Game 153 Thread: Reds at Pirates
Cincinnati Reds at Pittsburgh Pirates, Sep 24, 2009 12:35 PM EDT

The Reds have now won 7 straight games against the Pirates. In fact, the last time the Reds lost to the Pirates was the day before Scott Rolen came off of the disabled list from his concussion, or as it's known in Redsland, The Day the Losing Stopped™. Rolen simply refuses to lose to the Pirates. It's that plain and simple. In his career, he is 74-45 against the Pirates in games that he has started. That's a .622 winning percentage, which is a 100-win season, if you are wondering. Not only are the Reds Scott Rolen's team, but apparently he owns the Pirates as well.
Bronson Arroyo keeps inching closer and closer to that sub-4 ERA. Since he's up over 200 innings, it's going to be harder than it looks, but he's got a chance if he can avoid an implosion in his last 2 starts. If he does that, he might also reach 15 wins for the 2nd straight year. And then we'll never hear the end of it.
Just 10 more games left in the season, and with the way the team has been playing over the last 30 games, I almost feel like we might actually miss them when the season is over. If only they could have won 20 out of every 30 games all year long, maybe we would have enjoyed the season.

Lineup
Taveras 8
Sutton 6
Votto 3
Phillips 4
Rolen 5
Gomes 9
Balentien 7
Hanigan 2
Arroyo 1
Definitely a good argument.
Is it Coachella already?
Cuz that’s a My Wladdy Balentien sighting!

Also a Taveras sighting
/pukes
And after the random shortstop v.2 appearance last night, Dusty grants him his wish and plays Sutton at short (batting second, natch).

I think it's interesting that on a day getaway game Dusty sits the young guys (Janish, Stubbs, Bruce) but plays Rolen and BP, who's probably a bit beat up right now
I'mma let you finish, but....
Well, BP did get hit on the hand or arm with a baseball last night
Nah, let him play. Even though we’re playing Sutton, whose more natural position is second base.
by Brendanukkah on Sep 24, 2009 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions
It is very nonsensical
BP could probably stand at least a few innings off. Janish is not exactly burned out either. I really don’tunderstand the lineup construction sometimes
Or third base, or let Rosie have a start at 3rd, or SOMETHING. If you are leading Taveras off you clearly don't care about winning the game
Plus, why the hell is Bruce not getting starts against righties?
I'mma let you finish, but....
To here knows when, man
It really makes me feel loveless when I look at this lineup. I only said that I wanted to see Wlad playing soon, but not at the expense of Jay Bruce. There’s always a loomer with Dusty Baker. What you want is to come in alone, look him in the eyes and tell him that sometimes you make me want to give up on this team. I think he would be touched. I dunno, I’ve blown a wish that they can figure out how to evaluate talent properly, but it’s going to take honey power to make it happen.

Everybody wants to see Gomes, Bruce, and Wlad all the time.
Someone’s gotta sit.
"If it wasn't this, it'd be something else."
I know Dusty is convinced that Bruce isn't a CF
but I’d much rather have him there than Taveras. Or Nix could play center. Just not Taveras.
Let me write out a formal proof for you.
I really think it is OK to give Stubbs a day of rest
but sitting Bruce – and Hanigan – is un-fo-givable. They need reps badly.

Hanigan is playing today
Or did you just mean generally?
by Brendanukkah on Sep 24, 2009 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions
I mean generally
The fact that he’s playing every fourth day or so right now. It would be one thing if he had been the starter all year and needed a break, but he’s your guy next year and he’s been a back-up, then in a slump, then injured, then kinda in a slump.

I'm not conviced they're convinced he's the guy.
He’s kinda stunk for a large part of the year. When he was splitting time with Ramon, he was much better off. At the very least, he’s gonna need a quality guy to spell him, and I think they’re trying to find out if they have that guy.
"If it wasn't this, it'd be something else."
From Tatum and Corky?
I agree that’s probably what they’re doing, but that’s a SCARY thought.
I'mma let you finish, but....
When he was splitting time with Ramon
he wasn’t playing injured.
Let me write out a formal proof for you.
If anyone is under the delusion that Tatum or Miller
could ever be that quality guy, then we’re in worse shape than we thought. And Hernandez has played at replacement level this year. Aside from the fact that I don’t think they can even afford to bring him back at a reduced price.

Yeah, and the last 30 games, here are the starts for each OFer
Stubbs: 28
CDick: 1
McFlurry: 11
Nix: 4
Gomes: 17
Wlad: 13
Bruce: 4
Obviously there have been lots of injuries, but you can’t tell me McDonald deserves almost as many starts as Wlad. And since Bruce has come back, McDonald has started 4 times, Wlad 2, Bruce 4. That’s just ridiculous

Jay Bruce will become a major league baseball STAR, starting in April, 2010.....
He would make a much better backup than Nix
Walks more, Ks less, and probably has similar power. The only edge Nix has is his defense.

