In signing Leake. Or so says Sheldon:
Jocketty also told me that the Reds and first round Draft pick, RHP Mike Leake, have drifted apart since he was optimistic last week that his signing could happen. Throwing a wrench into the works was that seventh overall pick, LHP Mike Minor, was signed by the Braves last week with a $2.42 million signing bonus — it was over the slot recommendation.
“That didn’t help us,” Jocketty said. “We’ll keep negotiating and hope we can get it done before the deadline. We are a reasonable amount apart. We’ve moved considerably and they haven’t moved at all. We’re still far apart.”
The deadline to sign draft picks is 12:01 am ET on Aug. 18.
Jocketty is also quoted in this USA Today article:
This is one of many moves expected this month, Cincinnati Reds GM Walt Jocketty says. August roster transactions might not get the same level of attention as those leading to the July 31 trade deadline, but they can be instrumental in a playoff push. The players simply have to clear waivers before being traded.
“There’s a lot of players that will go through waivers because of the economics today,” Jocketty said.
Jocketty was general manager of the St. Louis Cardinals in 2001 when he acquired starter Woody Williams from San Diego for outfielder Ray Lankford in August in what was supposed to be a dumping of salaries. But Williams went 7-1 with a 2.28 ERA, leading the Cardinals to the playoffs.
“We don’t make the playoffs without him,” Jocketty said. “That’s why you never know.”
