The day the dream died: Reds lose 3-2 to the Astros to secure their ninth straight losing season

The offense disappeared and OUR Reds lost their 82nd game of the year. It's been a nice run over the last week though, let's remember that.

Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Game

Johnny Cueto - Johnny Quest pitched 7.1 innings, giving up 3 runs on six hits. It was the first time he had made it into the 8th inning since way back on May 3rd against the Pirates. An effort that's normally enough to win these days, but Wandy made us his bitch. It happens.

Key Plays

  • Cueto walked the bases loaded in the 3rd and the Astros scored two runs on RBI groundouts by Lance Berkman and Carlos Lee, respectively.
  • Humberto Quintero homered in the 4th to make it 3-0 Houston.
  • The Reds went to work in the 6th, scoring two runs on a single by Johnny Gomes and a single by Ramon Hernandez.
  • Cueto again walked the bases loaded in the 6th but got Quintero to GIHQ, ending the threat and keeping the Reds' hopes alive.
  • Nick Massett bailed Johnny out of a jam in the 8th by getting Edwin Maysonet (who?) to ground into a sweet 1-6-3 double play.
  • The Reds mildly threatened in the 9th when Juan Fransisco walked (mark it down, it happened!) before Laynce Nix GIDP and Kevin Barker grounded out weakly to 2B to end the game.
  • Oh yeah, something cool happened in the Bengals game, or so I hear.

This loss was really deflating

I was checking out Reds.com to read some of the postgame comments, even though I’d rather wait till we have some good highlights to check it out again, and Votto had some interesting things to say:

“Honestly, today is probably one of the tougher days of the year, because we’re officially a losing team,” said Joey Votto, who went 1-for-4. “We’ve been playing well lately, but you can’t help but be embarrassed as a team.”

He followed that up with a similar comment:

“We want to be a winning team,” Votto said. “As a person who gets paid to do what we do, you have to take pride, and it’s embarrassing that we’re losing.”

I understand the embarrasment, but I think they should all, and can, be very proud of the way they’ve played down the stretch. There was only one game, really, where I felt fed up and utterly disappointed in the team. That was the 1 hitter against that young starter for the Padres. I was down there for some of that game and they were not trying. They were just going though the motions. I tried to believe they still wanted to win, but I couldn’t see it.

At least in this past month, it’s pretty obvious these guys still care and want to win. Even when it’s losing, that’s the kind of baseball I would like to see. The team was, sadly, a bit of an embarrasment during that terrible stretch through mid July and August (was the record something like 10-30?), but, thankfully, it has gotten alot better since then.

In any case, it’s encouraging to see that Votto, and I would imagine most of the others on the team, are really motivated to win. I just hope they can put this loss behind them, not let it eat away at them, and play well against the Cards. I don’t want to see another Padres exhibition.

by Red_Poodle on Sep 27, 2009 9:33 PM EDT reply actions

Joey just isn't used to losing yet

he was probably the best player on the best team all of his life until he got to Cincy. Same with Stubbs, Cueto, Bruce, and everyone else. Oh, and Rolen.

"And then there was the USAID guy in Kandahar who drove a giant pink Cadillac, which the locals set on fire one day. If you wanted to destroy something symbolic during a riot, you just could not do better than that. Good stuff." - Ghosts of Alexander

by Cy Schourek on Sep 27, 2009 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I was thinking that, too

Actually, I was thinking of all those bright-eyed, hopeful young Pirates players. They’re so cute before they realize they’re doomed.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

by BubbaFan on Sep 27, 2009 10:20 PM EDT up reply actions

that reminds me

I saw a comment Andrew McCutchen made after the sweep. He said something like it was “getting difficult to smile” because of all the losing. That was really painful to hear!

I hadn’t thought of that angle before, Cy and Bubba. I’m sure most of these young guys are used to being dominant and, for some of the Bats this year, used to winning alot of games.

by Red_Poodle on Sep 28, 2009 12:13 AM EDT up reply actions

I would like to personally blame Dusty Baker for holding 'tryouts' while the opportunity for a winning season was still within the team's grasp.

Drew Stubbs 8 – Good

Paul Janish 6, – so strange SS always in the 2nd slot

Joey Votto 3 – Great

Brandon Phillips 4 – Strong

Jonny Gomes 7, – very strong

Darnell McDonald 9 – 6th/in this game? What was Dusty Thinking?

Ramon Hernandez 2 – Ok, I guess

Adam Rosales 5 – What was Dusty Thinking?

Johnny Cueto 1

Lets sit a strong and hot Jay Bruce
Lets sit Scott Rolen too while we are at it
McFluffy should have been on the bench

Dusty busy with auditions= loss of momentum and empty seats for the last few games of the season.

Jay Bruce will become a major league baseball STAR, starting in April, 2010.....

by Madville on Sep 28, 2009 1:13 AM EDT reply actions

You make some good points

I know Rosales ended up getting some hits, but I don’t think this is the best lineup that could have been put out there

by Red_Poodle on Sep 28, 2009 9:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Not to keep the streak alive

But in the light of day, to be fair, Dusty has been mixing up the lineup through out this streak and it has worked..
dumb luck if you ask me
