Predict the Opening day 25-man roster

It's early but I am bored and have been thinking about the what the 25-man roster is going to look like on opening day.  So here it goes:

  1. Harang - SP

  3. Cueto - SP
  4. Bailey - SP
  5. Owings - SP
  6. Cordero - RP
  7. Masset - RP
  8. Burton - RP
  9. Rhodes - RP
  10. Herrara- RP
  11. Bray - RP
  12. Fischer - RP

  20. Hanigan - C
  21. Bruce - RF
  22. Stubbs - CF
  23. Balentien - RF
  24. Dickerson - OF
  25. Nix - OF

More ST predictions

  • Frazier to the 40-man coincides with the DFA of Willy T
  • Maloney's ST ERA is over 5
  • Rhodes may be traded if Bray looks solid
  • Pryce makes Owings better with a lower than 4 ST ERA
  • Heisey might beat out Nix, Wood might beat out Owings

options

In addition to Bailey and Balentien, Owings is out of options. I believe Bray is, too.

Any of those 4 not making the opening day roster, opens a spot on the 40-man roster.
Lincoln is not on the list original list, DFA Taveras, 60-dayDL Volquez…there’s plenty of space on the 40-man roster.

Here is my idealized roster., with the ages at the beginning of this season. The roster that would be loaded with prospects, but is probably more realistically 2011, after the Reds dump Arroyo and Harang. Also does not include Mike Leake, who could very easily be in the rotation over Wood and Chapman or even Volquez if he doesn’t recover. This is a roster with a lot of what ifs, but I put it together just for fun to see what our prospect situation looked like.

CATCHERS. Average Age: 25.114

Hanigan, Ryan 28
Hernandez, Ramon 33

INFIELDERS

Francisco, Juan 22
Janish, Paul 26
Phillips, Brandon 28
Rolen, Scott 34
Valaika, Chris 23
Votto, Joey 25

OUTFIELDERS

Balentien, Wladimir 24
Bruce, Jay 22
Frazier, Todd 23
Heisey, Chris 24
Stubbs, Drew 24

PITCHERS

Bailey, Homer 23
Burton, Jared 28
Chapman, Aroldis 22
Cueto, Johnny 23
Del Rosario, Enerio 23
Fisher, Carlos 26
Herrera, Daniel Ray 24
Leake, Mike 21*
Masset, Nick 27
Owings, Micah 26
Viola, Pedro 26
Volquez, Edinson 26 *
Wood, Travis 22

Projected Lineup

I don't think Bray is out of options

But I don’t think he’ll make the opening day roster. He had TJ surgery in late May. It takes pitchers 12 months to fully recover – some say 18 months is better.

Bray might be out of options

I feel like he spent some time in AAA in 2007 and some time in AAA in 2008. He didn’t break camp with Cincinnati last year. But I feel the Reds would be better served by him opening the season on the 15 day DL and doing a 30 day rehab assignment in Louisville.

I think that both catchers will get close to equal time

RayMoan is getting old and even Dudsy must realize that he can’t catch more than 65-70 tops in 2010
Hanigan will get a lot more playing time this season but he seems to need a little rest as well or his hitting may go down the tubes.

Hopefully duds will give them equal time, or even give Hanigan closer to 60-65% of the stars.

bbjones mentioned this in the reposter

but it looks like Johnny Damon is probably going to have to settle for a 1 year deal for 4-5 million. I know Walt probably doesn’t have that much, but if he could scrape it together, that would be a great signing.

Damon figures to be worth 8-10 mil this season, according to fangraphs.

He’s probably slightly below average in the field, but with this team’s offensive woes, he’s exactly what they need. It definitely won’t happen, but it should.

Couldn't agree more.

Put Stubbs next to him, Rolen/Janish in front of him, and the GABP short porch behind him, and his defense might not look quite so shoddy.

His bat would be an oh-so-welcome addition to this version of the Reds.

For his first year and a half he had about 200 innings well above a 100 ERA+, with decent ratios. The question to me is whether Price can return him to that level or whether Owings can’t be the same pitcher because of his shoulder.
