HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME

Well gang..its that time of the year again..It is my Birthday (Jan. 20) and you know what that means. It is time to get off your ass and buy me a present. That’s right damn it, and this year I want a lot more presents than last year. And just because you gave me a present last year doesn’t get you off the hook for a bigger one this year. What is on my list this year? No it’s not donations to Haiti or giving your car to WVXU or giving away your old junk to Good Will.

NOPE. I want the same stuff as you gave me last year on my birthday: All you have to do is grab a few canned goods, some household items, maybe some slightly used blankets..stuff like that and go to your local FOOD BANK/HOMELESS SHELTER and donate it. 2008 was the worst for the dislocated, the mentally ill, the lost and those suffering from drugs or running from abuse since the great depression. In 2009 even more people were in need for shelter, clothes and food than last year. In 2010 the government, Non-profits, Temples, Mosques, and Churches will be hard pressed to help more than last. The economy has hit our support services hard.

So instead of giving me those box seat season tickets to the Reds…take a few bucks and turn it in to something that will make a big difference in the day of a another person, one who is not that different you or me. So if you don’t want me to go BONZO on you please participate. There is so much aid going to Haiti (and they need it) that local food banks and shelters actually lose donations in these times of great disasters. Give now, give plenty, and give often.

Your Pal

Mads

I got you a Republican Senator from Massachusetts

Is that a good present, or are you going to take it back for a refund?

What, me? Being negative? No. Never.

I myself didn't do it.

A whole bunch of people in Massachusetts apparently did, though.

Methinks if you had received this for your birthday, you’d have taken it back or re-gifted it.

Obama fucked up

simple as that. He sold us out, I thought he was going to bring real change ,and he didn’t. Thus I’m never voting for a Democrat or Republican again. Both the mainstream parties are awful and in the tank for their big buisness backers. I feel hard for Obama, and he let me down. I hope he is a one term President, and that is something i neverthought i would say.

heh

I warned you . It was clear to me from the campaign that Obama wasn’t different. Not coming out of the Chicago political machine.

I think people are very angry, mostly over the economy. Incumbents are going to be vulnerable.

I wonder if we might see the rise of a third party. The US can’t really support more than two parties, but in the past, there have been third parties that eventually supplanted one of the main political parties.

Excuse me but this MY Birthday!

No one person has the power to make things better or screw them up more (not even George Jr.) so lets concentrate on me and my presents!

If you want to help change things get off your butt and go volunteer, you can be a tutor, work the soup kitchen, help the elderly etc. But today take a minute out of your very excellent life and drop off my present at the food bank, the free store or Shelter nearest you.
Thanks

Unfortunately we'll probably just see the rebirth of one of the two parties before we see a third

The country is too connected these days for new ideas to grow by themselves without being picked up by the Reps or Dems or a faction thereof.

I was in that boat of extrememly disappointed citizens that the dems took this opportunity to reform healthcare and shit the bed. The “overhaul” didn’t address what every single american wants to fix, and instead came up with something that makes health insurance companies and senators’ special interest richer. Maybe now politicians will be forced to progress by compromise, which is the way it’s supposed to be. Thanks for doing something right, Mass.

by Brian B on Jan 20, 2010 9:48 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

I don't think that's necessarily true

Because of the way our nation was designed, there’s no way a radical party could come into power. The founding fathers were very worried about that kind of thing, and so the Constitution promotes stability over all.

However, that means you have a lot of diverse interests in the two big tents. Many of them aren’t necessarily natural bedfellows. I could see a new party rearranging those interests into a new combination. Ross Perot came close, not coincidentally during another recession.

Compromise gets interesting.

While it is a manner to get things done, it’s not necessarily always the best method. If I think Willy T should start all 162 games and you think he never should start, we could compromise at 81 starts. We end up with something no one wants and that is of no benefit to anyone, except maybe Willy T, who in this case would be a special interest group.

I know it’s not always that cut and dried, but you get the point.

