Hal ripped Taveras on his blog
Pinch-hitter Freddie Lewis hit a ball to dead center. As he has done so often this year, center fielder Willy Taveras broke poorly on the ball, running laterally to his left before realizing the ball was over his head. It fell for a double.
He doesn’t get on base. When he does he doesn’t steal when it is needed. He was brought in to be a leadoff hitter and couldn’t do it and is now batting second. And he is below average in the field. What can Taveras do? He has a nice stereo set in the clubhouse that plays loud, headache-inducing salsa music.
And holy cahooties. Taveras just hit a ground ball to the mound and trotted toward first base. Didn’t run. Jogged. Stopped before he got to the bag. Manager Dusty Baker immediately yanked him from the lineup, replacing him with Laynce Nix.
The Reds later announced that Taveras has a strained right quadriceps muscle. I don’t question the injury, but it was awfully convenient
As far as I’m concerned, and many other fans are concerned, Taveras can rot on the bench the rest of the season. I’ve seen nothing to merit the millions the Reds have flushed down the toilet when they brought this guy in.

Strasburg should be on the MLB roster some time next year, Harper is going to take a bit longer, and it’s a lot to pay for a minor leaguer

And I don’t know anything about Harper other than he’s supposed to be the snacks. But if you get a chance to grab frontline talent without having to bid against other clubs, you do it. Especially if you’re in dire need of talent.

Yeah I'm only a masochist as it applies to Cincinnati sports teams
I keep coming back for more abuse. Actually I’m hoping for a really ugly number just because 100 losses tends to stick in people’s minds and help facilitate some changes. It’s the same kind of reasoning that had me hoping the Bengals would go winless last year. I know nothing will change, but darn hope is hard to extinguish.

Anyone catch this gem at the end of Hal's blog post
AND THE Reds and Giants aren’t just competing this week for wins and losses. Insiders say it is down to the Reds and the Giants over who might get outfielder Bill Hall, let go by the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Brewers would like to have Aaron Harang, which would make the salary switch about equal and give both players a new lease on their baseball life.
Harang for Bill Hall straight up? Fuck you if you’re even considering this. He’s had a free fall decline to Alex Gonzalez levels since ‘06, the Brewers are going to have to eat his salary if they don’t trade him and that’s still might not be enough leverage to avoid dealing away a pitcher who is, as it stands, your most reliable starter.

Bill Hall is coming
I’m convinced of it. Looks like it’s just a matter of how stupid they’re going to be. Are they going to send Travis Wood? Why not Johnny Cueto? Sending anyone above a scrub minor leaguer for someone who’s a bench bat and going to be a free agent because no one but the Reds are this interested in trading for him would cement the Reds as the most clueless franchise in baseball.

Go Giants!
Get Bill Hall. For no other reason than to prevent him from being a Red.

The Brewers have virtually no leverage here right?
Hall has sucked for three years running and if they don’t trade him in the next several days they get nothing. If the Giants and Reds are smart – which they aren’t – they would both lowball the Brewers, who should be lucky to get a mid-level prospect or a moticum of cash.

moticum
Sounds like a classic redreporter malapropism.
But I would think getting a million or so would be enough to get him. I think Harang might be done at the same time, but maybe he’s sort of a salary dump as well. I don’t think Harang could be traded any more this year. I wonder if trades can be agreed to and executed after the season.
Bill Hall has sucked offensively for a while, but he’s a really good infielder. He can play SS too.

How about Hall and Hardy?
That for Harang straight up wouldn’t be so terrible, assuming they take on the bagillions of backloaded $$ Harang is owed…

That deal would only be OK if the Brewers took Harang's whole salary AND a bunch of Hall's
Otherwise Hall in that deal brings the value down for the Reds.
I’ll amend my trade idea from earlier
Harang+Taveras for Hall+Hardy+$4 million

Why would the Brewers give us money?
They would be taking on $19M in salary and the Reds would only be taking ~$14M. If anything, the Reds would need to add money to the deal.

and don't you think that Taveras brings the value of the deal down as much as, if not more than Hall?
"It seems like we're not hitting because we're not getting hits." - Dusty being Dusty
Don't you think Harang+Taveras bring more value than Hall+Hardy?
I know Taveras sucks, you know Taveras sucks, but he’s only 27 and super fast. Plus, Harang is the only player in that deal likely to be worth the money next year. He’s already been worth 10 mil this year with 9ish starts left. Taveras -1.8mil. Hall’s been worth $200k, Hardy 6.4mil. So you figure, roughly based on performance thus far, Harang+Taveras will net provide 11mil or so of value this year, Hardy+Hall 6.5 mil, and since the Brewers clearly don’t want either player, their value is really low right now.
For 19m the Brewers probably get about 11-12 mil in value (more if Taveras is used as a 4th OF) and for 14 mil the Reds get about 6.5mil in value. The deficit in value is similar, but since the Brewers two players are unwanted and the Brewers backs are against the wall with Hall, they should have to give up some money as well. 3-4mil seems reasonable.

I think you are oversimplifying
First, you are assuming that Hardy’s true level is what he put up this season. I think it’s more likely around $10-12M, at least. Whatever his value, I think it’s safe to say that he’s probably the only player in the deal that is worth more than he will be paid.
Second, you’re talking theoretical money, when there is real money involved. Regardless of value, I don’t imagine that the Brewers are going to make a deal that costs them an extra $9 million. Wouldn’t they be better off just keeping Hardy and cutting their losses on Hall?
The real problem I see is that I think Harang for Hardy is a legitimate deal straight up (though the Reds might have to help cover at least the rise in cost because Harang is dealt – say $2.5M). I don’t see how it benefits the Brewers to add Bill Hall just to get Willy Taveras and then, by your suggestion, they suddenly have to throw in $4M.
"It seems like we're not hitting because we're not getting hits." - Dusty being Dusty
fair point but
The deal on the table is Harang for Hall, not for Hardy, and if that’s the case I’m demanding something significant in addition to even the deal. If Harang for Hardy is even then the presence of Hall means the trade is tilted towards the Brewers. Maybe just adding Taveras makes it even but I don’t think he has the negative trade value we think he does because other GMs may not hate him with the passion RRs do

What a terribel trade that would be
Hall would have no bearing on the future of this team except to keep steering it over the cliff of continued losing, Harang has returned to a strong level of performance and while ealier I was frustrated enough to call for him to be traded, i was wrong. Hall replaces no one and then who would replace Harang?
Maybe the same guy that replaced Dunn……

Hall for Harang?

Ugh. If this actually happens, we know that yes, the people running this team really are idiots.
I hope Hal is wrong, wrong, wrong about this…
