Aroldis Chapman Agrees to Deal with Mysterious NL Team. Could it be the Reds?

Twitter is all abuzz this morning.  Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports broke the story with his tweets:

Cuban LHP Aroldis Chapman agrees to $30M deal with National League team, according to source. Left Ft. Lauderdale airport this a.m. to sign.

Narrowed it down: It's an NL Central team. Cincinnati making more and more sense. Reds "going after him like crazy," team source said.

Lots of others have come out and said that they are hearing that it is the Reds.  If that is so, then Chapman is currently at GABP laying some ink on paper.  We'll update as there are more details and confirmations.  And yes, I'm trying to find something out as best I can...

@JeffPassan confirms the deal:

Confirmed: LHP Aroldis Chapman agrees to five-year, $30 million contract with Cincinnati #Reds.

Damn you, Slyde!

Just when I was about to publish…

Let me write out a formal proof for you.

But fine, I'll add this from my aborted post.

In the latest “news” from mlbtraderumors.com, we have word that it’s not a bunch of other teams—but some people are hearing that the Reds have signed him. So there’s that.

Let me write out a formal proof for you.

Now that I've had a bottle of celebratory champagne...

Realistically, what is his ETA for the big leagues, provided he’s at least 80 to 90% of the hype he’s supposed to be?

Opening day 2011? Fall 2010?

The Reds are rebuilding for 2 years from now.

Post-Harang, Post-Arroyo, Post-Dusty, Post-Cordero, and more importantly (and tragically) post-Slyde.

by Jake Liscow on Jan 10, 2010 2:16 PM EST up reply actions

best-case scenario

webb signs FA deal with cincinnati next season. Leake comes up halfway through 2010 and kicks a little ass. Chapman, who signed with the Reds, turns out to be awesome. Webb, Volquez, Cueto, Leake, Chapman is the rotation, all told costing the Reds about $20 million a year, mostly wrapped up in Webb and Chapman. Homer becomes the closer. and we have all those guys wrapped up for 3-6 more years after this season.

He's a good bat for a pitcher.

Joey Votto / El Nino / Alonso, Yonder are better options for left field. Micah Owings is not the answer

by Jake Liscow on Jan 10, 2010 2:23 PM EST up reply actions

yonder wont even smell a skyline chili

nino will probably just bide time in the minors to take over at 3rd once rolen retires. joey’s staying at first. i dont think its likely that owings would be a long-term solution at left, but i bet he would be good there for now. ann i dont buy this bullshit that he’s a good hitter for a pitcher. he’s just a really good hitter.

Alway the optimist...I like your think kid...

by boobs on Jan 10, 2010 2:26 PM EST up reply actions

What's your evidence?

He drops his foot in the bucket every time he takes a swing and can only hit certain straight pitches in his wheelhouse. His career numbers are good, but limited. Is Yonder getting dealt? What about Heisey or positionless Frazier?

by Jake Liscow on Jan 10, 2010 2:28 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, obviously.

But we know he has solid command of the strike zone and has always been a great contact hitter. We know Micah can hit bombs.

if i cant look at numbers its kind of pointless

but all told he’s put up great numbers as a hitter, and its hasnt been his focus. i think his pitching has overall hurt his ability to focus on his swing, and he’s still putting up good numbers. he was the cleanup hitter at Tulane. he has a career ops+ of 120 and a career ERA+ of 90, so id rather see him get a tryout as a position player rather than toil as a pitcher with no spot on the rotation for him.

Alway the optimist...I like your think kid...

by boobs on Jan 10, 2010 2:34 PM EST up reply actions

There's a lot of value in having a pitcher with his power on the team

I’d like to see him get another shot at the 5th spot in the rotation this year. But even if that doesn’t work, you can use him as a middle releiver/RH PH and essentially save a spot on the roster.

by ken on Jan 10, 2010 2:38 PM EST up reply actions

i agree

because it will be hard to use him as a pinch hitter if the Reds need him in the bullpen.

You save a roster spot

You don’t need to stash an extra RH PH on the bench.

by ken on Jan 10, 2010 2:44 PM EST up reply actions

do you do that anyway?

arent pinch hitters just utility players and backups? if he’s a pinch hitter, then he’s not even a backup. so you’re wasting the spot back

.281 scares me

he really isn’t that much different than Nix, lots of power, struggles to get on base. He is good is small doses, but I’m guessing he would struggle to hit everyday, that being said he is a better hitter than Janish.

But what kind of leash do you give him?

We won’t know if he’s a viable option statistically until we have 2-3 years of ABs to look at. A few problems with this. He won’t stay healthy for 3 years, he’ll probably only get 200 ABs to prove himself, and hopefully someone more viable comes along in that timeframe.

"I expected much better than that".....tHan

by obc2 on Jan 10, 2010 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

I thought they had enough to sneak in this season

Just given the attitude changes, solid draft. When they lost guys like Roy Williams, Antwan Odom, Rey Maualuga, their chances of success quickly deteriorated.

The Coles signing was garbage. But no one thought he would break down as quickly as he has. Ocho is old. Caldwell is a possession guy. Simpson is a bust. Cosby was undrafted for a reason. The offensive line can’t pass block. Carson airmails 50% of his passes. The offense couldn’t carry the D when injuries bit.

by Jake Liscow on Jan 10, 2010 2:34 PM EST up reply actions

i like Cosby as a 3/4 WR

the lack of a TE to stretch the middle of the field was huge negative. the OL did ok, all things considered. If Andre Smith doesnt kick the living shit out of people next season i’m officially on a rant. That kid from BAL was considered a can’t miss well above average OT, but Smith was considered the best run blocking OT in a long time. (per insiders whose opinion i value)

basically, i want some smash mouth football and some WR’s who block!

"I expected much better than that".....tHan

by obc2 on Jan 10, 2010 2:39 PM EST up reply actions

Obviously our running game isn't the problem.

Balance is the problem. No one to throw to is a problem. No pocket is a problem. We can run it for 170 and lose badly – that’s a sign that the offense is not balanced and needs to be fixed.

Holy Crap!

I’ve been in hibernation, trying with everything I have not to think about the Reds, and then they do this out of nowhere! Chapman is definitely talented, but definitely raw, and I hope they don’t stick him in the bullpen too early to justify the cash outlay. Get him working with our Minor League staff, work towards a September call-up, and have him ready for Opening Day 2011.

I think this move, combined with the Rolen restructuring, signals that the Front Office views 2010 as a consolidation year, and 2011 as “The Year.” Take this season to see what we have in Bruce, Bailey and Cueto (and, hopefully, Chapman), add Volquez and Aroldis to the 2011 rotation, use the Harang/Arroyo money to add a bat to supplement your Votto/Bruce/Rolen/Phillips core, and title, here we come! It’s a better plan than this organization has had over the last decade, anyway.

The Reds are, indeed, talking to Cuban left-hander Aroldis Chapman. I’ve got a call into Walt Jocketty but haven’t heard back.

The Reds are close to wrapping the deal up. It could be for as long as 10 years.

10 years???

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

by BubbaFan on Jan 10, 2010 3:16 PM EST up reply actions

That's rather......misleading

If the reported 5 years is correct, they could get 9 years out of Chapman by keeping him in the Minors for 3 years, burning his options, while paying him $6mil./yr. Then, once they call him up, they’d get 6 years of service time: 2 years at $6mil/yr, 1 year at a number of the club’s choosing, and 3 years of arbitration.

So, I guess it could be 9 years, but they’d be paying $18mil for 3 years in the Minors, plus 3 years of arbitration. It would be expensive and counter-productive to do it that way.
