SIS - 3 Artists, 3 Songs

I'd like to take a moment to ask about a seriously important and omnipresent subject here at Red Reporter: music.

Star-divide

I don't wanna miss out on great music that you hold dear to your heart. I want to experience it with you, and add into my music treasury the artists who are previously unknown to me, but should be known.

So here's the deal...please select your favorite 3 artists and your favorite song from each (since 2005) and list them here. It would be awesome if you could also include a link to a YouTube video or audio link for the uninitiated. If you list more than 3, you will be openly mocked or ignored...likely both. No one has the time nor desire to sort through your favorite 20 artists, so get with the program and color inside the lines for once.

To start off the fun, here are 3 from me:

Robert Randolph and the Family Band - Ain't Nothing Wrong with That (2006)

Keb' Mo' - Remain Silent (2007) (starts at 0:55)

3Oh!3 - Deja Vu (2010) (my fave performance because they do it in cheesy vest with fake porn mustaches)

No song is for everyone...but sharing is fun for everyone. :)

Two artists, one song

Drive-By Truckers and the Hold Steady performing Let There Be Rock.

The song is actually older than five years, originally off of DBT’s “Southern Rock Opera” album. It was a concept album about Lynyrd Skynyrd, and this particular song is about the connection between death and rock, and conversely how life-affirming rock can be before you cross that line into death. As Patterson Hood says, it’s about how rock and roll saved his life when he was a teenager. He sings about the bands he got to see in the late 70s and 80s, and how they were closer to fleeting gods than bands. There was an element of luck involved in seeing the great ones before they burned out rather than faded away.

In November of 2008, the Truckers went on tour with the Hold Steady (these two were famously described as the only bands that smiled while they were onstage) in the “Rock + Roll Means Well Tour.” I love this video because it’s not only a great rendition of the song, but Craig Finn is also there giving hints of his hardcore 80s kid past, adding another layer to the type of anthemic rock that means to the world to teenage kids. And also because Hood refers to erstwhile accordion-playing Hold Steady member Franz Nicolay as “one of those.”

If people want to know about the history and power of rock, I think they should listen to this song. More often than not, it brings a tear to my eye when I listen.

Hmm

Then howsabout Bang! by The Raveonettes? I mostly just like its chorus, but it’s also a fantastic summer song.

by Brendanukkah on Oct 26, 2010 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions

The DJ on XM/Sirius channel 26 was telling me...

…about The Raveonette’s cover of Stone Roses’ ‘I Wanna Be Adored’ and I was like, “Oh man oh man oh man! This is gonna be great.” (See, I contend that no 19 year-old anywhere ever loved a song as much as I loved the original.)

But then she played it and it just wasn’t. Ah, youth.

But what the hell is a Chicken Ring? Even the McNugget, that apotheosis of food facsimile, is stamped out of its processed chicken-amalgam paste to resemble "random" cuts of chicken; it tries to look like a food that may exist in nature (if nature had a deep fryer). But rings? It's like the White Castle people were like, "You know what? Fuck nature. Fuck it. Make the chicken into fucking rings.

Goddamn, I love the Truckers.

My favorite’s probably either Bulldozers and Dirt or Women Without Whiskey .

Two questions: 1) Did you notice the recording of Cooley singing an awesome soul song with filthy lyrics during the intermission during their last tour? 2) Any idea where I can find a recording of that?

Also, Petey

I’d been meaning to ask you about this. A friend of mine from high school is in a band in LA called Jail Weddings. They’re song, I Just Thought You Were Someone I Knew is very catchy and has been in heavy rotation at my house. I was wondering what kind of impact if any the band was making on the local scene.

My friend is the violinist.

I'll play, but for the record I don't like the post 2005 rule.

Fiery Furnaces – “Chris Michaels” from the album Blueberry Boat (2004)
These guys are a love ’em or hate ’em band for most people. I think Blueberry Boat is one of the best records of the last 10 years.

Caribou – “Melody Day” from the album Andorra (2007)
One of the few new acts that I pay close attention to. Great live show to boot.

the Third Guitar – “Baby Don’t Cry” from the compilation Florida Funk (2007)
This song was recorded in the late 60s but was reissued on a Jazzman comp in 2007. This is a monster jam. If this don’t make you want to dance, you ain’t got no business having feet.

Watch it, ass blood.

