I was speaking with a family friend over the weekend who attended a special GE event that featured Walt as the guest speaker. Apparently, to the suprise of all in attendance, he spoke very candidly, and mentioned amongst other things, that the Reds are working to sign Votto to a life-time contract. My source is highly reliable; I hope Walt's words are as well.

If this happens....
It will either be the cornerstone move that makes us contenders for the next decade. Or it will be the gaudiest millstone anyone could ever imagine.
Am I correct in thinking we have control for 3 more years? I was thinking more along the lines of restructuring the next 3 years (to avoid any arbitration unpleasantries) along with a fatty 7 year extension. 10 years from now Joey will be 37, if he wants to go be a hired gun for the Yankees at that point in his career I would not be heart-broken, and he will still be wearing red in Cooperstown.
That being said; a shrewdly worded lifetime contract could essentially spread the (high) cost of his peak years (10-15) over the next 30 years leaving the Reds with more salary room to put the correct team around our star (He would not be a serious MVP candidate if he had played 1B for the Pirates last year.)
Whatever they do, i hope it leads to Joey being fairly compensated in a way that leaves him happy, and leaves the Reds able to have the necessary salary flexibility to win. and I hope it happens well prior to Spring training.
i don't really like the idea of a lifetime contract
lets say Joey goes left shoulder first into an obese left handed releif pitcher covering home plate, and he is sapped of all his power.
The Reds had two young players in the last 10 years have their careers severely effected by shoulder injuries. Sean Casey’s shoulder injury sapped him off his power. Ray King effectively ended Kearns career as an elite talent and turned him into a journeyman outfielder.
Joey could have a series of serious injuries, that on their own aren’t career threatening but together add up to transfer a superstar into an average player.
Ken Griffey Jr.’s series of injuries changed him from an elite to an average player.
The Reds have to be wise with their contracts, and have to realize the true way to win is to continue to pump prime prospects through the organization who can replace older more expensive players.

Completely understood.
So how long is the longest you would wrap him up for?

buy out the last three years of arbitration
and the first two years of free agency.
Plus he will be in his early 30s, so he could still get another big contract after that as a free agent.
This deal would give the Reds his best years, and it would give Votto the security of at least one big contract in his career. If he goes into arbitration this winter, wins, gets a $10M contract, and tears his rotarcuff and loses all his power in May, he will never see that big long term contract.
Similar to what the Reds did with Harang and Arroyo.

I'm on board with this idea, I'm leery of a LONG deal

Other comments he made..
The Reds currently have the 4th largest “player development budget” and aim to have the largest in baseball
They expect to be quiet in the free agency and trade market this winter
The team has a few other lower level prospects that are currently not receiving much press, but the interior scouts expect to be big players for the major league club in the next few years.
