Red Reposter - 9/3/09
-
Drew Stubbs is showing off some of that light-tower power he's always been fabled to possess
hitting 4 dingers so far in his 72 major league PAs. "I was doing the things I was asked to do (in the minors), get on base and score runs and that sort of stuff," said Stubbs. "I hit my share of doubles and for me home runs are icing on the cake. They've always been more of my game than I've shown this year." -
Good news on the injury front
Jay Bruce and Ryan Hanigan will begin rehab stints today. Fay says Bruce should be back with the Reds sometime on the road trip, and Hanigan should be back in the lineup when he is eligible on Sept 9. -
Aaron Harang is again the Reds nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award
He was also nominated in '07. He's a good guy. -
RJ at FanGraphs is just as giddy as you are about Poz's new book "The Machine"
so he's breaking the team down with advanced metrics. He takes a look at the offense today (hint: they were better than this year's vintage). Joe Morgan was consistent. -
The Reds called up Frank Viola to bolster the bullpen
after the rigors of last week. They dont have an off day for something like 2 weeks, so expect Viola to see some action. Dusty says they want to bring more guys up from Louisville, but with the AAA playoffs coming up they dont want to gut the team. Not that that hasnt happened already. -
Will Carroll says the Reds have been reasonably cautious with Johnny Cueto
concerning his return from the DL and the mess he was in before that. I was on the fence about whether or not he should pitch at all again this season, but as long as they keep him on a reasonable pitch count (he threw 85 the other day) I'll be ok with it. -
Tommy Bennett over at Beyond the Boxscore wonders if a grand all-encompassing value stat
is really a good thing for baseball and sabermetrics. Good read.

Frank Viola?
She said, "You don't even buy me presents." Yeah I did. I bought you a box of chicken but I ate it on the way home.

Speaking of tennis...
I’ve been really impressed by the live broadcasts of the US Open available online. It appears to have all courts with live stats, and pretty impressive quality—for free. Too bad baseball could never do anything like that.
Let me write out a formal proof for you.

you know, all around
tennis might be the sport that’s has the best presentation in the US — from production to commentary to resources. It’s a bit easier because the events are fewer, but the difference in overall quality is evident.

Jose Reyes, anyone?
Jayson Stark reports that at least three GMs told him the Mets "have to trade Reyes this winter. Stark says the Mets are looking for a first baseman, a catcher, starting pitching, a corner outfielder and left-handed relief pitching. If Reyes goes, of course, add shortstop to the list.
Reyes makes $9 million in 2010 and $11 million in 2011, with a $500,000 buyout.
So, what would it take to acquire a talented, somewhat injury prone, 26-year-old shortstop with potential to be special?
Starting pitching is available in Arroyo or possibly Harang. Lefty reliever? Arthur Rhodes fits. Catching? Nope. First base. Not happening. Corner outfielder? Not much of a fit there, either. Shortstop, well, Janish?
Interesting to think on, even if it isn’t more than pre-hot stove league talk.

Yes, please.
I’d give them Roenicke and Stewart for him.
Wait…shit.
How about Harang and Yonder for him?

you wouldn't send Alsono
if the Mets give Cincinnati some salary relief?

Absolutely, but I think the Mets
are looking for a MLB-ready 1B. Of course, that’s a system with very few prospects. Alonso could be part of a rather attractive package of players.

Depending on how he finishes in AAA and then in the AFL
He might be considered MLB ready by December

If he does really well in the AFL
He might be ready for the NFL, or at least the CFL.

And you might be a SOB
I wonder if Gomes, Rhodes, and Alonso might be close to enough

the mets would get creamed in the press for that
Whether or not its a fair trade, they’d have to save face. Trading a top-5 fantasy player who EVERYONE knows for an OF who was non-tendered last year, a really old pitcher who was never a household name, and a prospect that most fans have never heard of — that will be a tough sell.
I think you’ll have to put Cordero in a big name deal, because he’s a big name. Not saying it is right or sensible — just that it’s hard to keep your PR good when you don’t get a big name back.
Votto may be a big enough name, but I’d sure rather hold onto him. Coco’s problem is his salary, but that’s matched by Reyes’, so maybe it would work out.

Understand about the big name issue
but if you took my trade and added Cordero I’d feel like we were fleecing the Mets.

now that's the kind of machiavellian thinking we need
I always lose fantasy baseball because I try to come up with FAIR trades, while someone else is out there fleecing the patsy.
