Game 115 Thread: Nationals at Reds
Washington Nationals at Cincinnati Reds, Aug 14, 2009 7:10 PM EDT

|
You know how we always joke about the Nationals getting the Reds cast-offs, the funny thing about that is the Nationals numbers look a lot like the Reds of recent history. They are respectable offensively at 4.52 R/G, just above league average, but they are dead last in runs allowed per game at 5.46, nearly a half-run behind the next closest team. It must be all Adam Dunn's fault.
Don't look now but after losing 14 out of 15 games, the Reds have managed to win 5 of their last 8 and are slowly creeping away from the Pirates in last place. You and I both know that the wins don't really mean much, but it sure does make it a lot easier to follow the team.
I suppose we're still in the stage right now where every time Aaron Harang pitches, it could be his last time with the Reds. I sure hope not as the Reds aren't exactly deep with pitching for 2010. He's looked pretty good his last couple of times out on the mound. Hopefully he'll be able to put a good stretch together to end the season and give us reason to hope for 2010.

Harang makes me feel more and more as though his contract is worth it.
We just need to acquire Dunn in the off-season and we’ll be set for 2010.
Worth it?
Aaron Harang is a career under-.500 pitcher, who has been considerably under-.500 the past two seasons.
Unless you are planning on his being a number four or five starter, then I’m not sure how he is worth it.
Right now, I don’t think the Reds know what he is. The Aaron Harang of 2006 and 2007 who had periods of domination and pitched like a number one (not an ace, but a number one). Or the Aaron Harang of 2008 and 2009 who disappears for thirteen weeks in the middle of the season and pitches like Number Two.

Ok, if you dislike Aaron Harang so much because of his W-L record, how do you feel about Arroyo?
He usually has a better record, does that make him a better pitcher?

It's interesting to look at Harang's neturalized stats for this year
If he pitched for a 2008 NL average team scoring 4.54 runs per game in and playing in a “neutral park” he’d supposedly be 8-8 with a 4.38 WHIP. That’s good enough to be a third starter. For whatever reason, Harang has given up a lot of hits this year, despite his peripherals being good. His .342 BABIP probably means he’s been both unlucky and pretty hittable. In ‘06, one of his two great years, his BABIP was .320. He lead the league in Ks that year, but Harang is still at 8.0 K/9 this year, not a huge drop-off. I can’t completely figure that one out. He’s putting more balls in play this year than in ‘06-’7 and more of them are dropping for hits.
Slyde’s already done a lot of due diligence on Harang this season. Hopefully he’s still here in 2010.
by RijoSaboCaseyWKRP on Aug 14, 2009 6:28 PM EDT up reply actions
I'm not terribly stat savvy
but I remember Bill James writing that pitchers have very much lesscontrol over where the ball goes when it’s put in play than they seem to. Harang has an exceptionally high WHIP this year (1.429) and leads the league in hits given up. So am I right in assuming this has more to do with the defense in-efficiency behind him that Slyde mentioned rather than the fact that Harang is putting more balls in play (since his K/9 is a respectable 8.0)?
by RijoSaboCaseyWKRP on Aug 14, 2009 6:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Crimony I need to check my copy - "much less control"
Just disregard if this all came out as nonsense.

Not to be political...
but did someone say “”http://palinquotes.sillycloud.com/" target="new">this all came out as nonsense"?
I agree with you, Harang is a bit of a fascinating study in pitcher’s luck. He doesn’t have great stuff, but he gets people out. Except when he doesn’t. But when he does, it’s great.
I really don’t understand it, but I find it interesting.
I don't understand it either
He’s just kind of schizophrenic as a pitcher. His line drive rate is high this year (24%). So the balls he’s putting in play are being hit hard and are more likely to drop for hits, hence the high BABIP and high hit totals / WHIP (his walk rate is really good). I guess I’d like to know how much of this is attributable to the defense, but like you say, he’s had good control and been able to pitch away from contract – except when he doesn’t. When he doesn’t, he get hit HARD. It all shakes out to him being an expensive, but essentially irreplaceable member of the rotation.
Are those all fake quotes comprised of real elements?
by RijoSaboCaseyWKRP on Aug 14, 2009 6:48 PM EDT up reply actions
I'd rather have Arroyo.
Because, when it all comes down to it, when you slice the stats up, there are only two stats that really matter.
W. And L. Those are the two they put in every paper, every day, next to every team.
It’s funny how when you have a pitcher who’s ERA isn’t terrible, like Harang’s, but whose WL percentage is abysmal, they try to defend him with other stats. To explain away his incompetence. And while all those stats are certainly important, what it all comes down to is he is not winning. He is not putting his team in a position to win. And he goes on these weeks long stretches where he is not even average.
I would much rather have DiceK with a sky high ERA and an 18-3 record who can’t seem to get any batter out but somehow wins, than a Harang who has a high strikeout rate, who can be dominating at times, but can’t win to save his big white ass.
Does anyone remember what the Phillies staff WHIP was last year, or their BABIP or their home/road splits?
No, you remember they won. Nothing else matters.
Aaron Harang is not a pitcher who can win right now. And contrary to what you think, I actually like the guy. He seems like a great guy, a great teammate, a great citizen.
I think he needs a change of scenery.

