The Waiting for the Barry Larkin Vote Thread
As I post this, we're two hours away from the announcement of whether Barry Larkin gets into the Hall of Fame. Here are some things to read as you bite your nails:
My case for Barry's induction, posted in October.
Thoughts and prognostications on Larkin's induction, posted last month by ken.
Opinions by CTrent and Mark Sheldon.
Feel free to link to other relevant stuff as we sit on the edge of our seats.

How the f**k does that moron get a vote?
First time I shot her, shot her in the side.
Hard to watch her suffer, but with the second shot she died...
support
Probably not a lot of fresh water going under this bridge, and it’s clear that the people in position to say yes or no on Larkin already have his career in front of them, on paper, film, lore and documented story.
The more interesting aspect of H of F voting from here on out is whether the voting members can separate true talent from enhanced talent. At what point can we say, “this guy is clean and we can prove it.”
Larkin apparently is clean and nobody suggested otherwise. Not many players land on this pile, at least not many who have H of F numbers.
Don't try to win every game, just the last one.
The only "dirty" guy on the current ballot is McGwire
I’m not sure how much the “clean” perception helps Larkin as a SS. The guys who will benefit from that image are the sluggers whose numbers will be directly compared to the alleged juicers. Fred McGriff will be an interesting case. He fell just shy of 500 HR and was never considered the best at his position, but he consistently put up very strong numbers. He could get a bump for being “clean.” It will start to get interesting the next few years as Bonds, Sosa, Sheffield, etc. get on the ballot. Oh, and Clemens.
agree, to a point
If the H of F is about letting guys in based on position, that’s not the same thing as voting players into the Hall, is it? I mean, as a player, Larkin is either qualified or not. We can’t say, “well, if he was a slugger, he’d get a pass because he was clean. But since he’s a shortstop, we don’t really think it’s a big deal.”
My point is that eventually, the list of guys who can be nominated, alleging their numbers aren’t Janish-like, will have to be weighted on a different standard — probably one that translates to their gate value.
Don't try to win every game, just the last one.
You win. Nice job.

I'm going with 68%
What we know:
6 of 13 mlb.com writers voted for him
8 of 12 E$PN writers
Rosecrans, McCoy, Daugherty, Fay
Rosenthal, Poz
Who else?
2 of 3 SI.com guys voted for him
First time I shot her, shot her in the side.
Hard to watch her suffer, but with the second shot she died...
Here's the most recent Repoz update I've seen
Barry at 56% with 125 ballots.

How do they do this? Post the results online? Or is it a presser and we'll find out via tweet?
All UK fans are toothless racist hillbillies.
Online or on TV
The announcement of the 2010 class of the National Baseball Hall of Fame is slated for 2 p.m. ET today in New York. Fans can watch a live simulcast on either MLB Network or MLB.com, but in the hours before then, many of the candidates will sit by their phones, anxiously awaiting the call.

MLB says the announcement is coming at 2
I’m assuming we’ll see a tweet at like, 1:45 or something

Since MLB is broadcasting this on their network I'm sure they'll do all they can to prevent a premature tweet
But we’ll see. Someone higher up at the BBWAA could leak it.

What's the buzz about Dawson's chances?
Yeah, those guys and the Cincinnati Reds. They're a terrible football team. / Because they're a baseball team? / Exactly. You know who's the worst football team? The Philadelphia Flyers. - Best Show

Repoz has him at 78%
My guess is that he’s got a much better chance than Larkin this time around, despite having (from my point of view) a weaker case.

I'd be irritated if Dawson gets in
especially if someone like McGriff gets bypassed. Fred McGriff far more deserving. If I had a vote it would be: Blyleven, Alomar, Larkin, and McGriff.

McGriff's fielding & position kill his candidacy in my book.
WAR has him a bit below the 20th percentile hall of famer throughout his career.

I'm more of a peak versus career guy
Especially for a slugging 1B. McGriff had some great seasons in the early ‘90s but mostly his career was good, not great. I’d rather reward guys like Will Clark who left the game when they were still great rather than the guys who just hang on.

Dawson strikes me as the definition of borderline
I think it turns on his defense. His slash number are pretty pedestrian over his career, but he looks better through the lense of WAR right, when adjusting for era?

I guess that's not at all surprising
Alomar, Larkin and Raines really were shafted. Blyleven has to get in next year.

some projections had him in the 20s, I'm somewhat relieved with 50+
"Some times you get lucky; some times you get Willy Taveras." --Fay
Proof again that Gammons is only right 30% of the time.
Give me a lineup of 9 Ryan Freels, and I'll show you a team that can't pitch.
I think the reason Alomar doesn't get in
is because of spitting on the ump. That’s why Hal McCoy left him off his ballot.

Maybe Barry should have spat on more umps
Give him a 20% boost.
He definitely should have spat on more baseball writers.
In David Well's autobiogrpahy
He mentions that some folks say that the ump called Alomar “spic” to his face right before the expectoration.

I know Alomar was a great player and think he should be in
but I don’t understand why he (whose numbers are nearly identical to Barry’s) is considered so much better than Barry? I know they played different positions, but can someone enlighten me?
I think the injury factor hurts Larkin
Also, Alomar played much of his career in the AL East….a little east coast bias helps him.

this
Barry was hurt by not playing on the east coast.

yeah, that's what i think
it’s just so lopsided that i thought maybe i’m misremembering him. i don’t recall him walking on water.
I remember watching him and thinking he was a Hall of Famer
But I also thought the same thing about Larkin.
From what I remember Alomar was widely referred to as a HOFer during his playing career
Like a lot of 2B, he aged quickly and was done as a productive player in his early 30s. But he had a great peak that coincided with a couple of World Series. He may have benefitted from being in a baseball family as well.
by ken on Jan 6, 2010 2:25 PM EST up reply actions
I don't think he has much of an objective claim to being better than Barry
Barry has him on total accumulated WAR according to Sean Smith, 69-64, where Alomar has him by about the same margin Win Shares. I think it’s basically a wash – with Larkin playing the more premium position and Roberto Clemente award trump cards.

Well, Andre deserved to make it, so I'm happy for him.
As for Hal McCoy…he must have forgotten that Babe Ruth once tried to punch an umpire, which is worser.

Well.
I’m pissed now. BBWA can go die… This event is angering enough to deserve a facebook status.