and im not sure Nix's D is noticeably better than Wladdy's
by Charlie Scrabbles on Sep 24, 2009 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions
not for the Reds
i think he played a bit in Seattle, but he’s definitely a corner guy.
Wlad has played 29 games in CF in his career, all last year with Seattle. his UZR/150 in that SSS is -13. his corner D is much better. with 79 games in RF and LF this season, he’s posted a UZR/150 of 14.5. obviously, these are all small samples, so i think we can adequately guess that he’s around +5-10 as a corner guy.
as for Nix, his numbers are better than i thought they were. he’s played 220 games in CF, by far the most at any position, and he’s posted a stellar 14.9 UZR/150 there. but he hasnt played there regularly since ‘05 when he started 61 games there for the Rangers. maybe there is a reason he hasnt played there as much, with all the injuries he’s had since then.
his numbers in the corners arent as good (around +5 or so), but those are in small samples. he’s never really played with any regularity since his 111 games of dynamo defense in CF in ‘04, so it’s much more difficult to peg his D. im gonna guess lower though, as his age and injuries have likely not helped him get better. i’ll say he’s a +5-10 corner guy.
by Charlie Scrabbles on Sep 24, 2009 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes he's been out there a couple 3 times this season
I think he’s had at least one start there and a couple of move overs or late inning replacement opps.
By virture of Nix being a leftty hitter (and more defensive flexibility) he has a leg up on Balentine, unless your left handed power bat off the bench is Kevin Barker…which i don’t see.
Jay Bruce will become a major league baseball STAR, starting in April, 2010.....

My ONLY hope for this, and it's still a lame reason
is that despite their public talking, management knows Bruce has a spot locked up next year and they want to give other guys a chance to audition for LF and the 4-5 OF spots.
I doubt this is the case, as Dusty doesn’t seem interested in thinking about next year, only in playing everyone so no one has their feelings hurt. Even if it is the case that he’s auditioning guys, I would think it’d be more beneficial to get your future RF at bats so he can get more experience for next season.
But hey, Dusty’s the Name Brand manager, not me.
I'mma let you finish, but....
Taveras, Nix and McD
certainly shouldn’t be on the audition list. I think it’s fine to let ‘em play, but like you say – they shouldn’t be standing between Jay Bruce and his self-actualization.

From Dusty's point of view
Taveris and McDonald are the kind of player he desperately wants to break out and come to the fore
From Mads POV – Although I like Laynce Nix he’s mired in a terrible slump and may have lost a golden opportunity for back up job with the Reds in 2010.
What better goal to play for than to win out in 2009
Let the auditions begin in ST.

A lot of it depends on where you live.
In NYC tenants are always favored. It’s virtually impossible to evict someone. The first building I lived in the woman on the top floor hadn’t payed rent in 2 years but the landlord didn’t want to go to the trouble and legal expense of evicting her.
I'mma let you finish, but....
I think the landlord has left the country
I just moved in but there are two completely empty and unlocked apartments in the building and one of the other tenants said that there have been months of mortgage payment bills piling up by the front door. The “office” apparently is only a po box as well. Does that change anything?

Can we just DL him next year from May 15 to the All-Star break?

wooly taveras

I think today’s production ought secure him the CF job for 2010.

At the very least
it ensures that Stubbs is back where he belongs for the rest of the season.

I get so unreasonably, irrationally upset when he does something good. It's really unhealthy
I'mma let you finish, but....
Francisco really wanted to strike out there.
And he succeeded!
Let me write out a formal proof for you.
it is so strange when the t-virus gets on base

So, I thought I had an exam at 6 PM tonight, right? So… I just took this exam during my last class…
What the hell do I have at 6!?

He looks like he needs about 10 lbs on his frame anyway
and he’s good enough for MLB, but I just think he could’ve used more reps. Especially if he’s an outside candidate for SS. He has some pop.
In New England
most would say that he has some soda.

I don't think he's got the glove for it.
Defensively, he’s always projected as a 3B/2B type. He’s got the bat for SS, but I’m not sure the glove is there, at least not for an everyday role.

Coco is now tied with John Franco for the 4th most saves in a season by a Red
And has moved into a tie with Wayne Granger for 8th most saves in a career for a Red. Three more to catch Pedro Borbon!
Did you know that Pedro Borbon has pitched in the most games for the Reds?
I would not have guessed.

Only 4 more wins till we hit dusty's stated goal.
Better than last year.
"If it wasn't this, it'd be something else."
the sad part of this little winning streak is that Dusty is going to get the credit for it.
Itis visibly a case of winning despite dusty, not because of his decisions. i mean just look at today’s line up…Although coco tried to blow again in the 9th…despite his record of saves vs save opps, boy would i like to see them dump him and his salary.
Jay Bruce will become a major league baseball STAR, starting in April, 2010.....
yeah
i’m not real enthusiastic about it. haven’t seen him play much, haven’t heard rave reviews. still, a recruit’s a recruit. maybe he helps bring in brandon knight
What do you mean, "blank slate"?
hey did you guys see Pee Wee Herman on Leno last night?
it was relevant.
by Charlie Scrabbles on Sep 24, 2009 5:51 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes I did.
I’m a big fan of his first movie. My family quotes lines from it often. But I really felt he looked old and had lost his magic on Leno.
Opinions vary greatly on pool
I think rivals has him around 27, but scout has him at 50 or so. Everything i’ve read about him says he’s great at getting to the basket, and will be a very good fit for the dribble drive offense.
It’s a good time when we can reel in a top 30 4 star recruit and not be super excited about it.
Made from 100% Recycled Awesome,
I didn't get a chance to catch any of this gme
I was thinking there might be another blowout, but a 4-1 win is fine!
Votto had another fine day, I’m disapppointed he didn’t get 5 hits, but I guess you can’t be that greedy. 6 doubles in 3 games? That is fantastic. What is his slugging percentage against the Pirates now? And Bp is on his way to 100. This stuff is fun.
It is so not classy
