Red Reposter - 7/8/09

The Reds and their fans around the world breathed a heavy sigh of relief last night
after beating the Phils in a close one 4-3. "The real hero was Janish, saving (the) bullpen last night," Baker said. "He allowed (the bullpen) to be fresh and sharp in a meaningful situation." Brandon Phillips' unique take: "I’m glad we got the butt-whipping the last two games. It kind of woke us up." -
RJ Anderson at FanGraphs is worried that Johnny Cueto may be hurt
Through the first two months of the season, Cueto was throwing strikes at a 51% rate. In June, that percentage dipped to 42% and through two July starts he's only hitting the zone 40% of the time. His velocity is fine, but he isnt hitting the zone with any regularity. -
At least Dusty Baker seems to be aware of Johnny Cueto's situation
"We were concerned coming in ... he didn’t get the rest (he needed) because of Winter Ball and the WBC," Reds manager Dusty Baker said before Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Phillies. "We’ve really monitored his pitch count." - Hal has some Jayson Stark tidbits about the 22-1 loss. The football note hurts.

"Drawing Pete!" is a new book out now by former Enquirer artist Jerry Dowling
it's full of editorial pictures he drew of Pete Rose and other Big Red Machine players. Looks kinda neat. -
FOXSportsOhio now has a YouTube channel
pretty cool place to check out some of their videos and interviews. -
Ryan Dempster broke his toe and could miss over a month of baseball
and this kid (far right) thinks its hilarious. Gotta love Cubs fans. (HT to Shysterball)

I applaud the young lad.
I also seem to recall Ryan Freel breaking himself on that same length of fence.
He sits alone...Reds are not home.

must have been the 4th of July weekend
The entire league wore red caps, with special logos.
Reds fans may not have noticed, since the Reds wear red caps all the time, but it was quite a shock for fans of the Yankees, A’s, Jays, etc.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
Remember in the Arizona Start
when Cueto had a tight back, and was Wild the first inning before he got stretched out, and was dominant the rest of the game? Maybe he has a back issue. I could see where that may affect control. Since his velocity is good, I worry a little less about his arm, but a back or some sort of hand injury could effect control.

In last night's interview with sMarty, Dusty indicated he thought
Cueto was throwing TOO many strikes and needed to move guys off the plate, i.e. hitters were becoming too comfortable against Johnny. Interesting to note that Dusty’s impression is 100% wrong. I guess that’s why he has Dick Pole
is that the real reason he needs Dick Pole?

Asleep at the wheel?
One of the commenters on another site I frequent observed that Cueto has been falling off to the left of the mound, which he was not doing earlier in the season. He noted that in his experience it’s
[G]enerally caused by the pitcher trying to throw too hard, make the ball spin more, etc. What it does is cause your arm and body to fly open too quickly, which causes the ball to sail on you, high and outside if its a fast ball, and just spin, but not drop, if its a curve or slider. Your pitches get no downward tilt.
Earlier in the season, you would see Cueto constantly remind himself to keep his arm in tight, his fist step toward home, usually just after he threw a pitch. He is not doing that at all now, not for several games.
Makes you wonder whether Pole has noticed or discussed this with Cueto.
Dusty: Hey Dick you notice that Queto’s being falling off the mound at the completion of his delivery"
Dick" Yeah I told him, i said" Hey john you-o isa falling-0 offa de mounda when you a-pitcha"
Dusty" “What?”
Dick"Funny, Skip that’s what he said too"
