Fantasy Futbol?
Are you a soccer fan? Have you been looking for an excuse to follow the English Premier League? (/Bill Simmons'd)
With the seemingly large soccer fan following on this site, I thought it'd be a fun idea to get a fantasy league together for the upcoming EPL season (that starts this coming weekend, August 15th). It's not like a traditional fantasy league, so here's how it works:
- Each team gets £100m.
-
Players are assigned a value (the most expensive player is £12.5m, if I recall correctly).
- You build a team of 11 starters and 4 bench players with the money allowed. You can use a wide variety of formations, but no more than 3 players from any team.
- Players accrue points when they start games, and perform well. The more points you accumulate, the better your ranking.
- Unlimited transfers (roster moves) until the first game is played, then there are 30 for the season.
It's pretty simple. The things that are different than the traditional leagues you might be used to are that each player is available to every team (allowing multiple teams to have the same player), and there's no draft, just a team selection process.
If you want to join, I'm hosting a group on the ESPN Soccernet fantasy game. Click on the link, register, and make your team, and then join the "Red Reporter" league. The password is "redlegs". Happy footballin'!
(P.S. - If you're wondering about the Fantasy Football stuff, we haven't started it yet, but that'll probably still go on as usual. Stay tuned.)

Yeah, it's easy to get confused
Because of that other Fernando Torres that plays in the EPL.

I haven't been able to follow the Premiership for a good two years, so my team
probably makes no damn sense.

I don't know anything a men's soccer...
But Cadavers United is out to win it all.

shit, and he's gonna get expensive after he gets a brace against El Tri*
- this prediction only counts if he starts.
Get him now then!
I’m moving to a 3-4-3 to accommodate him.

Although, I'm not starting him against Chelsea
Stashing him on the bench for now, but he could end up being a great matchup play against weak defenses

I'm still waiting for Tuncay to transfer back to the EPL
by far my favorite player in England, for what are mostly chauvanistic and blindly nationalist reasons. And if he becomes a Villain, all the better.
Here’s Tuncay’s DRH-Shaq moment with Hido Turkoglu

If any of you started Jozy, he didn't play today

You could laugh at mine

I was trying to get a Stoke player on my team for this week
And sure enough, Ryan Shawcross scores 14 today. Oh, and whoever talked me out of Cesc Fabregas because he was supposedly going to Madrid can SUCK IT. He put up 18, but not for me.

Also, anyone object to me posting a weekly update of the league standings?

from 2-5am last night
I ended up doing an EPL fantasy primer. It was worth it to be ahead of Brendan after the first fixtures.
There are, of course, the Sunday games.

... in which you went from last place to first

After one week
1. Alexandria Town (Brendanukkah) – 36
1. Crestwood Crusties (kyleb740) – 36
1. TheGatesofAnfield (Farneyismycopilot) – 36
4. DickersonIsMyCentralDefender (Cy Schourek) – 32
5. Obstinate Know-Nothings (BK) – 31
6. Cadavers United (Madville) – 24
7. 2 Wars 1 Cup (Red Menace) - 19
8. Votto’s Vaunted Victors (ZJiff30) – 15
I’m wondering how Brendan managed to make up so much ground with only 4 teams playing Sunday, and why my captain for the week didn’t get any playing time.

A surprisingly decent article from Bill Simmons about soccer
Simmons went to the USA-Mexico game in Azteca, and came away with a much greater appreciation for the game. I firmly believe that you can’t have a bad time seeing a game in person, and the higher the stakes the better. Clearly, World Cup qualifiers (particularly in a place as imposing as Azteca) are great, but I’ve always been impressed with how a place like RFK Stadium can be bouncing and loud for even a midsummer MLS league match. If you’re curious about soccer, try and go see a game in person. You won’t have a bad time.
