Playoff Roster- 25 Man. Take your pick!
So, we're all ready for the playoffs, and presumably, management has been making some pretty tough choices about the playoff roster. Here's what I want to know. If the decision was left up to you, what would your 25-man roster look like? (Not what you think the roster WILL look like, rather what YOU would make it)
Here's mine in no real order:
2. Joey Votto
4. Scott Rolen
6. Jay Bruce
7. Drew Stubbs
8. Jonny Gomes
10. Edinson Volquez
11. Johnny Cueto
13. Aroldis Chapman
14. Nick Masset
15. Arthur Rhodes
16. Homer Bailey
17. Travis Wood
18. Miguel Cairo
19. Paul Janish
20. Ryan Hanigan
(I feel like these 20 are probably going to be on almost everyones' rosters.)
21. Laynce Nix
22. Logan Ondrusek
23. Chris Heisey
24. Juan Francisco (I'm taking END over Alonso right now, but that kind of changes day to day.)
25. Bill Bray (Over Valaika, methinks)
Entirely possible that I failed miserably and left some people off the roster that are rather obvious choices since I did this off the top of my head, but that's not what's important- I want to know what you all would do!

Getting to the playoffs is not the goal.
Winning in the playoffs is the goal.

Fair enough
Like, I said- That kind of flips for me day to day.
"People don't kill people. Burning oreo packages kill people."
With Homer Bailey's extraordinarily long warm-up regimen, I'd leave him off the roster for a 5-game series.
I’d replace him with Sam LeCure, whom I feel could be counted on more solidly out of the pen. A case could be made for Jordan Smith over LeCure.
I’d also favor Alonso over END. END is easy to pitch around if you heed the scouting reports, whilst Alonso will give you a good at-bat every time.
I also would have played Orca at second base for a few innings today so that he would be more comfortable in the unlikely scenario of him being forced into emergency duties there during the playoffs.
"Don't turn off the TV if we've still got bats in our hands." - Dusty Baker
I can't imagine Cabrera
being forced to play 2B.
If BP is injured and Janish and Cairo are both abducted by aliens during the 7th inning stretch, they’ll still want Cabrera at SS.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
I'm not excited about END or Alonso.
END is an easy out (likely strikeout) against anyone we’ll face in the playoffs. No plate discipline.
Alonso hasn’t good since being called up either. I hope Edmonds is a go and will get a spot over these two.
I think you could also add Heisey to your list of locks. I don’t see any scenario where he’s left off.
Re: Heisey
Yeah, I actually meant to… I forgot about him at first and when I finally realized “Dur! I forgot Ecto-Cooler!”, I forgot to add him to the locks section. Good catch.
"People don't kill people. Burning oreo packages kill people."
I like your think
except no Odrusek (yes Bray because he’s lefty) and yes Valaika. I realy hope Dusty platoons Gomes and Nix (assuming Nix is full go). Is Edmonds definitely out?
Gotta put Harang on the roster
Sure, we all want to win in the playoffs, but these playoffs have to also be more of a celebration of something we haven’t done in 15 years.
Harang won’t make or break us in the playoffs, regardless of how we use him. Put him on the roster.
this would be insane
Every roster spot is precious in the post-season. No way should one be wasted on a player who isn’t going to play.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
i can't tell if you're being serious so i'll assume you're joking.

I'm as serious as a heart attack
How can you leave Harang off the playoff roster? I realize he’s probably done with the Reds, but it’s a ridiculous slap in the face to leave him off the playoff roster, and think of the trickle down effect of older, veteran players to see how the Reds treat Harang.

There's only 25 roster spots
You can’t use one of them for a mascot.
And I think everyone knows it, including Harang. He said goodbye to the reporters after his last game, and cried. A lot.
And I think all players, young and old, understand that if you can’t produce, you’re not going to be on the roster, no matter how great you once were. They wouldn’t want to play for a team that did otherwise.
The Reds gave Harang that last start as a chance to say goodbye. A tribute to his past glory. I think they’ve been more than fair with him.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Not to mention that he left that game with blisters
So even if he could perform, there’s no certainty that he’d be healthy and able to.

