What is the university for? To educate students. But what has a hand in making that happen? Athletics revenue.
Case in point: Thompson Library renovation, and the significant grant from OSU’s athletics dept.

Contrary to popular belief, a lot of college sports programs are money losers.
I suppose you could look at paying big bucks for a coach as an investment at possibly earning more money from your sports program…but then, it’s the same with professors. At the time, they were hoping to become a world-class university.
