Bats fans are teeming with excitement

Hardly mediocre.

He’s got the ability to steal 100 bases!

hey I see what you did there

Could this be a pre-cursor...?

Maybe we sign him as AAAA filler so we have the flexibility to trade Heisey/Dickerson/T-Virus…?

Otherwise, barf.

Set the gearshift to the high gear of your soul.

I see no reason for this move...

Unless it is to set up another. We already had 4-5 guys competing for the open LF position and 4th OF’er. And any of those guys could have just as easily spent more time at AAA in case injury required their call up. The question is, who’s getting voted off the island?

Remember Jacque Jones?

Josh Anderson will be a Louisville Bat for most of the 2010 season.

Jones was cut though...

and played in an independent league last year. Or is that what you mean?

Pretty much.

We freaked out over the Jones signing last year on a similar deal, and it amounted to nothing. On the other hand, Darnell CrackDonald was our Opening Day CF last year, so I guess people have a right to be concerned.

Since the Reds are still broke

Jocketty’s going to employ a brute force strategy of signing as many LF and SS-capable infielders to minor league contracts. I think there’s a certain degree of logic to that approach, even if these guys are strictly retreads. There’s a chance one of these signings turns into a Jonny Gomes – though the Reds have been pretty dense when it comes to evaluating talent. Signing Anderson might also help put the feet of Wlad, Dickerson, Heisey, Janish & Co. to the fire, while providing a little flexibility. Anderson would scarcely have anywhere to play in AAA if Heisey, Nix and Frazier are all there, let alone the big leagues BUT make this kind of move might allow the Reds to feel confident in cutting Taveras, bringing up Heisey and tradeingsomeone else for a useful return – with the potential upshot being that Nix, Anderson or others could outstrip expectations and provide respectable depth in AAA in the event of inevitable injuries.

Basically

I don’t think Anderson will be at all useful to the big league club – but he, along with a few more similar signings could re-jigger things in a positive way. At the very least, I would think he makes Taveras irrevocably obsolete. I’m not sure if Anderson – or Nix – has the right to refuse assignment, but I think this would be a decent chart:

MLB OF:
Bruce
Stubbs
Dickerson
Heisey
Wlad

AAA OF:
Frazier
Anderson
Nix

I also wonder whether this is an indication that Gomes is no longer being pursued. I wouldn’t think so, given that those on minor league contracts can be cut, but it’s also possible Jocketty is stockpiling for a trade.

I would assume, given Gomes' comments that he wants to test the market, that Jocko doesn't think he'll be back

Re: Anderson, I do wonder if this means a move, (CUT TAVERAS), but it could also just be a case of Jocko throwing a ton of crap at the wall and seeing what sticks.

by nycredsfan on Jan 6, 2010 12:15 PM EST up reply actions

I think it's both

I just can’t imagine a scenario where it makes sense to keep Taveras out of anything other than pigheaded stubborness. There are now 4-5 MLB guys ahead of him on the MLB chart for CF, all of which hit better, can steal bases and play as good, if not better, defense:

Stubbs, Dickerson, Heisey, Nix, Anderson

I think Anderson is a waste.

minor league numbers: .294 / .344 / .378 / .722 with poor defense in CF, but good D on the corners.

So he’s a speedier Cesar Izturis, but with less MLB success and no ability to play a defensive position where he’d be useful to us.

My depth chart might be more like:

RF Bruce
CF Stubbs (with additional C-Dick as needed)
LF:
Bladdy
Frazier
Heisey
C-Dick

Traded: T-Virus (as part of a multi-player deal to save face. We’ll pick up 75% of his contract)

AAA:
END
Nix
Anderson

Ah, this is flawed, but I’m over it now. :P

Give me a lineup of 9 Ryan Freels, and I'll show you a team that can't pitch.

Depth of talent is one thing

But Bladdy, Frazier, Heisey, and END all need to play every day.

I never said he wasn't a weak player

But you’re undercutting yourself here. According to that depth chart, Frazier and Heisey are splitting time four ways with Wlad and Dickerson in LF… how is that anything close to playing every day?

Play Frazier every day in LF, END at 3B in AAA. Heisey is ready to have a chance start ing against LHP in the majors. What the Anderson signing does is allow the Reds to, while this should have been a foregone conclusion early, cut bait with Taveras while having MLB-capable depth in AAA so they might hazard trading some of their outfield dephy yand don’t have to rely solely on guys who aren’t quite ready or unproven in the bigs. That lack of planning results in stupid crap like Sutton playing OF or Darnell McDonald becoming the Openin Day starting CF.

has he signed any shortstops, though?

I guess there are just so much more OF retreads to sign, though.

Chris Burke

I’d expect them to sign or trade for at least one more mediocre SS and run him against Rosales/Sutton for a bench spot. There’s really nowhere to put anyone in the AAA middle infield unless a fairly significant trade goes thru.
