Who cares who's coming back?

Let me write out a formal proof for you.

Gotta admit, it never crossed my mind that we'd be getting anything back

I’ll say this for Walt: He’s pretty damn good at moving big, ugly contracts.

by Brendanukkah on Aug 14, 2009 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

what big, ugly contract has he signed since joining the Reds?

He didn't sign those deals, besides taveras, which isn't actually big

he acquired them, and had them greatly reduced based on money change hands and such.

I think we did

plus the Reds removed the $4M in salary owed to Ryan Freel.

So how much of this year's payroll is being paid by other teams' money?

Or money saved from contracts moved? This is getting too convoluted for me to think about / maintain interest in

by jsl413 on Aug 14, 2009 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

if you want to play the semantics game

walt didn’t dump a big ugly contract, either. we still gave boston 1.1 million and only saved the $500K buyout.

by Daedalus on Aug 14, 2009 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions

that looks like fun

Not meaning to argue with you, just pointing out that perhaps the best thing Jocketty has done is not lock the Reds into any long-term money.

We’re paying T Virus 4M next year….

by Highlifeman21 on Aug 16, 2009 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions

He's moved Hairston and Encarnacion and Gonzalez and Weathers

Saving about… 4MM this year? Maybe 5?

Acquired Rolen, who will cost us something unknown because we don’t know how much money we’re getting from Toronto, still. Has not moved Harang or Arroyo’s contracts.. So.. who are you thinking of?

by jsl413 on Aug 14, 2009 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

What was Freel's contract like?

We didn’t save that much money on Griffey or Dunn unless money changed hands that I’m not remembering.

by jsl413 on Aug 14, 2009 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions

He was at $4M for this season, not sure about buyouts

But since he bounced around to 4 teams this year and is now pretty much out of the league, that’s a lot of money to be paying to someone with no value. Walt was able to parlay that into a decent catcher. Even though Hernandez has been hurt, win for us.

Scouting report from SoxProspects.com
Speedy infielder plays 2B, SS, 3B, and all three OF positions. Top notch glove with excellent range. At the plate, Negron gets on base at an okay clip, but the hits just aren’t there enough. He has a good eye at the plate but still hacks on pitches out of the zone on occasion. Exceptionally fast down the line to first, and quick on the basepaths. Negron would be a prototypical leadoff hitter if he could make more contact.

Probably not.

But Boston has a lot of young shortstop depth. They could afford to move Negron.

We Are ... Marshall!

by Thundering Turtle on Aug 14, 2009 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Negron has potential to be a late bloomer.

He heavily concentrated on his defense as a youngster, to the point of neglecting his hitting. He originally went to Cal-Davis, then transferred to Cosumnes River JC, from where Boston selected him in the seventh round of the 2006 draft. He signed for $105,000.

There were doubts if he could stay at SS because of his arm, even though he has excellent range. He is versatile, however, with ability to play SS, 2B, 3B or any OF spot, particularly CF. He takes a line drive approach. Negron has plenty of speed and is intelligent. He is 6-foot, 175 and an above average runnner with good instincts.

Negron generally has a good eye at the plate, but has lapsed into chasing breaking balls out of the zone from time to time. He is a very good base runner and a high-energy guy. He realizes there is more to stealing bases than mere speed. he has strong makeup. Early in his pro career, he drew comparisons to Freddy Sanchez.

We Are ... Marshall!

I also found this funny and apologize if it's been posted elsewhere (via MLBTR):

By placing Austin Kearns on the DL earlier in the month, the Nats missed the chance to shed the $3.4MM remaining on his salary, according to Tom Verducci of SI.com. An unknown team claimed Kearns when the Nats placed him on waivers, so Washington was in a position to shed the remaining $2.4MM on his 2009 contract and avoid the $1MM buyout for next year. However, they placed him on the DL, meaning he could no longer be claimed.

Verducci hears that the $3.4MM won’t be the difference between signing Stephen Strasburg and failing to, but as one source says, saving the money “couldn’t have hurt.”

WTF? From Reds Twitter:

Reds trade Gonzalez and cash to Red Sox for minor league SS Kristopher Negron. Promoted IF Kevin Barker from Louisville.

Honestly man, who gives a fuck about winning right now?

The only other guys they would have called up would have been a waste of options, not MLB ready and exposed before their time, and starting their MLB service time clock before it’s necessary to do so

by jsl413 on Aug 14, 2009 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Generally agree

as far as IF is concerned. Valaika, Cozart etc. aren’t ready. But for Heisey and Stubbs – aren’t they too old to be worrying about the service clock? I was never clear on how much it mattered whether they were called up before September or not.

by RijoSaboCaseyWKRP on Aug 14, 2009 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions

There's just not a strong enough argument not to wait until Sept for those guys.

