Who is your Favorite Current Red?
This is a simple enough question. Who is your favorite current Red? We will take a poll and see who wins. My favorite Red is Aaron Harang, but in 2005 he was a site for sore eyes after years of terrible starting pitchers. Lets see who wins. I feel like I have a decent amount of current players, both star players and scrappy fan favorites. This is for all the marbles. All right go vote.

Joey Votto is mine
because I was, at the height of my baseball career, a good hitting left-handed first baseman. Joey Votto is basically everything I wanted to be.

I went for Dickerson
It was tough between him and Harang. And Harang is still my Most Respected Red.
But Dickerson won my heart with that Cubs series when he made diving catch after diving catch. Plus he gets on base. Plus he recycles, and spends way too much time on the internet.
If he was more sturdy, he’d be my ideal baseball player. High OPS, fast as lightning, killer defense. As it is, he’s pretty dang alright

I love this thread.
Remember like, well, all of 5 years ago, when there may have been votes for 3 players tops? I looked at this list, and it took me 5 minutes to pick one. Maybe its the wealth of young players who’ve yet to disappoint me, but I really like most every player on our roster (obvious under-performing/overpaid CF excluded).
I went with Stubbs. It’s not just that I like his game, or that he plays where I played, but I think there’s a lot riding on his shoulders for the next 2 years. If he plays well, he opens up several other players as trade bait to land a key future piece (i.e., Heisey/Dickerson won’t have to play CF.) I just hope his power numbers stay on the rise.
Bruce and Cueto were close 2nds.

I'm surprised the best pitcher to take the mound for the Reds this decade
only has 1 vote. I know it would be a landslide for Votto, but Harang has been a workhorse of a pitcher. Until Dusty broke him in 2008 he did what we needed him to do.
Harang became my favorite Red on this day. Harang started on 3 days rest replacing an injured Eric Milton. The Reds bullpen was blown to pieces the day before in an 11-0 loss. Harang came out and took care of business and shutout the Brewers.
Remember when he went toe to toe with Chris Carpenter and won. The Reds won 1-0 and Harang pitched 7 clean innings.
Bailey, Chapman, Cueto, Leake, and Volquez; the future is so bright I have to wear sunglasses.
I really like Harang
He does good work in the community and he seems like a pretty unpretentious, down-to-earth guy. I voted Dickerson, but am equally willing to throw my support to Harang or Votto.

I like Aaron a lot.
But you only see him every five days (unless Dusty goes full retard). Guys like Votto, Bruce, hell even Danny Ray — you see them at least three times a week.
Unless a starting pitcher is Cy Young-caliber guy or some sort of cult of personality like Mark Fidrych it’s hard for the average fan to make them they’re favorite.
Also, baseball fandom tends to slant toward offensive prowess.

depends on how the young guys develop
if Cueto, Bailey, Volquez, Chapman, Leake, and Wood are all performing well enough to sure up the rotation, i can see them declining the option, offering arb, and taking the picks when he signs a 3-year deal elsewhere. or pick up the option and trade him as a valuable starter on a 1-year deal at market rate. there’s plenty of directions for Harnann’s future to go.

- = denotes got a pretty fair shake to prove if they could be an everyday player
The correct answer is these are all guys that I rooted for as kind of an underdog, hoped they would get a shot to prove themselves. These are guys I believed in. I wanted them to succeed. I wanted them to set the world on fire. I still root for these players when they are no longer Reds.
If Nix doesn’t make the team, that means he’s apparently not one of the 5 best OF we have, and looking up and down the depth chart I have a hard time believing that.

don't believe it.
You cannot have had Jorge as your favorite player.
"The USA despite its flaws and corruption and overall messiness is still a great and powerful instrument of freedom and hope for the entire world." - Madville
You're partially right
The 2007 Reds gave us such troopers as:
Edwin Encarnacion
Adam Dunn
Jeff Keppinger
who also competed for my Reds love
However, I knew Adam Dunn was legit. Edwin was an everyday player, so he got his shake after we showed Jerry Narron the door (since Narron hated EE). Keppinger also played in 2008, which was more when I really wanted him to shine.
But, there was just something about Jorge Cantu which made me root for him more than other Reds. I really wanted him to play his way into the starting lineup. I believed that he could play 2B and we could move Phillips to SS. Hell, part of me believed that maybe he was blocked by some solid talent, yet he was an awesome asset off the bench.
However, for the 2007 Reds, Cantu was one of my favorite Reds, probably #3 behind Dunn and EE respectively. So if you wanna call shenanigans for him not being #1, then fair enough.

