Bug Quiz
Think you are as smart as Crolfer? ID these bugs I took pictures of at the SF Zoo today.
I hope someone figures them out, because I can't remember all of their names from the little signs in front of the aquariums.
Post your answers here, or on the picasa picture. Prize is going third wheel out to dinner with Crolfer (you pay, and I didn't ask him, so I hope it's okay.) If (when) Crolfer wins, he can talk to himself and LB, which will really freak her out.

Some of them are kind of tough to get a real good look at.
1. Red-Spotted Assassin Bug (Platymeris rhadamanthus)
2. Some kind of Phasmid. A walking stick or close relative. Maybe a Thorny Phasmid or a Giant Walkingstick. Kind of tough to tell with that angle.
3. Was that one a Brown Recluse?
4. Family Scarabaeinae. Definitely one of the dung beetles.
5. A giant African Scorpion. Probably genus Pandinus.
If you want a better shot at ID’s, ask the nice folks at bugguide.net to take a look at your pictures. Post a topic under the forums to see if they can give you some help.

that didn't take long
If I really wanted a good ID, I would have taken a picture of the little sign in front of each bug. :)
Just wanted to keep you on your toes, Crolf. :)

Without reading the posts yet...
1. Appears to be shaped like an “assassin bug” or “assassin beetle.”
2. Tough angle. I’d say it’s a katydid or walking stick.
3. That’s an arachnid. Not exactly an insect.
4. Beetle, perhaps a “click beetle”
5. Scorpion. Not exactly an insect.

I did really well!!
A predictable second place among RR. :)

I meant "bug"
in the “ew! a bug!” sense, rather than a member of the order Hemiptera. :)
Plus, they were in the Insect House at the zoo! Who am I to question them? :)
Nice job, Petey!
2 is indeed some kind of Phasmid. I forgot which. It was called a something something giant phasmid, or some such.
3 is a brown recluse.
4 is a dung beetle. You can even see the dung.
5 is a giant African scorpion.

Yeah... It gets better
About 11 or so, she started feeling like complete crap, and quickly went downhill. Poor thing could hardly walk. I drove her car back to her friends’ dorm with her friends and we did our best to take care of her- I ended up staying the night, and get to come back, and walk through downtown (which separates our campuses) in my jacket, short sleeves… and pajama pants. Talk about looking like a walk of shame. Luckily she was feeling better by morning, so that’s all that really matters- think her blood sugar was off and she was way dehydrated. And now I’m in my 8 am class… nothing like economics to wake you up from a long night…

Did I ever tel you about the night to ingested some MDA?
Remind me to do so when we have more time…talk about going to class in your pajamas…

That's not a walk of shame, it's a walk of chivalry.
And I find that it’s effective to berate any clothing taunters with vitriol about how they’re not cool enough to get away with wearing pajamas in public, because they don’t have enough game to pick up a gal while wearing only pajamas. :)
What did you expect? It's the internet. Some of us are full of crap.
apparently
Wearing pajamas in public is trendy in the UK. So much so that some businesses are banning it.
