Reds avoid arbitration with Nick Masset
The Reds have signed Nick Masset to a 2-year deal through the 2011 season, avoiding arbitration with the 27-year old right-hander. Terms have not been disclosed as of yet, but we'll update here when they become available.
Masset pitched 76 innings in 74 games last season, posting a 2.37 ERA, striking out 70 batters and walking just 24. He is likely to be the primary right-handed set up man for Dusty Baker this year.
UPDATE: Sheldon has the details:
The deal is worth $2.58 million in guaranteed money. The reliever will get $1.035 million in 2010 and $1.545 million in 2011. There are performance-based incentives as well.

am i the only one worried about Masset?
his season last year was the dictionary-definition of the word outlier. i certainly think Masset > Lincoln, but i fear this deal could end up looking very much the same because im not sure just how much better Masset is.

I like him reasonably well.
He’s got some get-up on the fastball doesn’t he?

As long as he's relieving and not starting
If I remember right, his fastball was around 89-90 as a starter and 94-95 from the ’pen.

do we have money figures yet?
i will reserve judgement until I see what he is making, because I doubt he is making more than $2M a season, so it should be alright.

Still, it's a relatively low-risk deal
Just think that we’re giving him less than half of what we gave Willy Taveras. Even if Masset is a decent RH arm in the bullpen, he’s earning that money on this team. If he keeps up what he did last year, he’s a cheap setup man.

Relievers are always tough to predict
but he did show a lot of progress last year. Per your link, his fastball acquired a bit more giddyup (and since he only started one game in ‘08, it can’t be attributed to switching to relieving). The babip was low but he also got a lot of grounders. This is a great deal for the first two arb years, even if he regresses to a 3ish ERA>
i see a good bit of regression in his future
but at $2.58 mil, he could suffer a ton of regression and still turn out to be worth it. i was afraid of a Lincoln-esque deal, but Walt proved me wrong again. good on ’im.

It sucks that we're this jaded.
I'd take a one legged midget over Shayne Graham in a heartbeat. - btcoop71
i dont think it's jade
relievers are, by nature, extremely volatile. on top of that, Masset pitched last season like he has never pitched before. that being said, $2.58 mil for two years of Masset is better than ok.

Oh how things have changed.
Remmeber when we wanted to kick Masset to the curb to make room for Viola and Roenicke?

i think this is great deal
For $1M and $1.5M, the chance that Masset is really useful is a great gamble.
They say there’s no such thing as a bad 1-year deal. This two-year deal is cheap enough it’s hard for it to be a bad one.

I might as well have just set fire to the $10 I invested in the office playoff pool. First the Bengals last week (I had them going all the way) And now the Saints kicking butt, when I thought they’d wash out early.

Our hosting provider had a major network failure
Sounds like they ran into some serious issues and brought down several major sites, not just all of SB Nation. That’s not going to look good for them.
Red Reporter or follow on Twitter: @redreporter
thanks for the update
They did get things up and running pretty quickly, if it was that serious a problem.
My web site was down for about a week last year, because the building that housed the servers caught fire. It sucked, but what are you going to do? The building caught fire. Could happen to anyone.

I think it’s fair to connect the dots and see Masset as perhaps the hair to the throne room for a closer’s job after Coco gets sent to New York.