I hear the line (not from you Brian B, just teeing off on a topic or two, here) that "if we all could just believe the same thing, we could get things done. If that’s true, the solution is simple. Give up your beliefs that don’t mesh with mine, adopt my beliefs and we’ll all think the same way and move in the same direction. Probably not going to happen, huh? Probably shouldn’t happen.

I don't think compromise is the best way either

Often it’s the worst way. But it’s the better alternative to “majority rules,” which is the unfortuneate way of democracy (which is what americans believe in even if we are a republic). Compromise is the best that the minority can hope for sometimes, and I’m okay with that.

by Brian B on Jan 20, 2010 9:49 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I agree

There’s this MIT scientist who uses mathematics to prove that the electoral college is actually a good thing. (He’s testified before Congress about it.)

According to him, the electoral college serves as leverage for minority views. It maximizes the power of the individual vote. He credits this with the nation surviving as long as it has. It provides a way out of “the tyranny of the majority.” 49 is never going to beat 51, and people stuck in that situation may resort to bombs instead of ballots.

And interestingly, he likes to use baseball as an analogy. At the end of the season, we could just award the trophy to whichever team has scored the most runs. But we don’t. Instead, we play the world series, where how the runs are grouped determines the winner.

He uses the 1960 World Series as an example. The Yankees massively outslugged the Pirates; if the winner of the series was the team with the most runs scored, the Yanks would have won. (The equivalent of the raw vote.) Instead, a player not known for his bat ended up hitting a walkoff homer in game 7 – the equivalent of one voter turning an entire election. And nobody thought it was unfair.

You don't think the political equivalent of the '60 WS is unfair?

That’s the 2000 election to the nth degree. Which is fine for sports, better drama and all that. But not for something meaningful.

by Thundering Turtle on Jan 21, 2010 12:36 PM EST up reply actions

If an election winner lost the popular vote by a 2:1 ratio,

which is equivalent to the runs scored ratio of the ‘60 WS, I don’t think anyone could call the election fair. A 1,000:999 ratio (or whatever the ’00 election was) is much different, imo.

The size and composition of each district does make a difference.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

by BubbaFan on Jan 21, 2010 2:50 PM EST up reply actions

i've always thought

we should go back to the original electoral college.

After all, it was a 2 week trip from Augusta to Washington back then. You couldn’t have the candidates tool all around the protocountry.

So, actually vote for a local elector. That is, find a person in your community who is a good judge of character and level-headed. Choose that person to go pick a president on your behalf. I’d even say that no one can declare their presidential candidacy until the electors have been chosen.

That way, the choice would be made on face-to-face interaction rather than sound bites.

my objection to the 2000 election

Is that I think Gore actually did win the electoral vote.

I don’t think the winner being the guy with fewer raw votes is necessarily unfair.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

by BubbaFan on Jan 21, 2010 2:41 PM EST up reply actions

i have mixed feelings on the electoral college

mostly it seems to be an antiquated system which doesn’t even serve its original intended purpose, which was to keep the Presidential election out of the people’s hands.

It also over and under values votes. As an Ohio voter my vote was more valuable in the 2008 election than any vote in a state that clearly was going to go for Obama or McCain. Is is it fair for people in Texas and Massachusetts that their Presidential vote is meaningless, and that the candidates focus their message on the swing states?

But it also means that small states get attention in close elections.

fairness
Is is it fair for people in Texas and Massachusetts that their Presidential vote is meaningless, and that the candidates focus their message on the swing states?

Yes, I think it is.

Natapoff (that’s the mathematician’s name) argues that every vote having equal power is not what we should strive for. In a dictatorship, everyone’s vote has exactly the same power: zero. That is not what we want.

What we should be aiming for is maximizing voters’ power – that is, increasing the chance that any one person’s vote can determine the outcome of the election.

The math is really interesting. Among other things, it shows that gerrymandering doesn’t work. Rather than increasing the voting power of minorities, it allows candidates to ignore the entire district.

Health care is only one of many issues that continue to plague the unemployed and disenfranchised.

