Off season free agents and possible trade candidates

Ive been hearing some interesting names possibly being available, Kemp and Greinke jump to the top of my list.

Werth and Dunn would be huge improvements in left but i dont see it happening. Dunn obviously had his shot here, and Werth would likely stay in philly

I see kemp bouncing back huge, especially in gabp and defensively in left. i would take him in heartbeat

greinke would solidify our already impressive rotation, but lets face it we need an ace. 5 number 2's is a nice rotation but only for the reg season. it hurts in the playoffs.

i dont know who would be available at ss but i wouldnt mind janish/cozart holding it down if we picked up kemp and greinke.

Star-divide

Well what do you all think?

Im sure there are some people that will be available that i dont know about, and some other good ideas

Id love to hear your thoughts

2010 Central Division Champions, Your Cincinnati Reds!!!!!!!!!!!

I know that 'they' always say 'You can never have too much pitching'...

.. but unless the Reds are going to trade Cueto or Volquez they’d be nuts to spend what it would take to get Greinke.. to get Greinke.

Greinke's not free agent.

So I guess we’re talking about a hypothetical trade to get him.

Proceed.

well

the royals are looking to get rid of him, and for the right price i would take a chance on him rebounding with the switch to the nl

i would love to add a pitcher of Greinke's caliber

Voqluez, Cueto, Bailey, Chapman, Leake, and Wood are nice, but none of them have yet to pitch to the level Greinke’s proven to pitch at. Greinke could push this team over the top.

I don't think Werth is expected to stay in Philladelphia.

He’s at a point in his career where he should get a three or four year contract for nutty nutty money and the Phillies have that tall top prospect (name?) that Bronson fooled with a side-armed quick pitch Friday night. (I think he actually grounded out but he was down quickly 0-2 and Arroyo was having fun with him.)

I’m guessing that Walt will make all the right phone calls to Werth’s people but unless the Reds come into a bunch of unexpected revenues over the next three weeks, he’s prolly out of our price range.

I’d love to have Dunn back. (Don’t call it a Dunn-back!) But not for a three year deal (he can get three, can’t he?) and not for money that would be wasted when Dusty puts his defensive sub in late with leads.

By the way..

I just took a peek and saw that Dunn is due to hit his 400th on Memorial Day of 2012.

dunn

would be nice to have in the lineup, however his defense and price tag and history will prevent that from happening.

carl crawford would be a greta pickup, however im set on kemp. I think he could be gotten for less than he is worth due to the fact that he has had a down year and he is basically demanding a trade.

werth would be too expensive, and honestly i just dont like him. at all

Domonic Brown

I agree, Werth’s probably gone. He just switched to Boras.

by ken on Oct 10, 2010 7:05 AM EDT up reply actions

Werth’s not staying in Philly. He wants Jason Bay money and Philly is already at ~$140 M in payroll next year. The only way Werth would stay in Philly, is if Ibanez were tradeable, but since he’s getting paid obscenely next year, that won’t happen.

The Reds have a great core of young player who should be superstars for years (Bruce, Stubbs, Votto) and a rotation that in 2 or 3 years could be the best in baseball. Combine that with great, young bench depth (Heisey, Frazier, Cosart, etc.) and the Reds don’t need big names like Dunn and Grienke.

You’ll need to replace an aging Rolen (Francisco maybe, if he can avoid striking out 300 times a year) and start identifying a new “closer”. The Reds only need tweaks, this is a young club who should be the class of the NL in a few years.

Hanley Ramirez and Dan Uggla

will both be unloaded this year. But they are probably too expensive.

and the Marlins have recently been indicating that they might actually like to keep Uggla too.

Didn't I hear during the Rays game last night that Carl Crawford is a FA

our future left fielder!

Yes, Crawford will likely be available. The Rays can’t afford to keep him.

He’s had the best season of his career, so he’s gonna be expensive.

not so sure about that

Brian Cashman prides himself on “buying low.” He likes to sign players after a bad year, because he gets bargains that way. Or so he says. Crawford is coming off the best year of his career.

I’ve also heard that the Sox are really interested in Crawford. They can outbid anyone, if they want to.

Not to mention that Darnell McDonald stuck the entire year with them…

Janish should be our SS next year.

There just simply aren’t enough options out there via trade or FA, and since there’s such a demand for the elite ones, we’d have to grossly overpay.

Focus that (either our trade bait or our FA money) on LF, preferably one who can bat leadoff or second.

The only two that I can find that fit my qualifications (relatively young, signed, and not too too pricey) are David DeJesus and Matt Kemp…DeJesus being more of a leadoff/2 spot batter, and Kemp being more of a potential cleanup hitter. Kemp being younger and a RH bat means that Gomes would likely be gone. DeJesus being a LH hitter means Gomes could likely be kept on as a RH platoon/4th OF option.

Ideally, I like the DeJesus option more. He’s coming off a wrist injury, so some serious vetting would be in order first, but I’m sure the Royals would love one of our younger arms (and much like the Rolen trade, we’d be sending one of our young stud pitchers somewhere where they can’t burn us often, if at all.)

Set the gearshift to the high gear of your soul.

I think you guys could use a top of the order guy, high OBP and fast as hell. If a couple of those game 2 homers aren’t solo shots you probably still win that game even with the errors. Brandon Phillips is a very good player, but I don’t see him as a true leadoff guy. As a Phillies fan I just want to say(you may have heard this from other fans because it’s been said many times) that this Cincy team reminded me of the 2007 Phillies. Young team, not quite ready but you can tell they will be a force for a couple of years. I think the Reds core has big thing in front of it. Congrats on a great season, and good luck!

True enough

Though both of those leadoff homers in Game 2 probably still would have been solo shots.

Good call, I was hammered at the game. I obviously knew Phillips HR was lead off the inning/game. Didn’t know Bruce’s was, although when he hit that thing I was just wondering how far it was out, not if it was out. Went a mile.

Although the Reds may not be willing/able to put up the package required to

get him, Greinke could be a good fit for Cincinnati (beyond his obviously being an elite pitcher). I don’t meanto be cavalier about his struggles with anxiety, but as far as long-term sign-ability, a team with a market similar to Kansas City that’s on the ascent might be the most appealing to him.

Yeah, those guys and the Cincinnati Reds. They're a terrible football team. / Because they're a baseball team? / Exactly. You know who's the worst football team? The Philadelphia Flyers. - Best Show
