  • Carolina were off.  They play Birmingham at 7:15.
  • Sarasota lost to Jupiter 4-3Alexander Smit gave up 3 runs in 5 2/3 innings of work, while striking out 8.  Denis Phipps went 2-for-3 with 2 doubles and Jake Kahaulelio went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI.  Up next: The S-Reds take on Jupiter behind Travis Webb at 7:05.
  • Oscar Castro got shelled again as Dayton lost to West Michigan 8-4.  Castro gave up 6 runs in the 2nd to put the Dragons behind for good.  Enrique Rojas and Kevyn Feiner had 2 hits each.  Up next: Mark Serrano takes the hill at 7 against West Michigan.
  • Billings lost to Idaho Falls 6-2Tyler Stovall and Chris McMurray drove in the Mustangs runs.  Up next: The Mustangs take on Idaho Falls at 9:15 behind Ricky Bowen.
  • The GCL Reds scored 6 runs in the 8th inning to beat the GCL Rays 10-9Daryl Thompson started the game on rehab, and it wasn't pretty.  He managed to get two outs in the first, gave up 2 hits and walked 2, and his final tally was 3 runs allowed, 2 of them earned.  Danny Hernandez homered and drove in two runs for the offense, Billy Hamilton was 2-for-4 in the leadoff spot, and Henry Rodriguez and Juan Duran drove in two runs each as well.  Up next: The GCL Reds take on the GCL O's at noon.
  • Roster Moves: Sean Watson joins the Louisville bullpen after Jeff Kennard goes on the DL with an injury.  Jordan Wideman takes over full time catching duties in Sarasota as Devin Mesoraco goes on the shelf for the first time this year.  10th round pick Tucker Barnhart joins the GCL Reds, as does Porfirio Martinez from the DSL team.

thompson only faced 6 batters...

even if he was getting roughed up, isn’t the point of rehab to get your strength back and your pitch count up?

by GrooveLeg on Aug 12, 2009 8:49 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah, it is

But it’s less than encouraging that he’s getting roughed up the same way he was before he went on the shelf, only this time by 18-year-olds.

then let him get roughed up over 4 innings...

maybe they had him on a pitch count… i don’t know.

seems like he should be throwing to more hitters in a rehab start, regardless of how hard they hit him. i’m counting on thompson to prove he wasn’t just a fluke and i hope to see him at AA again by the end of the year…

Thompson's not a fluke

he’s just very injury prone. And the fact that he was included in The Trade meant that he was destined for failure, just like everyone else in the deal.

I doubt that this is his only rehab start

And it’s also possible that he goes back to Louisville and pitches out of the bullpen. Before the third injury, he had two appearances in relief, including the one where he got hurt in.

I'm just guessing

but he probably threw 25-30 pitches to the 6 batters. If they are grooming him to put him in the bullpen, I doubt he was ever expected to throw more pitches than that.

i'm cool with him coming out of the bullpen...

then it’s even weirder that they’re starting him… i don’t know… i’m trying to say anybody’s doing anything wrong, it’s just odd…

nah

It’s common to start a reliever in GCL games, especially on rehab assignments. For one thing, it allows the pitcher to come in with an expectation and in a situation that was fully under their control. In many ways, GCL games are treated like exhibition games where the true rules and strategy of baseball are only secondary.

Sean Watson

Didn’t he used to be on the fast track? Maybe he still is, but I haven’t heard about him lately.

Also, I miss Brandon Waring.

just looked at his numbers

The Orioles have moved him to first base and he’s killing the ball. He’s batting .279/.360/.522 with 32 doubles and 21 HR. He’s a little old to be consider a big prospect at A+, but if he can manage to keep hitting like that, he definitely can play 1B. His defense looks solid there too.

BTW, Justin Turner is batting .311/.368/.410 in Triple-A. He’s not knocking Brian Roberts off of 2B anytime soon, but still hitting well for a 2B.

Just realized that I didn't make it clear that the first person I was talking about was Brandon Waring

Watson was moved from a starter to the bullpen and it appears to have weirdly backfired. Not sure if he was injured and that’s what led to the move, but since moving to the bullpen his walk rate has been terrible (over 6 BB/9). Last year he still had a good K-rate (12.3 K/9), but this year it’s just 7.9 K/9. He isn’t going to go anywhere if he can get his control back.

He's 16, so I doubt it.

There’s only 4 weeks left in the season, so I’d expect him to finish out the season in Billings.

I hope to construct a music video montage of classy St. Louis Cardinal moments, perhaps setting it to Mariah Carey's "Hero."

Please take a moment to find the classiest incidents in recent Cardinal history, and link to an article covering the event, or video or pictures if you can find them.