The Phillies won on the strength of their offense.
And they had some decent pitching. This argument will quickly be jumped on and torn up by the RR crowd.
Why? Because it's one of the most pig-ignorant examples of "reasoning" that's appeared on this board in long time?

What is the big hang-up with this guy? Yes, his W-L is bad. Fine. But there are others on this team who aren’t doing much better.

at some point,
it becomes:
a) 2+2=4
b) 2+2=Red
I, personally, disagree with you, but I’ve had much more conviction over much less important things. I just think that Harang’s APBA card would look a lot better than Bronson’s
And your Matsuzaka comp is nonsensical.
When Daisuke was 18-3, his ERA was 2.90. When his ERA was “sky high” this year (8.23), he went 1-5 before going on the DL.
The point you may be trying to make is about his 2007 MLB-rookie season, where he neither went 18-3 (his record was 15-12) nor had a sky high ERA (4.40). He also had a lot more run support.
Everybody's a jerk. You. Me. This jerk.
132/38:K/BB is awesome
He’s still #10 in K’s and K/BB. His FIP of 4.08 is certainly respectable.
I still don’t see who the Reds can expect back in a trade that’s going to be better than Harang, unless they bamboozle a team. They need Aaron in 2010.
As I was typing before I accidently clicked another link,
I think Harang has obviously been better than his W-L record and even his ERA belie this year. He’s had rough patches, but he’s been much better of late, and I think he can return to form – especially if he ever gets any run support. The defense behind him has been lackluster compared to our other starters, too.
His velocity seems up lately, and I think that’s helped him a lot. I also don’t think we have anywhere near the depth to give up Harang or Arroyo if we want to win games next year. Their contracts aren’t THAT BAD, given our lack of SP depth.
Cordero’s contract on the other hand is completely unnecessary right now.
I can seem to escape the conclusion that unless they get Hardy
they gotta move BP for next year. Who else would be a good value there next year for this team?

Janish in the two-hole
Wow, maybe he’s finally going to get some playing time.
I figured it would be either Janish or Sutton when I heard Barker was called up. Barker can’t play SS.
Janish is the only real SS left. Sutton played mostly 2B and 3B, and Rosales has played mostly 3B lately. Despite Dusty’s claim that shortstops can play anywhere, and his playing Sutton in the outfield, I don’t think he likes playing people out of position.

FWIW
I ran tonight’s lineup through the calculator at Baseball Musings. Their best lineup:
Votto
Phillips
Janish
Gomes
Rosales
Nix
Taveras
Harang
Tatum
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
it is kind of weird
Their models always put the worst batter 8th. You know, like La Russa.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
His third start of the year: 6 innings, five earned runs, loss.
Fifth start: 5 innings, 5 earned runs, loss.
Eight start: 6.1 innings, 5 earned runs, loss.
Then he started heading south.
6 innings, 5 earned runs, L followed immediately by 5.2 innings, 6 runs, L. Followed by his best outing of the year, an 8 inning, 3-earned run, GC L, then a couple decent NDs in a row.
Then 4.2 innings, five earned, L. Then a couple games where he totaled 9 innings total, 8 earned and a loss (not exactly stellar). Then a game where he pitched well enough to win (3 earned) but lost. Then, back to 6 innings, four earned, L. Then 7 innings, 7 earned, another L.
Sorry, but I don’t see a lot of occassions where his lack of run support is costing him. I see a lot of games where he is burying a poor hitting team early.

Harang is good enough to be at least a 3rd starter on this team
and as such, the return on trading him is highly unlikely to eclipse that value. The evidence is here on this thread – and all over his stat sheet.
Here’s the one-stop shop on Harang scholarship:
http://www.redreporter.com/2009/7/23/960035/thinking-about-aaron-harang
Includes this gem, per Slyde:
Over the last 3 seasons, the Reds are 45-38 in Aaron Harang’s starts, but Harang himself is just 27-33. Comparably, the Reds are 40-48 in Arroyo’s starts since 2007, but Arroyo is 34-35.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
So, unfortunately, I can't stay....

After the Taveras bunt, where he was predictably thrown out by the best defensive third baseman in baseball, I launched into my usual “Willy f*cking Taveras” tirade.
I swear I did not give away the answer to the following question during my tirade.
I asked my wife, “Mrs. BLee (I don’t really call her that), I have a question for you. What do you think is the best thing a leadoff hitter can do? You know, the guy who starts off the game?”
She replied, “I know what a leadoff hitter is. Ummm……get a hit?”
I said, “Yes, that’s a wonderful answer.”
She continued, “He needs to at least get on base. He has to start them off so they can drive in some runs.”
I said, “Honey, you’d be a better manager than Dusty Baker.”
She said, “I doubt it. Why, what does the Reds’ leadoff hitter do?”
I replied, “He has the lowest batting average on the team, and also gets on base less often than anybody else on the team. Dusty thinks a leadoff guy just needs to be fast.”
She said, “That’s stupid. You can’t run if you’re not on base.”
Obviously, there’s a reason I married her.
