2010 Game 161 Thread: Brewers at Reds
Milwaukee Brewers at Cincinnati Reds, Oct 2, 2010 1:10 PM EDT

It's looking more and more to me like Homer Bailey will be the odd man out in the rotation. He's been pitching well - 3.13 ERA over his last 4 starts - but then so has everyone else. The Reds have had quality starts from their starters in 16 of their last 20 starts (In case you are wondering, the 4 non-QS are from Arroyo, Cueto, Bailey, and Wood). That's somewhat good news as teams that get quality starts from their starters are 152-67 in the Divisional Series. Then again, not all quality starts are created equal, right?
As you know, the Reds won't be playing at home for the first game of the playoffs. Any changes in their playoff situation are now completely out of their hands. In fact, at this point, you are better off watching and rooting for the Padres than the Reds (assuming you don't want to face the Phillies in the first round). The only way the Reds can play someone other than Philly is by the Padres sweeping the Giants and the Braves losing at least one more game. And if there is a 3-way tie, then it gets crazy.
Go Reds!

What happens if Atl SanD and SanF all tie?
SD and SF play a game for the division
the loser of that plays Atlanta for the Wild Card.

SF-SD would be on Monday
ATL would play the loser on Tuesday. Reds would then travel to Philly Tuesday night if ATL wins and play on Wednesday. They’d travel to the west coast if ATL loses and play on Thursday.

Nice to have consistent hitter in the 8 hole esp. if somehow Alonso should happen actually get on base.

Jocketty just said they probably are going with a 3-man rotation in the first round
I’d guess that means no Cueto in the first round, right?

I'd go Arroyo, Wood, Cueto
Of course, I’d rather see a 4-man with Volquez.

Yeah, I don't know how much I like a 3-man rotation built around Arroyo..
..when facing all the Phillies’ lefties.
And I think most of us would like to see Wood set up to face them twice but I can’t see Dusty giving the ball to a rookie in a Game 5.

I went to this game
First time I’ve ever seen OSU play in person, and only the second big time college gootball game I’ve been too. It was a great time. I really liked Memorial Stadium, and all the Illini fans were very nice. There was a good sized OSU contingent on hand, and I’d like to think we didn’t make spectacular asses of ourselves. If anyone in DC asks me why I miss the Midwest, I will point to the Italian sausage I ate at the stadium. Damn was it good! The meat was so juicy! The bun freshly baked! No one cooks like that on the East Coast.
And man, I need to move to a college town.

I think we can succeed without Gomes
though it would certainly be beneficial if he busts out or becomes a different kind of player in the playoffs.
I agree, but it does seem he is up with runners in scoring position more often than not
a few rbis from Gomes in the post season will go a long way i think

Gomes cant hit
And cant field… But at least he has a mohawk
jeez, he needs to work/concentrate on hitting opposite field
that will theoretically help his patience, and cut down on stikeouts. sliders from righties are killing him

that's not a surprising stat
it only makes sense, considering the strikeouts, to make the adjustment, at least with 2 strikes anyway, to think about hitting the ball the other way. i mean he does have at least one oppo field HR i can think of.

Yes I speak from experience.
I kinda want Homer and Volquez both in the playoff rotation over anyone right now.
And unfortunately I don’t think either gets a chance.

Agree
Here’s the rule:
No interference shall be allowed when a fielder reaches over a fence, railing, rope or into a stand to catch a ball. He does so at his own risk. However, should a spectator reach out on the playing field side of such fence, railing or rope, and plainly prevent the fielder from catching the ball, then the batsman should be called out for the spectator’s interference.
Since the fan reached over, that call was a gift.

So sneaking away at work to drop by and say HOWDY
Pretty decent showing by Travis Wood last night and Beetle Bailey today. Nice to see Joey and Rolen get the day off, I was at the game last night and Rolen looked somewhat in discomfort by the time Dusty pulled him. Also nice to Dusty sticking with Gomes and putting him in the 4 slot. We need Gomes to come up big in the playoffs.
No question that Jay Bruce is just getting tuned up for the playoffs.
Next Year could look something like this:
Stubbs CF
SloCab SS
Votto 1b
Rolen 3b (maybe some Juan Fiasco if he isn’t traded)
Bruce RF
BP 2b
Alonso lf (do not be surprised)
Hanigan 60%/ Hernandez 40% C
Pitchers abound as well.
Too bad Hi-Z can’t play 3b…
I hate to say it but Gomes and Nix may be looking for work next year,
