Bruce wants 6 years
MLBTradeRumors links to a radio show. Says Bruce's agent says they are open to a 5 or 6 year deal.

The agent said they are looking for something closer to Justin Upton's deal with the DBacks
which was 6/52.
But Bruce hasn’t yet had the success Upton had at the time of his deal, so I’d say that might be a bit high for him.
6/40 seems low, though. I could see it being somewhere in the middle.

6/45ish.....I'd be all over that
Then lock up Votto
Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, is just a freight train coming your way...
@btcoop71
Me too, especially if it was a bit back-loaded
Thing to keep in mind with Bruce is if he is a super-2, that means that he’d hit arb 4 times, so a 6 year deal would only buy out 2 FA years. That definitely makes a difference.
But something like:
2011-2 mil
2012-4 mil
2013-7 mil
2014-9 mil
2015-12 mil
2016-13 mil
That’s 6/47 and doesn’t kick in until current expensive contracts are off the books.

Hopefully we're selling out every game by 2015
If I’m Bruce, I’d probably want more on the back end because of inflation and stuff. But 2015 we’ll have Bruce, Votto, Stubbs, Cueto, Volquez, Wood, Chapman, and probably some others all due megabux.
Yeah, but in 2015, the Cubs will win the World Series over some team in Miami.
It was foretold in Back to the Future 2.

But that was in the old future!
This team wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for all the kipper-snacks.
As optimistic as I am about Bruce
Are we really ready to throw @10 mil/yr those last 3-4 years on a guy who is still relatively unproven? Just seems scary
Then again
he could become a total stud and we have him at a steal. I like him, it sends a good message, fuck it I’m sold. DO IT
It's a risk any time you go six years with a player
And if it doesn’t work out with someone who isn’t a free agent, it’ll look foolish because you were’t obligated to go beyond one year. But if Bruce rakes the next few years he would absolutely make more than what nyc posted. Especially if the sport gets richer and the teams start to pay more for free agents again (pre-recession, salary inflation was around 10% annually). So I think it’s a good compromise.
Who is a more sure deal?
No one is 100% lock to be a cornerstone. At some point you have to take a chance. Jay Bruce is asking for a fair offer not trying to break us. Why not go for it? We do this with every guy.

Agreed. It'd be one thing to suggest this for a pitcher,
but Bruce has been pretty healthy, he’s made steady progress every year, and he looks to be on the verge of a break out.
IMO, the only thing that could make the deal I listed not be worth it would be a major injury.
Or, it could be looked at this way: At current rates, $47 million should buy you 11-12 wins on the free agent market. Assuming that stays steady (which it won’t. If anything, wins will become more expensive and that amount will buy you less in the future), Bruce just needs to accumulate 2 wins a year to be worth it. He was worth 5 WAR this year.
Sounds like a pretty safe bet to me.

Locking up Jay and Joey (The J & J Boys)
for 5 or 6 years would be risk, but one I would take if I were BOBOWALT-
If you live long enough, you'll see that every victory turns into a defeat.

Sure 5-6 years package with performance targets
For the performance that Bruce had put up this past year, there is no question that he was underpaid. But does that mean the Reds have to rush out there to overpay him and mortgage the future of the Reds? Hell, no. Bruce has been improving each year but:-
is he a .300 hitter? – we don’t know for sure;
will he hit 25+ homers each year? – Bruce is capable, but we don’t know for sure;
more powerful than Votto? – probably not;
how was his base stealing and base running? – definitely needs improvement;
fielding and assists from outfield? – good; can be gold glove player material every year
If you ask me which player Bruce resembles the most? I would say he plays like our Columbus alumni, Paul O’Neill, in right field. Paul got paid well after he left Cinci to play in NY and performed well for them in the ALCS and WS.
Unfortunately, small town market players get small town pay packages. Juice them up in the bonus packages as incentives if Bruce wins performance awards, appears in the All-Star games, etc.; and can help the Reds to make it to the NL championship series and the World Series.