Joey, Jay, Homer
I like youth, it make me optimistic for the future.
Who the hell was our catcher last year?
Also, I didn't realize how good Homer got last year
I guess 3 months in the big leagues did him some good. We’re optimistic about him next year, right?
Definitely
I think he’s finally arrived.
"They're the ones that gave you the keys, they can’t get upset when you crash the car" -- 'tHan on my being a mod
i'm cautiously optimistic
HIs 2009 WHIP was 1.47, and his K/9 was 6.8 while his BB/9 was 4.1. Even over his last 9 starts he still walked 24 batters in 58 innings. I hope he is over the hump, but I am not ready to pencil him in for 200 innings of ball with an ERA under 4.

Definitely
I think his final stats for the year will be decent, with stretches of brilliance and suckitude.
But at the end of the day, I’ll take that from a 23/24 year old.

Seems like we’ve been hoping for greatness/giving him shit for 5 years.

No kidding.
He was drafted six years ago at the age of 18. He was the third high school taken in the draft at No. 7. Matt Bush was No. 1 overall and Mark Rogers was No. 5.
Now, which then-18-year-old would you rather have right now? Bailey, Bush or Rogers?

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
I do love me some Laynce Nix but bruce still gets the nod...
He gets up every morning at 5:15am. Immediately he begins his morning stretching routine, followed by a quick visit to the bathroom and then down to the kitchen for breakfast. A protein shake, 4 raw eggs, two Quaker energy bars and some instant oatmeal. Then down to his own workout space where he runs 10 miles in 47 minutes on his treadmill.
After a shave and a shower he dons his workout togs and KSwiss runners, throws onhis jacket and takes his ‘work’ bag with some extra clothes and hops in his car, and heads to the clubhouse. When he finally arrives at the GABP Clubhouse and training facility, he is the first one in…always the first. He heads to pool area strips down to his naked buff self and dives in. After 20 minutes of laps he hops out and drys off.
Back into his warm ups he heads to the lockers. He opens the door to his own locker and looks in…there it is his uni…the Red shirt with the name Bruce…
He looks longingly at it and then heads to the tunnel where he pushes himself to do 15 minutes of 100 meter suicides. Breathing hard he heads to the weight room. Once there he checks the time, he’s right on schedule….8:05…he works with the long pulls, he has to build up his shoulders more he needs to really to be able to ‘pull’ it this season. He goes through his entire routine and is out of the building by 8:45am.
He jumps in his car and pullls the visor down and looks at himself in the mirror satisfied that this year he’s really going to ‘rake’.
But first he has to get to work at the Madisonville Dollar Store by 9:30….
He’s my favorite Red
He’s Bruce, Bruce Stagnolia

I'm trying to work out "cg machine."
Is that some new technology I’m not up to speed on yet? Or a misspelling I just can’t figure out? Depending on the answer, that may become Harang’s new nickname in my mind.

I haven't been since 2006, but . . .
I went for eight times between 96 and 2006. AZ in march is
outstanding (75 to 85 degrees, cool nights), but now that the
Reds are moving to Goodyear, it’s a very good possibility. I’ve
been a diehard since 1977 (arrival of # 41) and used to roady to
SF every year to catch them. Of course, ST is a great relaxed way
to enjoy sunshine, catch the youth and get a few autographs. In
past years, it was hard to put up with the Giants, A’s and Mariners
mania, since the west coast fans are prevalent. It does tend to bring
back all the great memories of taking loads of $$$ from local A’s fans
in the 90 Series. Thump x 4 !!!!
P.S. – October/November is great as well. Have taken several teams
to the MSBL World Series tourney. AZ fall league is sweet ! Hope to see
you there !! GO REDS !! Can you scrap ???
It's GO time !
The Enquirer
has a guide to Goodyear.
I would like to go sometime, but I probably won’t be going this year. Goodyear is harder to get to and less appealing than Sarasota, IMO.
