Game 103 Thread: Rockies at Reds

Colorado Rockies at Cincinnati Reds, Aug 1, 2009 7:10 PM EDT

Next Game

Colorado Rockies
@ Cincinnati Reds

Saturday, Aug 1, 2009, 7:10 PM EDT
Great American Ball Park

Ubaldo Jimenez vs Homer Bailey

Mostly clear. Winds blowing from right to left field at 5-15 m.p.h. Game time temperature around 80.

Complete Coverage >

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2009 - Ubaldo Jimenez 7-9 3.85 1.29 120 54

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2009 - Homer Bailey 2-2 6.87 1.53 23 22

Expect to see a lot of heat coming off of the mound this game.  Ubaldo Jimenez fastball averages 95 MPH this season.  Homer Bailey is slightly slower at 94 MPH.  This leaves both pitchers somewhat erratic, but they sure can bring the heat.

Today, Scott Rolen is supposed to start his tenure as Reds savior.  I'm not excited about trading for an injury-prone 34-year old third baseman, but I'm even less excited by the talk of resigning him to stay in Cincinnati beyond 2010.  He's a good player, but as C Trent said on Twitter yesterday, they test for the stuff now that makes players continue to be good past the age of 35.

Not sure if I'll get to see much of this game tonight.  Not sure if I'm all that disappointed about that.

Sorry, baby, but this team hates you...

I am rooting for the Reds to well the rest of the way

For Votto, BP,Bruce, Cueto, Voltron, Bailey, even Hanigan to improve get settled and start winning some games.
I’m hoping that Nix, Gomes, Wadmore and Rolen all take advantage of the PT and that this thing gels..
I’m hoping we don’t trade Bronson
but that we trade Gonzo…i don’t much care one way or the other for Harang (who has seen his best days, but is still effective).
I hope that Dusty has a spiritual awakening and moves to an Ashram in chilicothe and that we find young new manager with a combo of sabremetric understanding, great people skills and a historical understand of the tactics of the game

that’s all i’m rooting for.

Trade deadline winners and losers

from NBC Sports:

Winner:

Edwin Encarnacion – Dusty Baker didn’t appear to be giving up on him, but most everyone else in Cincinnati had. The change of scenery should do him some good, but he needs to take advantage or the bust label could stick.

Losers:

Reds – Scott Rolen is having an All-Star campaign, but I’m not convinced it’s not his last gasp. The Reds will be on the hook for his entire $11.5 million salary next year, and they gave up three nice chips to get him. As long as their odds are for this year, it was the wrong strategy.

I kind of want the Reds to reel off a 10+ game losing streak with Rolen.

Just so Big Bob can learn a lesson. I’m not concerned about draft position – I’ve never been one to root for the team to lose so they can get a higher pick, and never will – but my faith that better days are ahead, that the team is on the right track, has waned throughout the season and was totally shattered yesterday. There’s something rotten in Denmark the front office.

This hurts me more than it hurts you, Bob. But if you don’t learn from this, there’s no hope.

He sits alone...Reds are not home.

I want them to do well too, in 2010

For that to happen Bob needs to realize 2 things ( I kinda think Walt already knows)

1) For “RBI guys” to get rbis, somebodys gotta get on base more often than 29% of the time

2) Dusty is a bad manager

If the team plays over .500 the rest of the year, I don’t think he learns either lesson

by nycredsfan on Aug 1, 2009 6:12 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I have honestly always found the 'paper bag mask' things to be distasteful.

But I really think this is the only way anything will change. Immediate wins or losses be damned – what I really want is to be following the rational, stable organization I thought I was seeing in development the past few years. At least those years there was a sense of expectation that we were on the right path. I’m convinced now that if this doesn’t blow up on them, there is no hope.

I've been trying to figure out what this means, my "leaving the team" if they don't win in 2010

and I think it means that it probably means the end of blogging for me, even to the point of not commenting. Other than that, I might still watch the games if I’m not doing anything else. I might still go to a few games. I’m just not going to think about the Reds for 75% of the day like I do now. I’m starting to feel like it’s not worth it. BTW, I felt this way before this week. I’m not that down on the Rolen trade to the point it would drive me away. It’s not a stupid move, it’s just a poorly executed one. Like I said on Mo’s show, it’s not a deal that a smart team makes.

Rolen says he's thrilled to be a Red

Ex-Jay rolen happy to be close to roots

"I’m thrilled to be here," said the Indiana native. "This is as close to home as I can be. My parents brought me here to watch ballgames, and where I’m from there is a St. Louis, Cincinnati split right down the middle. I’m a Midwestern guy, and I enjoy being here. I certainly enjoyed my time in St. Louis with Walt and I enjoy this part of the country. This is a spot I wanted to get back to and be here for awhile."

Walt would be Walt Jocketty, the Reds general manager.

As for him approaching Toronto general manager J.P. Ricciardi and asking him to see if he might be able to trade him, Rolen said that was true.

"When I was in St. Louis, I was real comfortable in that area," he said. "I have a 4-year-old and a 2-year-old, and my wife and parents travel quite a bit, my brother lives in this area. I’ve always wanted to try and finish up at home or get back to this area, this part of the country.