I don't like the 2005 rule either,

but my purpose was to catch on to current artists I may have missed. We have all offseason to do plenty of these. :)

Some interesting stuff here that I hadn't known about.

I like the unusual flavor and choices of The Fiery Furnaces. I think my fave is Tropical Iceland.

Caribou is nice. I tend to prefer fast music, regardless of style, but this is very Temper Trap. Thumbs up.

“Baby Don’t Cry” is some tasty funk. Funk is my favorite type of music, and I confess to being a funk snob. For me, funk has horns instead of strings, a prominent, bouncy bass line, a funk guitar, and a brother on the mic. This is yum.

Thanks, MBP!

Get the funk up out of my face.

Some links to great funk comps for any interested parties:
…King Funk – Monster jams from Cincinnati’s King Records and its subsidiaries
Chains & Black Exhaust – Super rare heavy funk and black rock.
Florida Funk – Funk 45s from the Alligator State
Worlds Rarest Funk 45s – Most of these 45s are worth more than my car.
Anything that the Numero Group puts out in their “Eccentric Soul” series is worth a listen.

1. Neko Case. If Jeff Keppinger sounded like her, I’d say that he flat-out sings. Best voice I’ve ever heard.

2. The Walkmen – saw them earlier this week and was reminded how much I like them. Here’s something from the new album.

3. I like Belle & Sebastian. Sue me. New album is a dandy.

Neko Case is giving a talk at National Geographic

Unfortunately, it’s just about her photography. Ben Folds and Andy Summers are doing similar talks, too. In other Nat Geo music news, David Archuleta and Will Calhoun (the drummer from Living Colour) both came through the Geckos exhibit at the Nat Geo Museum on the same day last week.

I'm surprised the last 5 years have been so good

It’s hard to narrow it down, but since I always play by the rules…

Leo Kottke and Mike Gordon, Sweet Emotion
Ozomatli, Can’t Stop. This whole album kicks, but I was only allowed to choose one song.
Switchfoot, Mess of Me. Props for the Sting reference.

Also, my tinny little computer speakers sound terrible.

Leo Kottke and Mike Gordon sounded amazing.

Ozomatli’s is a good find. Can’t Stop and Sturday Night are tasty tunes.

Switchfoot is also really tasty. I knew the song “We Are One Tonight” from my work on Gossip Girl (laugh away, kids), but now they are on my radar and in my iTunes. :)

Nice job, bbjones. You are hereby awarded another 3 & 3, if you’d like. :)

i love that intro

It feels familiar, but you just can’t quite place it, until all of a sudden you think…. wait, really, could this be….

I actually like Ozo’s and Switchfoot’s earlier albums better. Ozo’s self-titled album is their best, and they are amazing live. They are all just having a blast every show, and its a big fun party. Switchfoot’s Beautiful Letdown is my favorite, though I haven’t gotten all of them yet.

Sequels are never as good as the original, but let’s see.
Monsters of Folk, Dear God
Manu Chao, Rainin’ in Paradize, but really I like 1998’s Clandestino album better.
Rodrigo y Gabriela, Tamacun. There are no drums on this whole album. There was a sign up, so I couldn’t post this one.

Bonus Dance Funk: the JBs. Those guys were tight. Is there any good funk recorded after 1979?

The JBs fucking rule.

They are all from North Avondale here in Cincy. Two of the greates instrumental funk jams of all time:
The Grunt
Honky Tonk Popcorn (Credited to Bill Doggett, but it is in fact the JBs)

Hell Yes, Tamacun.

It’s amazing to me that a dude who can play that kind of Latin guitar is actually the weaker half of a band. The shit Gabriela’s doing up there is so good it should be illegal.

Just realized all the music I like is over five years old

Favorite song of the last five years is Eddie Vedder’s Society.

Besides Vedder(&PJ) I enjoy John Butler Trio. Don’t really have a favorite song, so here is their opening track off my favorite album.

And I love this song, but I think it has to do with the video accompanying it. OK, it has a lot to do with the video.

Pandora has made me extremely lazy on the new music scene. What?, put the effort into finding new music I like? Sheesh, the new music should come find me!

by jacob brumfield on Oct 27, 2010 1:16 AM EDT reply actions

I hear you about Pandora.

Sometimes when I find a new band, I’ll make a Pandora station specifically for the band, and see what suggestions come my way.

The INTO THE WILD soundtrack is hauntingly yum, but I knew about that one since I read the book, saw the movie, and have a friend who is a VedderHead.

