's a big night in the US, with the balance of power possibly swinging one way or the other. What are your thoughts on the results, and the general direction of US politics in general?
I ask all of you to respect the RR guidelines, as stated below:
Joining Red Reporter
Community Guidelines:
There are three rules on this site:
1. Be respectful to others. Name-calling will not be tolerated.
2. Avoid the non-baseball related hot button topics as much as possible.
3. Everything else in moderation.
When posting at this blog, please follow this one simple rule: Before hitting "post" to post your remarks, ask yourself: "Would I be embarrassed to say this in front of strangers who were physically present in the room with me and could respond to my face?" If the answer is "yes," then don’t post. RR encourages and welcomes all opinions, no matter how strong; however, personal attacks and other uncivilized forms of expression are not welcome. Thanks for understanding.
Seriously though, the last part is REALLY important. There are a lot of well educated and clever people here. There are also a lot of people here who tend to talk down to people who disagree with them. Be respectful and actually discuss what impact tonight's elections might have on ALL our lives. The reason most of us come here is the variety of topics on which we can have a civil discussion, and that's important. Make me proud, Red Reporter.

OH HAI
The fact that Rand Paul won Kentucky astounds me. Discuss.

I'm definitely in the minority of most people I know, but I only hate this like 95%.
He’s ultimately no worse than Jim Bunning. And, if he gets to be more like his father, then that will make things better. I’ll still disagree with him, but…what I’m trying to say here is “Not Jim Bunning.”

this is not true
the eastern part of the state has historically voted democratic. they depend on government aid programs that democrats support so they have tended to vote democrat. in fact the 2 most important politicians from eastern ky in the last few years (Paul Patton & Greg Stumbo) are both big time democrats.
I’m really disappointed with just the general tone and nature of the political commercials this year.

I agree here
I meant to comment on your fb post but never got around to it. It was well said. I’m tired of political ads being of the “DID YOU KNOW MY OPPONENT LET A RAPIST MURDERER CHILD MOLESTER WALK FREE WHILE GIVING HIM YOUR JOBS AND A FREE GOVERNMENT HANDOUT WHILE REWARDING YOUR EMPLOYER FOR FIRING YOU?” tone. How about telling me what you plan to do to fix shit? The problem is, most voting Americans don’t want to fix shit.
"just a couple of weeks ago a first year student in my program told me i was charming and charismatic, it was a guy, but the point still stands.: -- justin007000
More than that, explaining how to fix shit requires two things:
1) Intelligence and understanding of the nuances inherent in all problems facing a nation of 300+ million
2) More than 30 seconds.
Most political candidates have neither.

As crummy as negative ads are
I really think they’re valid in the case of Carl Paladino. The man is unbalanced.
Yeah, he is a little scary.
And given how….um….“not strong” Cuomo is, I think there were a lot of Republicans really pissed that he got the nomination. A real candidate might’ve had a shot of beating Cuomo.

Despite the obvious troll-baiting here, I'll bite
In my experience, people typically choose to teach because of a combination of 2 factors: They love the subject and they enjoy working with and being around young people.
If teachers are unbalanced in either direction they typically aren’t very good teachers. We’ve all had teachers that are super enthusiastic but don’t know what they are talking about, and others who are clearly brilliant but don’t know or care how to express that knowledge.
And the whole “those who can’t, teach” is such a ridiculous argument, because (even if it has some truth in some case) teaching requires a whole set of talents and qualities that most other professions, like, say, banking, don’t need.

And I’d also wager a lot of money that if they really are making that much, it’s because they almost have a PhD (or they do actually have one) and they’ve been teaching for 25 years.
Also, they probably do a ton of after school clubs/sports that pay them extra but they also work extra for.

what i am saying is
i think it is very difficult to judge teachers, different districts and different levels of classes will effect students results.
The best teacher in the world can struggle to produce “acceptable” results with one class, and a very mediocre teacher would do well with another.
I don’t think the current testing is a very good measure, and i think it forces teachers to teach to a test, which is less than optimal.

We're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad. Otherwise, you wouldn't have come.

The converse of the whole “Every American expects to be rich” thing is that it means that poor people are convinced its their fault they’re poor. I think that’s pretty fucking sad.