Why on God’s Green Earth do we in America think that every thing has to be tied up with our jobs…esp. health care? So people like my son, who’s infant daughter was born with serious eye issues spend more money per month on their daughter’s healthcare than they do on their mortgage. And the health care doesn’t cover everything they need to buy by a long shot. Bizarre that here in the home of the brave and the land of the free…no politicians are brave even get free of Health Care Special Interests and their tantilizing MONEY.

In November, the Republicans got what they deserved.

Now, and probably this November, the Democrats get what they deserve. Are the people angry? Absolutely. Some rabid Obama supporters likely feel like, “meet the new boss, same as the old boss.” Change promised. Status quo delivered. Excuses abound.

Those who weren’t thrilled with Obama but were tired of Republican bumbling and decided to give the new guy a chance likely are saying, “I should’ve known better.” There’s a fair amount of people who feel like they went to bed at 2 with a 10 and woke up at at 10 with a 2. Many McCain supporters probably feel like he wouldn’t have done much better, if at all. Conservatives see the Obama-Pelosi-Reid trilogy and can’t believe these are the people running the United States.

As a registered Democrat who is quite conservative, I await to see which party develops true leadership and servanthood.

What if everybody woke up and realized that you can’t eat gold and it doesn’t keep you warm or dry? I guess it might indirectly help you make progress with the opposite sex, but only indirectly. But after the Big One, I gotta think there is going to be a lot more interest in non-gold commodities.

I will not be surprised to see physical confrontations between the Ultra Right Maniacs and the rest of the country(including Left wing Anarchists idiots) before the summer is over…militias and the like…It is becoming a short step from Tea Parties and Health care reform to a call to arms by the crazies on both sides…sound ridiculous?…if the economy isn’t repaired and health care isn’t reformed and the fat cats can’t keep getting fatter and the everyday citizen continues to get crushed by the emerging ‘fascist democracy’ of the Big Corporation drive government behind the Washington ‘government’…well then some serious shit is going to go down. Very serious and I’m not being paranoid. I work with a lot of blue collar folks who are up to their necks in debt and are working their butts off getting farther in debt these folks are crazy angry about their situations and blame the tax spending big democrat government.. I also work with the very wealthy who are beginning to see their entitlements being stripped away and they aren’t happy either and of course there’s the unions and and intellectuals who want security and ‘fairness’ for all, these folks are more pissed off than I’ve ever seen them – specifically at the Right wing crazies….then of course don’t forget the anarchists, the desperate, the minorities (most of whom are powerless)…shit will hit the fan soon and shots will be fired…If you remember Watts and Detroit in the ’60s..then imagine Washing DC, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Miami, LA etc etc..all blowing simultaneously…

(although what we have is corporatism, not really capitalism.)

14 years of a GOP congress played a huge part in getting us into this mess and everyone forgets that as regulations were stripped away and taxes were reduced to unsustainable levels while we simultaneously waged two wars. it’s like their memories have been dissolved by the culture of binge drinking and binge religion and now they want to put the same people back into power who made their lives bad in the first place. yes, i have said before that i can’t stand the DLC and they are also devoted disciples of corporatism and they worship their god the free market, but the republican party is the party of big business, and they are not only not apologetic about it, but they actively flaunt it at every opportunity. The US Chamber of Commerce, which i sadly worked for four years, is more powerful than the White House that sits across the street from it. Literally.

I don’t understand why on Earth people won’t inform themselves and why they vote for a party that actively exploits them. Didn't they kill some guy named Joshua for throwing the merchants out of a big temple and helping others?

Mads,

I’ve noticed a lot more people on the DC streets recently, and they’re not the usual mentally ill or drug addicts I’ve come to pass every day – they’re sad enough – but now I’ve seen whole families on the streets. One day right before Christmas I saw two little kids playing with toys on a corner downtown. I thought they were adorable. Then I looked up and saw their father with shame in his face and a sign that read, “Please help, we’re homeless.” I nearly started bawling right there on the street. You could tell they were newly homeless from the way the father could hardly look people in the eye, like it had taken all the courage in the world to swallow his pride and make that sign. They were standing there right in front of a decked out store window with white holiday lights and little snowmen frolicking among the various products that were on “SALE!”

