Game 116 Thread: Nationals at Reds
Washington Nationals at Cincinnati Reds, Aug 15, 2009 7:10 PM EDT

I'm a little nervous about this game today. I have this fear now that every time Johnny Cueto pitches, an injury will happen. Honestly, it's not because of Dusty Baker, but because of just the terrible "luck" the Reds have had with injuries this season. I don't think the 2010 Reds could survive the loss of Cueto and Edinson Volquez. Please Johnny, stay healthy!
J.D. Martin is another Nationals pitcher that didn't make his first start this year until July. That's the third such pitcher in row that the Reds have faced. This is truly one piecemeal pitching staff. What's terrible is that, despite that fact, the Reds were shutout yesterday, and simply carried by the will of Jonny Gomes on Friday. It's ridiculous how bad this offense is. Embarrassing even.
Unfortunately, not a whole lot is going to change in the lineup tonight. Well, we might see a couple of different faces than we saw last night, but somehow, I doubt that the results will be all that different. Hopefully they can just score enough to give themselves a chance to win. What's sad is that was just 3 runs last night, and they didn't come close.

He sums it up perfectly
I think that in microcosm is the Reds problem: They never completely go with a rebuilding mode. Nothing against Nix but I don’t think he’s a long-term solution. I don’t know that Balentien is either. But he looked as good at the plate in the San Francisco series as anyone not named Joey Votto. Why not give him a long trial?
You gotta think it’s frustrating for him to not be able to just say, “Ummmm, what the hell?”

Bah. I think Dusty defends himself well if Nix is the hot bat.
Ride the hot bat against a right-handed pitcher that gives it up to lefties like the prom queen.

Nix,gomes Ballentine and Dickerson are all worthy of playing time
Gomes has been hot, C-Dick has been hitting a bit, so has Nix and so has Wad…hell even Wily has been getting on base…no matter which way he turns Dusty is going to piss someone off.
However it is really a drag that Dusty continues to believe so mightily in Wily…its a shame.

I didn’t know that Baker could speak Wussian
by Cy Schourek on Aug 15, 2009 6:41 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I guess that doesn't sound to idiotic.
Nix has had a hot bat lately. But Dickerson can play center, and I’d rather have Wlad in the lineup than Taveras, even if it means Rosales or Janish hitting 2nd.
Rolen back will be a nice thing for this offense. Then, we could have up to 7 professional bats in the lineup at once (Rolen, Wlad, Gomes, Votto, Phillips, Dickerson, Hanigan) and when Bruce gets back, we’ll have 7.5!

We might win a few games if they let us start 4 OFs
by Geki on Aug 15, 2009 6:26 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions 0 recs
I guess my main frustration with that is
if you are going to go with matchups, clearly Taveras should never play. He can’t hit breaking stuff, fastballs, righties, lefties.
It’s interesting that Baker puts that much thought into lineups, and I actually think that’s kinda cool, but playing Taveras even after all that thought means Dusty is dumber than any of us could have imagined.

I'm guessing he only puts that kind of thought into it for certain players
I bet he thinks Taveras needs to be in there everyday he can to cover CF.

Nyjer Morgan
I guess you could call him a late bloomer. He was drafted in the 33rd round. He was never considered a top prospect. He was 26 when he got his first shot at the show, and I remember everyone saying he was all-glove, no-bat.
But he’s hit better than he ever hit in the minors. This guy even argues that he’s worth as much as Adam Dunn.

The first inning struggles, and Cueto almost abandoning his great changeup for a mediocre slider. I know there’s more that I don’t remember.

Yeah what the hell happened with the changeup?
Why did that happen? I’m curious what his cumulative pitch totals are (and %s for each pitch) when you include winter ball, WBC, spring and this season. His IP seems to be on pace with last year, but I can only suspect they’ve mismanaged him somehow.
Why does everything crumble in their hands. Cueto, Bruce, Homer should not all be floundering like this. Even Volquez looked subpar to start the season.

I think Dusty should have flipped out Piniella-style at the bad calls

were Dusty’s “matchup” stats based on just those 20 IP in the majors?
by RijoSaboCaseyWKRP on Aug 15, 2009 8:47 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
It really seems like Dusty makes decisions, then looks for statistics to justify them

How many of those people get paid millions to do their job well?
Dusty is dumb, plain and simple. He’s dumb for thinking Taveras is/can be a good ballplayer, he’s dumb for not putting guys in a position to suceed, he’s dumb for misusing his pitching staff, he’s dumb for his lineup construction, he’s dumb for not protecting his players.
I’m sure he’s a lovely person with some nice qualities, he’s just a terrible baseball manager

Hi. Christ on a Pogo Stick
I really can’t cannot remember a Reds team this bad. Fucking cast offs, over the hill players, AAA, players and BP and Votto,,,,
Cueto sucking, Volron hurt, Owings nothing to write home about…No Runs for Harang and only the old Druggie getting any wins.
Rolen hurt, Gomes is Gomes , Nix (Love him but he’s never going to meet his once mighty rep), Bruce hurt…Who knows about Wad hell he’s on the bench, Hernanadez wasn’t too bad but Haningan sat on the bench after hitting and hitting and hitting, now he’s semi-hurt, Jannish can’t fucking hit, sutton can’t either, C-Dick looks like he’d be pretty good if just was left in there all the time and then you’ve fucking Wily Tavaris, the worst leadoff hitter in the majors all this supplemented and organized by Dusty Baker…who would be a pretty good high school or college manager but is a horrible match for this team…what’s left of it. Dusty is so rigid and so unimaginative it is unbelievable.
God the I’ve seen the future of last year’s dreams and it is now…
You need a leader, an outfielder that can still play and prolly hit better than half the guys on this team
How about
MOST OF THIS SEASON’S FAILINGS CAN BE BASED MORE ON MISUSE OF TALENT THAN A LACK OF IT.
Thanks Dusty

When I saw Eric Davis in Spring training he looked like he was in the best shape I’ve ever seen him. He’s put on a little weight and I wouldn’t be at all surprised that if he put on a uniform today that within a week he’d be hitting the ball with authority.