Sweden's population according to its 2009 census is
9,354,462.
The city you live in as of July 2009 has 8,391,881 citizens.
Please, for the last time America: quit trying to compare this country to small European nations. Our size, scope and infrastructure dwarfs everything and anything anything Europe has with the exception of Russia and we all know how communist/socialistic ideas worked there.
Sweden is not rampant socialism. Sweden is a small place. Socialism works in small places. It’s a horrific, terrible, piece of dog shit any where with a population worth a damn and especially in a country as expansive and diversified the US.

i dont know what the hell you are talking about
“the politics of aristocracy”? when modern capitalism was born out of the Industrial Revolution, it so marginalized and alienated the working class that the bourgeois were forced to capitulate. it caused numerous revolutions, which were more or less put down. though the revolutions largely failed in the short term, the ramifications were astronomical.
by Charlie Scrabbles on Nov 3, 2010 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions
Charlie, in England during that time
only an aristocrat could run for public office. You could become an aristocrat two ways — gain money (doubtful) or serve England with distinction (best chance). And those who controlled the government controlled the money and thus the working laws.
Ideal capitalism is opened to ALL peoples. Not those of a certain caste. That’s why capitalism is doing poorly in places like India where ones social level can prevent someone from starting a business.
What was happening in England, while capitalistic, wasn’t Capitalism. You’re right, modern capitalism was born out of the industrial revolution because finally someone — of un-aristocratic blood — could open his own fucking shop.
That’s all I’m trying to say. I agree with you on everything else.

That is, to survive, both have moved toward the center. Capitalist economies have had to adopt socialist elements, and socialist economies have had to adopt capitalist elements.

Homer: "Well, it's not quite a mop, not quite a puppet, but man... (laughs, then pauses) So, to answer you question, I don't know."
well sorta
i’ve been to Cuba (bet nobody at RR knew that), and I’ve been to China.
China is much more capitlistic than Cuba, or Cuba has a much more controlled economy than China.
Cuba allows very few private small businesses, and the regulations are so harsh, they fail. Most of the private businesses in Cuba are geared towards the tourism industry, and they are run by foreign companies, their are a number of Dutch and Spanish run hotels in Havana. All of the workers salary is taken away in taxes, except for their $15 and rations card, so there is no money for anything beyond the necessities of life. Most people who have cars are higher up in society.
Where as in China, people who live in the cities actually get to keep their income, their pay is based on their job, and they have extra money to spend on things. There are giant shopping malls in urban centers. That doesn’t happen in Cuba.

i get the sense that individualism isnt such a big deal in Western Europe, at least not as much as it is here. ive noticed a more defined sense of community among them. not saying they got it “right”, but trying to counter your first thought there.
whether or not they did or not, we certainly didnt. and that’s the important thing im trying to say.
by Charlie Scrabbles on Nov 2, 2010 9:23 PM EDT up reply actions
That's true to an extent.
But I lived in London for two years and saw their election cycle.
They all vote for whom they think will make their life the easiest. The difference (IMHO) is that things are set up in many of those countries to be more equitable, regardless of current opinion. No one argues about health care in the UK. Everyone has it, and has for years.
Also, it’s easier for things to appear more unified in countries that are much smaller and more homogenous than us. Imagine if the country was only TN, KY, WV, VA, NC, and SC. And another country was VT, NH, RI, MA, NY, and MA. I’m sure people could look at those countries and hold them up as a model for people supporting the common good with their politics. That’s easier to do when almost everyone agrees.

FWIW, it's the same thing with education
Finland kicks everyone’s ass in education and test scores. Well, it’s much easier to do that when everyone looks the same, speaks the same language, and has the same general outlook on life.
Not so easy in the US.

The underlying theory of democracy is that each person votes in their best interest and at the end of the day the majority’s interests are represented.