It’s tough to believe that such things can happen in the wealthiest, most powerful country in the world. But I suppose you don’t get wealthy and powerful by caring for others. I mean, who cares if 40,000 Americans die each year for lack of health insurance, right? Certainly not a majority in this country, not even Massholes. Said the great Abraham Lincoln upon Americans slaughtering each other over the way people treated fellow human beings, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” He was quoting some tax collector named Matthew, who said, “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation and every house divided against itself cannot stand.” This Matthew guy is famous for writing about being a good human being. Or something like that.

And here so many people are patting themselves on the back for watching John Mayer on a telethon and clicking the mouse a few times to donate to Haiti while the roof’s collapsing on their own house. Not saying donating to Haiti is bad, but why does it take a disaster to call people to action? Or Mads’ birthday?

What a fucked up world we live in.

Another good thing to do is volunteer to tutor homeless kids. They have a heckuva time getting their school work done (or often even getting to school). So much of work is done online these days, and the kids have to share school computers with short time limits, and there’s that whole other issue of making sure you get the family into a shelter so you can get beds for the night. If you have a laptop for the kids to use, you get friends for life. You can always meet up at a cafe with free wifi.

As it is, happy birthday. I truly hope you get everything you want.

This semester we’re holding a food drive where we’re raffling off a Wii. 1 raffle ticket per non-perishable item donated.

Last Spring we worked with the New Britain Mayor’s office on a homelessness initiative aimed at teaching people who frequent the Food Pantries job-related computer skills.

Liberal and Conservative are terms that now carry so much baggage - I don't even like to use them.

I never really though of my self as all that conservative, I just wasn’t in favor of business getting too big and too powerful and the same about government. I wanted to keep taxes and government spending as low as possible while still providing for the general welfare and security of our country. I truly believed that every person had the right and responsibility to do the best works that one could for your family and community without stepping on the rights or rejecting those with whom I disagreed politically as ‘idiots or unpatriotic’. I wasn’t in favor of big unions but recognized their initial right and need to exist. I thought that what I did in my own home was nobody’s business but mine. I thought that good citizens could be black, Hispanic, Jewish, Islamic, Christian, Atheist, lesbian or gay…I may not be a member of any of those groups but I believed that it was an American right for them to be protected and for those who were from them to have equal access to the ‘American Dream’. Really…that’s what a small town, country hick Republican was all about when I was growing up.
No more, not these contentious and bitter days either you toe the Neo-conservative-Evangelical Hate Mongering line or get out…so I got out. I expect its much the same of the other side of the coin for many so called liberals. Except that they’re not asked to toe the line but instead run around like a herd of cats to slaughter.

Power corrupts. Period.

Having said all this..I am still optimistic about the county because those very people who have been on the fringe for so many years – African Americans, Hispanic, Gays and Lesbians are bringing an exciting new energy to this country and although it may be a bloody fight, they will prevail. I believe that my children’s generation have already started a slow but unstoppable wave of change that will reinvigorate the core values of the USA and bring a new era of creativity to business and to society.

And I believe that Santa Will….

liberal wasn't the best term I could have used

but it is the simplest. I like to think of myself as something more complicated than a liberal. But I do have basic expectations are far as social safety nets that neither party seems to want. I want universal single payer health care and Congressman Kucinich is the strongest voice for that. I was hoping the “public option” would be a stepping stone, but it is gone. We are going to get a health bill (if we get one at all) that will just add a few new band aids. Yeah it will be nice to have health insurance under my parents plan until I’m 26, but the plan won’t really help people that much. We have a health care crisis that won’t be solved by mild reforms.

As a student if I couldn’t be on my parents plan I would probably buy the public option. My university plan through a private company is scary terrible. It doesn’t cover dr’s visits, there is no dental, it only covers about 70% of hospitalization, no eye care, and hardly any prescriptions, even relatively common ’srcipts with generics.

I am terrified as to what would happen on the off chance I would get really sick. I’m not planning on it but on the off chance I came down with cancer, I would be in terrible debt for the rest of my life, because if I am too sick for school my insurance will run out in August, and no private carrier would pick me up. That is why we need a public option.