I tried to post this earlier
But I guess it didn’t go through.
Rec’d, for a fun post. Picking the roster is always a great discussion.
I find it hard to post what I want, rather than what’s most likely to happen, though. If I were in charge, I’d start Janish and seriously consider leaving Cordero off the roster. (Supposedly, the keys to postseason success are defense and a lights-out closer.)
Not gonna happen, though. So here’s what I think is…well, at least possible, if not the most likely scenario.
Lineup (8)
Hernandez
Votto
Phillips
Rolen
Cabrera
Gomes
Stubbs
Bruce
Bench (6)
Alonso
Cairo
Hanigan
Heisey
Janish
Valaika
Starting pitchers (3)
Arroyo
Cueto
Volquez
Relief pitchers (8)
Bailey
Chapman
Cordero
Masset
Ondrusek
Rhodes
Smith
Wood
For position players, only two spots are up for grabs, IMO. If Nix and Edmonds are healthy, they’ll probably get them. I went with Alonso and Valaika. Valaika is probably a long shot, but I like having an extra infielder, since Rolen, BP, and Cabrera have had health issues recently.
I wish the Reds had another Stubbs to use as a pinch-runner, but unless they do something unexpected, and find someone in the farm system somewhere, there’s no one.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
I believe this is close
but I bet they go with 10 pitchers and an extra hitter. Jordan smith is the one to go. They’ll add Edmonds, and prolly go with Francisco over Alonso.

I think they already said they will go with 11 pitchers
and I think Bray will be there in this series instead of Smith. I believe they told Smith, LeCure, Maloney, and Fisher to go to Goodyear and stay ready for possibly going to the LCS.

you're right.
I posted this, then saw that they announced 11 pitchers and that Smith was gone to AZ in the front page thread.

here's my take...
Rotation (3)
Volquez
Arroyo
Cueto
Starting Lineup (8)
BP
Cabrera
Votto
Rolen
Bruce
Gomes
Stubbs
Hernandez
Bench (6)
Nix
Janish
Cairo
Heisey
Alonso
Hanigan
Bullpen (8)
Cordero
Rhodes
Masset
Chapman
Ondrusek
Bray
Lecure
Wood
I would much rather have a PA by Nix or Alonso than END and Edmonds. Nix looks healthy enough to take some strong cuts off the bench and Alonso flat makes better contact than END. At first I was in favor of Valaika but I just don’t think he brings enough to the table for postseason play. I like Lecure over Bailey because he’s been great out of the pen lately…Bailey most likely won’t be starting any games and he’s a bullpen unknown.
"Now onto more important things: Punching Errorlando Cabrerror in the fucking tits." -Geki
I like LeCure
because he can pitch out of the pen or as an emergency starter.
If I did take him, I think it would be in place of Bray rather than Bailey, though. Bailey is a bullpen unknown, but I’d be willing to risk it.
About all Bray has going for him is that he’s left-handed, but with Wood and Chapman, I don’t think another southpaw is strictly necessary.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
that's true, it wouldn't be strictly necessary.
but i don’t think Rhodes or Chapman would be used as LOOGYs and those are nice to have. plus if we get deeper than this series, we could potentially use a 4th starter which is where Wood would be used. it’d be nice to know we have another LHP just in case.
i don’t think i’d have LeCure and Bailey since they seem like they’d serve the same purpose. if i have LeCure in the ‘pen and i need another RHP, i’d go with Smith.
i love Homer but the thought of him coming in as a RP makes me uneasy for some reason.
"Now onto more important things: Punching Errorlando Cabrerror in the fucking tits." -Geki
If we get deeper than this series
then we can make a new roster. In fact, we probably will.
I like Bailey because power pitchers tend to do well in the post-season. True, he might take awhile to warm up. OTOH, he could find an extra gear, when he doesn’t have to pace himself to go the distance.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
really? i didn't know you could make a new roster.
i thought once you set your postseason roster, it’s set for the entire postseason.
"Now onto more important things: Punching Errorlando Cabrerror in the fucking tits." -Geki
No, you can change it before each new series
Red Reporter or follow on Twitter: @redreporter. Buy The Wire-to-Wire Reds today!
not for the entire post-season
Just for the series. You can make a new one for each new series.
Many teams go with a 3-man rotation for the 5-game series, and a 4-man for the 7-game series. They also adjust the number of righties and lefties based on the team they’ll be facing.
The guys sent to work out in Arizona might well make the postseason roster for the next round, if there is one for the Reds.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Slyyyyyyyde!
Anyone?
Is there a way to see Homer’s splits since he came back in August?
I got this much from BBRef:
10 games
58.1 IP
3-1 (Reds are 9-1)
3.55 ERA
55 hits
59 K
19 BB
4 HR
Those stats look pretty good but FWIW the Cardinals and the Giants pounded him and one of his wins came against Padres even though he gave up two second-inning solo shots… The rest of these stats came against a lot of bad teams.
Smith, Fisher, LeCure, Maloney and Valaika
are out, though they’ve been told they’re in the playoff pool if someone goes down.
Here’s how I think it’s going to go down vs. my revisions:
Starters:
Hernandez
Hanigan
Votto
Phillips
Cabrera
Rolen
Gomes
Stubbs
Bruce
Nix (if healthy)
Rotation:
Volquez
Arroyo Wood
Cueto
Arroyo
Strictly bench:
Cairo
Janish
Heisey
Edmonds Francisco – I think I trust Francisco a little bit more than Alonso against major league hitting – and the ability to hit for more power and play 3B in an emergency puts him over the top. I’d have taken Valaika if it wasn’t announced that he was sent to Arizona.
Bullpen:
Bailey
Cordero
Rhodes
Masset
Chapman
Ondrusek
Bray