They’re not going to benefit from riding the bench behind Dusty’s veterans. Might as well save time and money and give them a look in Sept and ST.

by jsl413 on Aug 14, 2009 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm referring more to back when Bruce went down I guess

Assuming a perfect world in which Dusty actually played Heisey or Stubbs, their service clocks and options don’t really matter right? Based on how old they are? I would have liked to have seen them get more of an audition this year, though having Wlad gives them a little depth.

I dunno

Ridding ourselves of any temptation to bring back Alex Gonzalez next year seems like a positive step. Sure, it would have been nice to bring up Valaika, but I guess I can wait two more weeks til September.

Who says Sutton's an answer? Dusty has clearly decided Adam is the winner of the

who backs up Rolen sweepstakes, but all of the sudden Drew Sutton is our pick to click?

It seems almost a random desire to criticize Dusty for anything he does.

The only player on the roster not in that line-up who deserves to be is C-Dick.

by timb116 on Aug 14, 2009 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd like to see Balentien play too

…not that he deserves it but he actually has some potential

by Snake the Jake on Aug 14, 2009 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed there, Jake, but he's not exactly a two hitter

I agree with the fellow who notes the OF should be Dickerson, Balentin, and Gomes. Still sucks, but at least it’s an improvement over Taveras and Nix.

by timb116 on Aug 14, 2009 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I believe people prefer Sutton because he has shown much better OBP in the minors

That and the whole backlash against all the press Rosales has garnered this year for his hustle.

"Even if he is average, I’d still take him over Willyevergetonbase Taveras." - Randy in Chatt on redsminorleagues.com

by RedsMasochist on Aug 14, 2009 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I believe people pick Sutton because there's a reflexive need to bash Dusty

Drew has had two good seasons in the minors and the only reason he’s with the team at present is because he’s on the 40 man and can play multiple positions.

Maybe he can do it, but it’s not like Dusty is stupid for not playing a guy who’s hitting .172 in his 29 Ab’s

by timb116 on Aug 14, 2009 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree - but that's a very limited sample size.

There’s no reason not to try Sutton out – he still has “prospect” potential, and I don’t think Rosales does. Why not give Sutton a tryout and let him play 2-3 games a week at 3B?

by jsl413 on Aug 14, 2009 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions

jsl, I'm not saying Sutton should never see the field, only that the rush to criticize the line-up

is premature. Sutton, Rosales, neither of them is worth a bucket of warm spit in my view.

There are a helluva lot of people in Reds country who are so convinced Dusty is evil, he could turn Nick masset into a decent reliever and change Rhodes from a LOOGY to a fine set-up man and manage to get production out of Johnny Gomes (which hasn’t happened since 2005) and no one would notice. I won’t miss him when he’s gone, but there should be a limit to our “Dusty is a dumbass” stance

by timb116 on Aug 14, 2009 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions

But we agree that Taveras should never be leading off.

And that there is a better option SOMEWHERE for a #2 hitter. And that Balentien, Gomes, and Dickerson is our best outfield right now.

by jsl413 on Aug 14, 2009 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Dusty bashing is a separate issue in my mind

People are bashing Dusty for constantly putting Taveras atop the order and in Center field when there are better options. People wanting to see Sutton play is more a function of wanting to see if he can replicate his numbers from the minors. We have pretty much seen what Rosales can do, Sutton we have not. Sutton has gotten very sporadic playing time, so you really cannot judge him off that .172 average.

I don't mind Rosales, but based on Sutton's minor league career,

I think he could be a .250/.345/.400 guy, which is better than Rosales right now.

by jsl413 on Aug 14, 2009 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Why......

1) Gomes and Balentien continue to not be allowed to play in the same game
2) Dickerson is benched? Child, please.
3) Tatum again? Didn’t Hanigan just have a day off?
4) Nix hitting ahead of Gomes?

by jsl413 on Aug 14, 2009 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Home runs will do that to a man.

I’m shocked Gomes is in the lineup at all! Dusty did us a favor by leaving him in there, even if he is hitting behind failbot Nix

by jsl413 on Aug 14, 2009 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Hanigan actually started hitting again

Dusty had to make sure to put a stop to it, or Hernandez wouldn’t have a spot to come back to. Plus Harang is pitching, the Reds wouldn’t want to acidentally score some runs.
