Get Ankiel or Reed Johnson

Lets not platoon our entire outfield this season! They both have great gloves and arms, play hard, have pop in the bat, and can improve at the plate. Throw one of them in LF, put Stubbs in Center, Bruce in RF. I would like to see what kind of impact you guys think they would have in our line-up. I just hope someone steps up big in training camp this year...whose your horse to make the 25 man roster and didnt make the roster last year?

honestly

are they really that much better than dickerson, balentien, or heisey? I mean, when you really think about it, do you come up with them being an improvement? to answer your question, I think they would have a smaller impact offensively (and defensively) than what we’ve got in house, by far I might add. to answer your other question, frazier.

Heisey!

That’s we don’t need Reed Johnson or Rick Ankiel.

No thanks

Johnson is quite old, Ankiel is quite injury prone, and neither has a good bat. Also, where are you getting the idea that either of them has a great glove? Simply isn’t true. In CF at least, both are below average, though Johnson is solid in LF. As sharks said, they’re not better than what we already have on the roster, but they are more expensive.

by kcgard2 on Jan 10, 2010 9:54 AM EST reply actions

well

Johnson is a good fielder, he shouldnt have been in Center, but was the best the Cubs had at the time on defense.

if I hadda choose

I’d take Reed Johnson.
Ankiel is like Roy Hobbs without the upside.
Pass on both. Get Corey Patterson instead.

They both play hard? I'm sold

The Reds DEFINITELY need guys that play hard, since playing hard trumps actual talent. So, let’s not go out and get guys that have talent, let’s just fill a roster with guys that play hard!

*Sigh*

God I love baseball and the Reds, but some of you guys are just dicks.

Oh come on Rey...

Loosen up..RR is kind of like the democratic political party…nobody is really in charge, nobody actually knows whats going on…one week the people who adore you and think you are funny are the same people that next week are agreeing with the Sabremetric wing…but when adversity comes…like the Mongrel Cuns…we all pull together..we love you man…

Sorry Rey

I tune out what people have to say once they mention “play hard”, “play the game the right way”, “hustle”, or some form of scrappy-ness.

Combine that with the fact that I think Ankiel’s lost it, and Reed Johnson is a glorified utility player, and you had me @ hello.

by Highlifeman21 on Jan 11, 2010 8:10 PM EST up reply actions

I'm with you on all accounts

also I’d add that that johnson and ankiels offensive numbers are very unexciting.

I’m not trying to be a dick either though, I just tend to come off that way when I strongly disagree with something.

Its fine

My feelings arent hurt, Ive been given and given out worse on here. I just want to get on here without getting intense as I used to.

I agree on any account that Reed and Rick have more downside than upside, but we are a cheap team, so Id prefer one of them over many of the other schlubs out there. In a perfect world we would get Dye or someone of his caliber for two years while our younger outfielders develop

by Reynard on Jan 11, 2010 11:23 PM EST up reply actions

If we didn't have Nix and Dickerson in reserve I would agree with you.

But if Stubbs or Frazier/Balentien falter we have good back ups, as good as Ankiel or Reed.

How much more did Gomes

want over Nix? What exactly was the reasoning behind signing Nix instead of Gomes?

Well, Nix is signed to a minor league deal, so he's not taking a roster spot and is not guaranteed any real money

Gomes possibly would’ve commanded $2.5-3 million in arb, and I don’t think they wanted to risk that.

by nycredsfan on Jan 12, 2010 9:44 AM EST up reply actions

Nix can actually play defense, whereas Gomes is a corner OF butcher

I’m thinking that factored in the decision, since we’re a defense first team, after all.

And Laynce has a better weirdly spelled first name than Jonny.

for me

its that we have a number of options for LF already for nothing, being a cheap team doesn’t mean anything. if anything we should be looking for an infielder or a pitcher. I would maybe take a shot on a 1 yr deal for ankiel and hope he becomes a good trade chip but thats it, and only because he’d be better than taveras.