I actually like the electoral college
It works as a level to magnify the power of the individual voter, and protects us from the tyranny of the majority (and the internecine strife that results from it).

no, it isn't
A mathematician named Alan Natapoff has mathematical proof that the electoral college is better than the raw vote.
He even uses a baseball analogy to explain why.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
professor at MIT
Definitely a nerd.
However, he’s an influential nerd. He testified before Congress the last time they were thinking about getting rid of the electoral college, arguing in favor of keeping it.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
dunno if it's all his fault
But the 2000 election didn’t change his mind. He thinks the guy getting fewer votes winning an election occasionally is a small price to pay for the stability the electoral college gives us.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
it works to magnify the power of the voter in small states
it weakens the power of the voter in large states.
"It is a damn poor mind indeed which can't think of at least two ways to spell any word."
-President Andrew Jackson
sort of
He argues that the point isn’t to give each voter equal power. In a dictatorship, every voter has the same power: zero. Clearly, that’s not desirable.
Rather, you want to increase each voter’s individual power. Which means maximizing the chance that they can swing an election. That is, that they can be Bill Mazeroski, winning the series with one swing, even though the other team might have scored more runs over the series.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
i find the sports analogy to be less than satisfying
he doesn’t really explain why government officials should be treated like sports teams in the regards of groupings. Really when you consider the games vs run differential argument, it really is a matter of entertainment. There is much less drama in a game, if the outcome of that single game isn’t as important as the run differential for the entire season. It is a pretty weak comparison.
James Madison, chief architect of our nation’s electoral college, wanted to protect each citizen against the most insidious tyranny that arises in democracies: the massed power of fellow citizens banded together in a dominant bloc. As Madison explained in The Federalist Papers (Number X), "a well-constructed Union" must, above all else, "break and control the violence of faction," especially "the superior force of an . . . overbearing majority." In any democracy, a majority’s power threatens minorities. It threatens their rights, their property, and sometimes their lives.
This argument plays fast and lose with colonial history.
It was equally desirable, that the immediate election should be made by men most capable of analyzing the qualities adapted to the station, and acting under circumstances favorable to deliberation, and to a judicious combination of all the reasons and inducements which were proper to govern their choice. A small number of persons, selected by their fellow-citizens from the general mass, will be most likely to possess the information and discernment requisite to such complicated investigations. It was also peculiarly desirable to afford as little opportunity as possible to tumult and disorder. This evil was not least to be dreaded in the election of a magistrate, who was to have so important an agency in the administration of the government as the President of the United States. But the precautions which have been so happily concerted in the system under consideration, promise an effectual security against this mischief.
-Hamilton
It was created to distant the electorate from the power of voting for the President, which is why there it takes 50%+1 of the electoral college to be elected President. The Founders didn’t really anticipate the strong two party system that we feel today, and felt that most Presidential elections would fail to produce a candidate who would receive the required number of votes, so the burden of choosing the President would fall on the House.
This argument fails to persuade me:
A well-designed electoral system might include obstacles to thwart an overbearing majority. But direct, national voting has none. Under raw voting, a candidate has every incentive to woo only the largest bloc— say, Serbs in Yugoslavia. If a Serb party wins national power, minorities have no prospect of throwing them out; 49 percent will never beat 51 percent. Knowing this, the majority can do as it pleases (lacking other effective checks and balances). But in a districted election, no one becomes president without winning a large number of districts, or "states"-say, two of the following three: Serbia, Bosnia, and Croatia. Candidates thus have an incentive to campaign for non-Serb votes in at least some of those states and to tone down extreme positions-in short, to make elections less risky events for the losers. The result, as George Wallace used to say, may often be a race without "a dime’s worth of difference" between two main candidates, which he viewed as a weakness but others view as a strength of our system.
If the majority was that overbearing, chances are, as he said before, the majority would be distributed well enough to provide a simple win for the their candidate with the electoral college. I feel that even without an electoral college, pols will still pander to minorities, because having strong support from a group that makes up 30% of the population is very helpful towards receiving the most votes. McCain received more white votes than Obama, yet Obama won because he did well with almost every minority group, and Obama won the popular vote by a large margin.
I also don’t buy that it is better because it means a vote in a small group is more important, because it can sway that small electorate. Even the smallest state in the U.S.‘s population is so large that it won’t be greatly effected by a single individual.