"I did approach J.P. and asked if he would consider moving me back to this area, to the Midwest. [Cincinnati] certainly would be my number one choice. J.P. approached me at one point and said he would look into it and try to accommodate me. I know he worked real hard, and I know Walt worked hard. I’m very thankful and appreciative for the opportunity to get back to where I’m from, to where my family is."

tigrmetrics? don't think I've ever heard that one yet

on the hotness scale, Rolen has a nice build and he rounds out the infield by providing the attractive older man role. Brandon is the cool, outgoing guy with a great smile and moves, and Votto is the really attractive, understated (unless he’s getting ejected) guy with an air of mystery (he’s foriegn! lol ). Janish is the goofy Screech like one that provides a bit of comedy while being cute. It’s teh cmplete package. Could be a hit series or something (not a world series!)

He’s playing in Nashville. Jason Bourgeois would play before him. Melvin values having competitive minor league teams so there are a lot of quad A and older guys trying to make a comeback.

But on a related note, the guy they tossed off, Tony Gwynn had 3 hits I think and scored 3 runs last night. One of the reasons I got tossed from there was because I dared to say that he wasn’t all that bad.

what I hate about it

is that some people I know are saying things like “that’s not like him” which it isn’t, in general, but when things are this bad (11 lost out of 12!) anyone will get frustrated and come out with some colorful remarks. A couple of fans I chatted with suggested he has been different since his return. The fact that it has happend after his return is a coincidence, I think.

What’s most surprising is probably that I fund some fans left to talk to!

by Red_Poodle on Aug 1, 2009 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I really am now rooting for anything that gets Dusty canned

This team is clearly not going anywhere this season, and if we’re planning on contending next year, which the Rolen acquisition says we are, Dusty absolutely MUST be fired. I’m also willing to bet that that would mean a complete overhaul of the coaching staff, which would be equally welcome. Jacoby and Pole don’t seem to be helping our young talent to develop very much, what with Bruce struggling so much and Homer having to turn to an old college coach to fix his problems. Also, the aggressive style of hitting that Dusty and Jacoby tout REALLY isn’t working, especially when you have guys with terrible on-base skills already batting 1-2.

So basically, however many games must be lost in order to ensure a new manager for next season, I hope we lose them. I don’t want a valiant struggle back to respectability, especially if it is due to some random, out-of-the-blue hot streak from Taveras or Sea Bass, because that just means we’ll lose again next year.

by ThePensive on Aug 2, 2009 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Amen. I hate to blame Dusty tooooo much because the injuries have been devastating.

But I agree that he needs to be gone and if they keep losing, something has to be done. They’re what…1 for 12 right now? That’s pitiful. The last time they strung two victories together was against the DBacks…and that ALMOST didn’t happen.

by chazzilla on Aug 2, 2009 12:25 AM EDT up reply actions

The injuries really have been terrible

We’ve had so many key cogs miss significant time, or potentially be fatigued (a la Cueto this past month). Even still, we were one of the luckiest teams, statistically speaking, the first half of the year, and that’s the only reason we were doing as well as we were. Now that luck seems to have reverted to normal (or even beyond), and we’re seeing what this team (again, injury-depleted) really is, and even when healthy I believe we win despite a lot of Dusty’s decisions.

Taveras has gotten worse and worse as the season’s gone on, and has always in his career had an OBP below league average, and yet Dusty has never batted him below 2nd in the order. He’s taken 3 walks since May 25th, all in July. Dusty’s so by-the-book, and if you have a bunch of kids you probably need to get creative (this is true both inside and outside baseball)

by ThePensive on Aug 2, 2009 1:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Couldn't agree more

I’ve been thinking lately that most of the dumbass moves are down to either Bob or Dusty

1) Bob wanted Dusty

2) Dusty wanted Taveras so Bob told Walt to do whatever it took to get it done, hence the second year for 4(!) mil. Seriously, can you believe he’s going to get that much next year?

3) While Walt wanted Rolen, I think Bob REALLY wanted him and told him to get him at all costs. I think Walt knew he was getting raped but his hands were tied (an unpleasant way to get raped I imagine)

While we are stuck with Bob, if we can drop Dusty that’ll be a major negative influence out of Bobs ear. Unfortunately because of the injury excuse and the money owed him next year, I give a Dusty firing about a 3% chance.

Isn't there a slanket somewhere you should be filling with your farts?

by nycredsfan on Aug 2, 2009 1:05 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

3% sounds about right to me.

I don’t like it, but I’m coming to accept it. They will play the injury card for all it’s worth, and unless Dusty get’s fed up with the incessant losing and decides to retire…well, we’re fucked. Proper fucked.

by DocRam on Aug 2, 2009 10:12 AM EDT up reply actions

Jeez I guess everyone is gone by now..

Drove home listening to Doc What’s his Face…Rogers…yeah
Doesn’t sound like the Boys did too well tonight.
Oh well…on the other hand I still think we’ll see more trade activity in the next couple weeks.
Wouldn’t be surprised to see Weathers and Harang gone if Walt can find a taker.
Shit on a stick this team needs an enima…they are so down…I used to call it a malaise…now I’m afraid its more like a energy loss sickness from losing and losing and losing again.

One of my concerns is that Walt will get trigger happy and trade Gomes and Nix for an aging SS and leave us with Taveris…

Propspects are good to have but prospects are are also suspect….but as Sir Pensive so clearly states the present coaching staff (sans Hatcher and the little Gnome Guy) don’t do well with prospects.

Tomorrow will be a winning day. I am not guessing…trust me it will be a good day to be a Red’s fan.