We need more affordable secondary education. I went to a private undergraduate school, but the scholarship they gave me made it only slightly more expensive than a 4 year public school in Ohio. Our system discourages and prevents poor people from going to school. Who is going to cosign their loans? It also discourages people from seeking higher degrees. One of my roommates is over $200 grand in debt and still has a few more years until he gets his ph.d. That is with assistant ships and other sources of funding. When you get a ph.d in a field such as history you already take a big risk in that the job market is very small. It is a double whammy in that you may also have a large debt you can’t pay back. I am guessing a lot of talented people don’t get graduate degrees simply because they don’t want the risk of the debt.

We have nothing to care for the sick and the insane. Crazy people who are incapable of taking care of themselves wonder the streets and are homeless. That is a huge indictment on our government. We, the richest country in the world, don’t even take care of people who can’t take care of themselves.

I’ve lost a lot of optimism. I see my peers, most don’t give a shit. We are complacent and accept what happens around us as status quo. My generation stopped paying attention after election day. Your generation had the best chance to change America, and swung and missed in November of 1968.

Actually I did not vote for Goldwater

I was conflicted because of his social views . The Great society of LBJ’s legacy appealed to me more than Goldwater’s seemingly reactionary stance regarding the social ills of time – Segregation, Poverty and Science and Math Education and Vietnam were the issues of the day.. In retrospect Barry seems downright moderate compared to the idiots who are in the forefront of the Republican party now.

I did like the independent side of Goldwater which surfaced more and more as he aged. He had no use for the Evangelical Politicians and was firm that if a gay or lesbian person paid their taxes, worked hard, served in the military and minded their own business then no one should bother them. What people chose to do in the privacy of their own homes was nobody’s fucking business but their own.

I am still bit idealistic, as you point out Farney..But I became so disgusted by today’s daily political hubub that I could take a big hairy shit on the steps of the Capitol building as memento of all the time and energy I once put into trying to find political solutions to the ills of our country. Now I use that time and energy for for a higher calling - Red Reporter.

Well I don't think it is a secret that Palin isn't very well educated.

And that her thinking skills are not very well developed.
Or that she has much of a grasp on the bigger more complex issues like international diplomacy or the economy
Or that she is capable of leading the country in the present crisis mode it is in..
Or that ultimately that she is all that bright.
I was being charitable and passing along a comment from a very well educated liberal who had a couple of nice things to say about S.P.. as governor of a state with only 680K people…compared with about 2.2M in the greater Cincy area.
I don’t think Palin could run the greater Cincy area as she would have to deal with a wide diversity of people with various ethnic and educational backgrounds. almost all of which are probably more interesting than Sarah.

implies that the problem is in the future. Nobody sees the icebergs up ahead, so it’s still party time.

And no one is really to blame; you can’t expect the Titanic to turn on a dime, no matter who is at the helm.

I’ve seen the US governmental structure compared to an ocean liner: it was designed for stability, and therefore cannot react quickly. Our founding fathers wanted it that way. Stability was their main concern.

In contrast, the European parliamentary-type systems are more like speedboats. They can change rapidly, but they less stable.

i love flying

My mom is terrified of flying so I know it is a phobia, but let me tell you this. When I went up with the flight instructor we spent about 10 minutes simply checking the outside of the plane for trouble. Everything from making sure all the bolts were in the plane, to the prop being properly attached, to testing fuel samples to make sure there was nothing wrong with it. That was shortly before a 30 minute flight in a single engine Cessna with two people.

The pilot will spend about 10-15 minutes “walking around” the jet before anyone is allowed to board the aircraft. They have so many redundancies in the pre-departure check list to make sure everything works properly, and it is all in the name of safety. Everybody questions all US airlines customer service, but nobody questions there safety.

I hate airplanes, too

But not because I’m afraid of flying.

I guess it’s more accurate to say I hate airlines. It’s become such an unpleasant hassle. Each time I fly, it seems like the lines are longer, the gate agents and flight attendants are ruder and less helpful, the rules more restrictive, and seats ever smaller.