I said the word pubic, but I put a “re” in front of it.
My subject still stands though. Sorry I’m not allowed to put a lame joke with a serious one. But this is a representative democracy, not a pure democracy. Majority rule isn’t the same. If every issue went to a public vote, then voting selfishly would make sense. But since it doesn’t, I believe it is in the best interest of everyone to vote for the representative is best for the community.

right
but even at the state level we are just representative. You said “each person votes in their best interest and at the end of the day the majority’s interests are represented.” I don’t believe that is true. Take an issue like healthcare for 9/11 first responders (only because it is an easy one, but imagine a similar state or local level issue, if you’d like). You put that vote, and only that vote, to the public, and I guarantee it passes easily. However, because of shitty politics from our representative government, it did not pass.
Don’t get bogged down in the specific issue. My point is that who we elect does not represent majority interests because of things like districting, political parties, and simple grudges. I agree that voting selfishly is the intention of a true democracy. I just don’t believe that we have that kind of democracy.

The Republican governor candidate in New York is so strange that a taiwanese news organization made a cartoon about him: http://gothamist.com/2010/10/15/video_paladino_gets_taiwanese_cgi_t.php
I think the guy running as the “Rent is 2 Damn High” candidate is actually less loony than he is!
I was thiiiiiiiis close to voting for him, just for fun.
see what I did there with uzr? it’s like a LOL cats saber-pun combo.--Verka Serduchka
Which one? Paladino or the Rent Is 2 Damn High guy?
I, too, was thiiiiis close to voting for Paladino. Then I realized the state would be in better hands with the 2 Damn High guy than Him. That kind of short circuted my brain, and I voted for Governor Cuomo.
….wait, he’s not governor yet?
McMillan (I think that's the 2 damn high party guy)
I just found him really endearing during the debate and figure Cuomo has it in the bag anyway.
see what I did there with uzr? it’s like a LOL cats saber-pun combo.--Verka Serduchka
not only does cuomo have it in the bag
He made the bag, then made it against the law for anyone else to touch the bag.
That site is a blast. I love Jimmy McMillan, who, BTW ...
is leaving TRI2DH to form his own fucking party. Shit. And. Yes.

Since there’s no way in hell that will happen the Tea Party will be pissed. Progressives will be pissed because Obama will continue to defer to Congressional Republican leadership in hopes that “bipartisanship” can be achieved. Everyone will be pissed because unemployment is going to be just as high or even higher given that the stimulus jobs will be drying up and there’s just not enough money floating around otherwise to provide incentives for hiring.. Since banks are reluctant to re-adjust mortgages foreclosures will be just as big an issue…

I don’t blame either party (or I blame both equally). This mess was 20 years in the making (at least – some say it goes all the way back to Nixon). It may well take 20 years to clean it up. Japan is an example of what happens when a bubble bursts. Twenty years later, and they still haven’t recovered. The bursting of an asset bubble produces a different kind of recession than the usual, and the usual remedies don’t work.

governing is a bitch these days.
My favorite part of the election is Chabot. Thrown out 2 years ago because people were mad as hell and weren’t going to take it anymore, and now he is back because people are still mad as hell and aren’t going to take it anymore.
Well I’m going to have breakfast by the pool.

-President Andrew Jackson
odds on
his being thrown out again in two years?
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
hmm
he barely lost in 2008, and it was the combination of Obama’s coattails and the general anti-Republican mood.
It is hard to tell. The soon to be former Governor Strickland lost his comfortable Congressional seat in the 1994 Republican revolution and took it back in 1996.
I am kind of wondering if these sweeping severely anti-Presidential midterms are going to become the norm.
I know that it is normal to lose seats in the mid-term, but not to the extent of 1994 and 2010. We can’t really judge 2002 because of 9/11.
"It is a damn poor mind indeed which can't think of at least two ways to spell any word."
-President Andrew Jackson
it does seem
Like the electorate is rather schizo these days, swinging wildly from one extreme to another.
2012 might turn out to be a referendum on Obama, in which case the Dems could take a pounding. If so, though, I expect the pendulum will swing the other way when it’s President Palin (or whoever) in the White House.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
although, again looking at history
the Republicans will have to look mature and ready to govern. Clinton won in 1996 (although one could argue Dole was a weak candidate), and some of that had to do with the government shut down, and Clinton came out of that looking good while the Republicans looked bad.
I really have no idea what is going to happen in 2012.
"It is a damn poor mind indeed which can't think of at least two ways to spell any word."
-President Andrew Jackson
Clinton
was in office in a time where there weren’t any big problems. The economy was doing relatively well by the time he ran for his second term, and peace seemed to be breaking out all over. It was “The End of History.”
I think it’s likely the economy will still be bad in 2012. It’s the nature of a bubble bursting. And even if you discount that…there are fundamental problems that aren’t easily fixed. Hard to get elected if the economy’s bad, even if it’s not your fault.