You’re right about the John Butler Trio. It’s all good. A Little Gold Star for you.

And the video “Inspired Bicycles” is killer, and I agree that it’s all about the video. :)

Here is a video of a song that I love. I think I would really like the song regardless of video, but I simply can’t stop watching this video repeatedly. I make no apologies.

My 'favorite' songs from the past five years...

…are done by mainstream-y white guys that probably need no introduction (I could go on and on about Beck’s ‘Sea Change’ but Petey, I’m sure you’ve heard it and love it and it might be from 2003 or 2004 anyway) or the shit I’m currently rocking is coming from within such a specialized niche that you wouldn’t be interested.

So allow me to bring my own custom-made coloring book to the table and give ya three easy-going ditties that I really really enjoy even though they’re from three artists that I am not overly familiar with.

But what the hell is a Chicken Ring? I used to at least know of the hot pop songs, even if I wasn’t a fan of them. And I remember hearing Taylor Swift for the first time about a year ago and being stunned at just how mediocre it sounded. Like, “This is what everyone is getting so excited for?”

However, Bad Romance by Lady Gaga is a brilliant song (and somewhat strangely comes up as a suggested video when you watch “Town and Country” by Sinful Savage Tigers.

i wouldnt say anything else here (or anywhere) is more "grown up" than DMB

im saying that as i matured and my taste in music became more nuanced and educated i liked DMB less and less. i’ll readily admit that the DMB scene makes me like it less rather than more, but that doesnt change the fact that the music is bad.

by Charlie Scrabbles on Oct 27, 2010 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions

That's fair, and I personally don't care whether anyone likes it or not

(but it’s not bad. There are a lot of interesting songwriting things he does, the musical abilities of everyone in the band—save the fiddler—are top notch, and they are easily one of the tightest groups around. It may not be your cup of tea, but it’s definitely not “bad”)

My curiosity is that DMB elicits more violent, angry digust and condescencion than pretty much any group I’ve ever seen. I just really can’t figure out why that is. Is it purely because of the perceived audience? Or is it because they have been very successful and people don’t like that? It just seems weird to me.

For example, I have absolutely no time for Arcade Fire. I can honestly say I think they are the most overrated band of the last 2 decades. Yet I wouldn’t say some of the nasty, vitriolic stuff about them that I’ve seen written about DMB.

I think the negative stuff about DMB is probably more reserved for their 'audience'

I can definitely see that.

Not too long ago I was at a college graduation ceremony and Dave Matthews was receiving an honorary degree from the institution. There were two ‘typical’ fanboys (backward hat wearing frat boys) standing up front the whole time. His speech was a mess, he’d been up the previous night doing god knows what and he was just incoherent, babbling, making no sense at all. But the entire time these two fanboys are up there with their hands raised yelling/praising how awesome Dave is/was. Dave was a mess.

At this point I had moved on from DMB some time ago, but this definitely made me realize that while I no longer really cared for the music of DMB, I really hated his ‘audience.’

So I regret even posting the DMB link, since I really think people should check out the other 2

If you have any inkling that you might want to get into jazz, people should click the second link and listen to some of those tracks. Not necessarily the first one, but the big band stuff. It is some of the most listenable and interesting big band music going right now.

don't regret posting the DMB link. if you like it that's all that matters.

i am by no means a DMB fan but i agree with everything you said—they’re unfairly talented and they are extremely tight. i think being a musician creates a whole different perspective on music that non-musicians frankly don’t understand. i’m not trying to be condescending either, i really do believe that.

the only song of theirs that i truly like is called “You Never Know” and most DMB fans think i’m a retard for liking it. it’s a pretty cool song though.

I mean, isn't everything about the "experience?"

I like their music. I like the improv. I like the lights. I like that it’s never really the same each time…I like the surprise. I like how most people there really hang on each note.

If that’s the experience, then yeah, I do. I like Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings because of their music (in that I can throw a song on my iPod and love it), but seeing them live is better for the “experience” because you’re surrounded by people having fun.

I prefer 'Nails in Louisiana.'

That song is not 'good.'

But it’s not bad either. If I were to give The Loved Ones the benefit of the doubt and assume that song is supposed to be about how much it sucks to monotonously pound nails in Louisiana (and Biloxi and Alabama) then they’ve got a certain something going on. (And it’s well done. The band is tight. Sounds like they care about their craft and it sounds like they know what they’re doing even if songwriting is not one of their strengths.)