The last time I flew, the ticket agent refused to check me in, even though there was no one else in line. She pointed me to a machine to do automatic check-in. Which didn’t work. Apparently, they all knew it didn’t work. They just wanted to waste my time.

i’m getting to the airport three hours early and still don’t feel comfortable with that. i got an email from air france today saying the US requires certain info about why i’m going to where i’m going. the state department tells americans not to got there at all.

I can imagine

Getting through customs the last time I went to the UK was a pain, and I don’t have any middle east stamps. Honestly, I lead such a boring life, I’ve never even gotten a parking ticket. But they were extremely suspicious of a female traveling alone, and kept asking me questions about the purpose of my trip. Apparently waiting for me to answer, “I’m going to visit my boyfriend Mohammed.”

stamps are cool and all, but not worth hassle.

My Chinese visa and stamps will always make my smile the most. The week I spent in China was one of the best weeks of my life, and I doubt I will ever take a better trip. A week with some of my closest friends in two great cities. I hope I will have better trips, but I don’t think it is possible.

maybe it’s not the most PC thing to say to an aspiring young mind, but “finding something you’re passionate about as a profession” is just setting yourself up for failure.

me, i love watching baseball. and movies. and sleeping in on weekends with my wife watching terrible shows like “my first home”. i love making my friends laugh and talking to you knuckleheads all day when i should be working.

no one will pay you to do stuff like that. you dont find “sarcastic baseball fan position available: 60k salary + benefits” on Craigslist. i dont love my job. i dont love working. i love the other stuff my job affords me the time and money to do. if you can find that i think you’ll be doing just fine. i know i am.

My advice

Spend the next 5 years figuring out 2 things:
1. What do you like to do?
2. What are your skills?

After that, figure out if there is any overlap between 1 & 2. If not, find out what you can do with 2 that will give you the most opportunities to do 1.

The best advice that any career counselor ever gave me was to never assume that you have to love your actual work or that you have to find work doing what you love. You only have to like your job enough that it doesn’t detract from doing the things that you truly love.

i don't blame the workers though

10-15 years ago they had a nice well paying job with good benefits. Now they don’t. You have to realize all the new fees and policies aren’t good for them either. I went to Tampa last month, and when I checked in for my Northwest/Delta flight home it was a zoo. The checked baggage fees have created a circus. It slows down the whole process.

To add to it, going down there our flight form Detroit to Tampa was delayed 20-30 minutes because there wasn’t enough room for all the carry on bags, so it took a while for people to find space and then we were additionally delayed while they “gate checked” all the bags they didn’t have room for. My bag was gate checked, and it showed up about 20 minutes after my other two bags on the carousel. Thanks Delta for adding an hour onto my travel day.

The problem is airlines don’t have an effective business plan. Southwest made money in 2009 with 2 free bags and no ticket change fees. They were laughed at for turning down their extra revenue in fees, but they stuck to their guns. They have been profitable for 37 consecutive years (even 2001 and 2002 think about that). They have a pretty simple business plan, they have a simplified fleet (all Boeing 737’s,) so they only have to train their crews on aircraft type. They also don’t fly unprofitable routes. They also just work harder than their competition.

Bailey, Chapman, Cueto, Leake, and Volquez; the future is so bright I have to wear sunglasses.

by justin007000 on Jan 25, 2010 12:53 AM EST up reply actions

the other thing is

southwest doesn’t fly regional jets which hemorrhage money. They don’t burn that much less fuel than “mainline” planes, but they seat a lot less people.

RJ’s can leave the airport full and still lose money.

Airlines need to fly more props for short flights and less jets.

the real key to Southwest's success

Is fuel hedges. They bought long-term contracts locking in the price, and made out like bandits when fuel prices spiked.

Coincidentally, that was the same time that my family was going there for an unrelated vacation. With only a few days’ notice, we had to drive to New York City, fly Royal Air Maroc (a smoking flight with no discernible air conditioning) to Casablanca, and then catch a flight to Paris.