i completely agree wtih that.
i mean i will probably still vote, maybe, but with the exception of the governor, attorney general (DeWine taught a class at Ohio Northern, and is intellectual dead, and pretty much a fuckin moron, and the epitome of a worthless professional political hack, so I had to vote for Cordry), and Congressman, i voted for the third party candidate, which were all libertarians, except, I voted for a socialist for Senate.

Yikes
It’s a wonder to me why there isn’t a state where all the dissidents go to form themselves a majority so they can elect their own whacko who represents their ideologies. You know, like Alaska.

Hey man, don't go lumping me in with those shitheads.
I would just like to see a republican that doesn’t give a fuck for moral codes or a democrat that isn’t trying to tell me wheren and when and if I can smoke.
While I may not seem like it I’m about as centrist as they come. There’s no place for people like me in the modern American political arena. So I’m done with it. Until there’s a reasonable middle I’m out of here.

Interesting point made on NPR this morning about the typical "bi-partisan" talk going on right now
and how that’s highly unlikely, since most moderate Democrats were wiped out in this election, moving the party further left, and the Tea Party moving the Republicans further right, the odds of any kind of compromise or consensus are even lower than before.
see what I did there with uzr? it’s like a LOL cats saber-pun combo.--Verka Serduchka
A lot depends on Obama
After ‘94, Clinton had to deal with Gingrich, who was arguably more difficult than the current Republican leadership. As a result of the mid-terms Clinton become more centrist and conciliatory. With health care out of the way, I’ll bet Obama takes a similar course.
"more" conciliatory?
jfc, they turned the healthcare bill into a squatload just to try to appease the Republicans and still got zero votes.
If he gives handjobs to Boehner during the SOTU, that might be more conciliatory.

because both parties are so damn middle that there’s not much difference between ’em anyways.

They claim to be middle but their not. There bases are swaying more and more
to the extremes. This election just showed that. Look at all the tea party candidates that won republican noms. Look at how stoked/pissed people got whne Pelosi lost.
These parties aren’t in the middle. They play to it but let their extremes lead the way.

There's a group
who is trying to get conservative Christian evangelist types to move to South Carolina so they can set up a government along their ideological lines. The theory being that South Carolina is already socially and politically conservative, and being a small state, will be easier to take over.

We need North Dakota because it's one of the few states producing
NHL-caliber hockey players and I want to beat Canada so damn bad in 2014! (This is not a joke. Fuck Canada.)
They can have South Dakota, Montana or Idaho. Fuck those places. We need to keep Utah for its sweet, sweet skiing.

the worst part about all this?
i was proven tremendously, embarrassingly wrong. i can remember a conversation i had on here 2 years ago (i think it was with Red Menace) about how libertarianism was dead. the financial mess was going to teach us all, once and for all, that lax regulation and small government fiscal BS was dead. it was the direct and so obvious cause of such a terrible, terrible thing, and we were all going to be the wiser for it.
but by the very next election, we have forgotten all of that. i am completely flabbergasted.

That's where I am
I think both socialism and capitalism will fail in the long run. They are both Ponzi schemes, reliant on constant growth. Like Kenneth Boulding said, “Anyone who thinks infinite growth can go on forever in a finite world is either a madman or an economist.” In the end, the economy is based on natural resources; we aren’t going to support ourselves in the style to which we’ve become accustomed by doing each other’s laundry.
Sure, it’s great right now (comparatively speaking, anyway). But it’s always great for those who get in early on a pyramid scheme.
As for the two parties…a plague on both their houses. Our whole political system is set up for stability, which means two parties, with little difference between them.

Correct me if I'm wrong...
Tea partiers can’t be re-elected, correct? Since, you know… they’re Washington insiders now…
"People don't kill people. Burning oreo packages kill people."
hah
The last time this happened, the freshman politicians who swore they would quit after one or two terms mostly ended up staying and becoming the Washington insiders they said they hated.