But if it’s supposed to be some sort of an inspirational tribute to the American working man well, that song has only the pounding piano in the middle keeping it from its mundane existence as just another arena rock anthem. (And most of those are not good.)

I have bad taste in music, so I won't actually play by the rules...

1. Yojimbo – Sunday Bananas. This is the funk band I recently saw live in New Orleans. They were amazing live – the little recording they’ve done so far doesn’t feel as good. Also, I know nothing about funk, so maybe they’re terrible – but on the other hand, I generally hate funk, and I like this band.
2. Clazziquai – Tell yourself. Ok, this is by no means one of my favorite bands, but it’s basically the least shitty k-pop out there right now, and I thought it was kind of interesting. Hey, at least I didn’t bust out Super Junior on y’all.
3. Potshot – Freedom – This definitely breaks the rules because it’s a japanese ska-punk band from the 90s, but it is the only song in the world that makes me dance every damn time I hear it.

This team wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for all the kipper-snacks.

The 2005 rule severely limits me...

Most music these days sucks (for me, obviously everyone has differing opinions)

My three- or at least 3 that I can come up with right now.

1. “A Lifetime”- Better than Ezra. “Desperately Wanting” is one of my favorite songs of all time, and I love me some BTE.

2. “The Cave”- Mumford and Sons. This song just gets more amazing every time I hear it. I freaking love these guys. I hope they don’t get bad when they get insanely popular…

3. “The Geeks Were Right” The Faint. I had to include something by The Faint They’re just fun to listen to.

"People don't kill people. Burning oreo packages kill people."

by crolfer on Oct 28, 2010 12:25 PM EDT reply actions

Better than Ezra is extremely underrated

I always hear people rattling off mid ’90s bands, and they always put Better Than Ezra next to the Gin Blossoms, and then I want to punch them. OK, so Better Than Ezra at their worst (“Good.” What a horribly bland song) is about equivalent to Gin Blossoms. Problem is, the Gin Blossoms at their worst is the same as the Gin Blossoms at their best, because they use the same rhythm and the same 4 chords in every song.

So, the worst of Better Than Ezra is about the same as the best of Gin Blossoms. Yet, because that one crappy BTE song got all the airplay, people think they’re the same damn band. But In the Blood , King of New Orleans , and “A Lifetime” are damn fine songs.

Woohoo! A thread to wake me up from my long RR slumber!

1. The National – Mistaken for Strangers – One of many great songs by The National about balancing the desire to maintain your idealism with the pressure to “fall in line.” I think this is their best attempt at tackling the topic; though “Bloodbuzz Ohio” comes close, if for no other reason than that one phenomenal line in the chorus (and, if you’ve heard the song, you know exactly the one I’m talking about). As a guy who just passed his late-20s, this is a prime example of the right song at the right tiime in your life.

2. The xx – Crystalised – It’s not a love song, it’s not a breakup song, it’s more a song about everything that happens in between. There’s some happiness, some sadness, some hope, some despair, and the reserved tone of the song gives it what I think is the most interesting part: a restraint indicating that these people have something invested in their relationship. Not bad for a couple kids just a little bit past 20.

3. White Rabbits – Percussion Gun – Sorry folks, no deep lyrical meaning here, just a drum beat that will stick in your head like a goddamn claw hammer.

My turn, at long last

but first, good on y’all, these SIS were always the best part of RR back when the team was a joke. And this should be fun if I can correctly keep it within the 3-year limit.

I’ll try to do this with the best songs I saw live, because, well, otherwise it changes all the time. And in my mind, the best live songs need a lick to jump to.

1) Dexateens, Pine Belt Blues. The only live version I can find on Youtube is this iffy one, but do yourself a favor and download this one. It’s similar to Drive-By Truckers but in my mind, a lot more gritty and alive. They may have broken up (possibly) but they are the best live show I’ve seen. That guitar lick will stay with you for ages.

2) Minus the Bear, Into the Mirror. For the Wolf Parade fans in you, but a different flavor of dark. All their songs just smell like Seattle…I celebrate their whole collection, really, but this will be the one I choose for this.

3) Airborne Toxic Event, Gasoline. Again, all I can find is an off, acoustic, version, so here’s the LATFH-tastic video. There is nothing more perfect than a high school love once you get into your mid-20s. And the lead singer is always fantastically drunk on stage at concerts, which is a good time