Is that a chance that Edmonds does not make the roster?
Seems like consensus at Red Reporter is that he’d be a wasted spot but am I right to assume that Walt and Dusty are smugly and contentedly thinking, “Oh yeah. Of course. Gotta have that veteran in there.”
by Fat Vegas Alan on Oct 4, 2010 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions
I think it will depend on his health
If he can’t play, he won’t be on the roster.
Also, he could sit out the first round, and be put on the roster for the next round, if the Reds get past the Phillies (and his injury is healed).
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Sure.
But I guess I’m thinking that four days before the game you don’t know if the guy can play or not (and maybe they do know and this is just standard procedural ‘gamesmanship’ by playoff managers) then the best that you can expect from the guy is a gimpy 80%.
(I don’t really care and I don’t think it’ll matter much. Really, the only reason I’m even finishing this thought and finishing this post is so that maybe juuust enough bellyaching over Edmonds might set in motion some transcendental baseball jinxy told-ya-so mojo that would help Jim Edmonds hit a NLDS pinch-hit home run.)

but
I thought Dusty announced the Reds were going with a three-man rotation, and Wood wasn’t one of the three?
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
If I recall..
it was Walt who announced that the Reds’ rotation. I thought that was a little bit odd.
(But I could be wrong about this.)

Yes
I was “modding” it by adding Wood.

Alonso vs. Francisco
I’m seeing a lot of varying opinions between the two of these players, and am curious as to how the actual roster will play out. I personally would rather have Alonso, although clearly neither one of them has played that well in the last few weeks. I think Alonso’s track record in the minor leagues is substantially more impressive, and I have more faith in him being able to potentially figure out the tough pitchers that the Reds will face in the postseason. Francisco’s lack of any plate discipline whatsoever really frightens me in the playoffs, especially since whoever (if either) gets this spot will likely be called upon to pinch hit at crucial junctures in late innings against good relievers.
In my estimation
Francisco edges out Alonso because (1) he has more MLB and high minors experience, (2) he has more power, (3) he can play 3B in an emergency, (4) he’s almost, but not quite, as slow on the basepaths
3 and 4 don’t matter very much, but they’re good tie-breakers.
Alonso is the more patient hitter, but that’s less important in high-leverage, pinch-hit situations, which skew toward fly balls and extra bases – especially against pitchers who don’t walk very many to begin with. And by all appearances, Alonso hasn’t had a chance to make even an initial adjustment to MLB pitching, with only 29 PAs under his belt. Francisco isn’t some grizzled veteran (he only has 84 PAs) – and may never make the eventual strides that Alonso will – but he’s likely to be a little more comfortable up there, having had more reps both in the Bigs and the minors. We know he’s a free swinger, but he’s shown some ability to drive the ball in the majors and has shown quite a bit more power than Alonso to this point. It’s possible Alonso is better at ID-ing/handling offspeed and breaking stuff, but I just wouldn’t trust him as much to continue his first cup of coffee in the playoffs.
And Francisco has historically beat up on righties. That’s a useful skill with Nix in questionable health. There’s a definite need for another bench power bat to face righties.

Also worth noting that Francisco would likely hit against a RHP, since that's the entire Philly bullpen
So his strength against righties is a big plus here. I’d take him over Alonso.
