Game 80 Thread: Cardinals at Reds

This seems like a pretty even pitching match up today. Chris Carpenter is 5-3 and Bronson Arroyo is 8-7. I know, I know, you're saying that Arroyo is clearly the better pitcher since he has 8 wins compared to Carpenter's 5, but I'm willing to give Carpenter the benefit of the doubt since he was injured. He'd probably have around 8 wins just like Arroyo if he had been healthy.
The Reds REALLY need Goodroyo to be on the mound today. A win today will mean a series win, putting the Reds just one game behind the Cardinals and potentially the Brewers as well. And with Carpenter opposing him on the mound, Arroyo is going to need to be on his game, something he hasn't done much of over his last 4 starts. I'm not confident, but the good news is that Arroyo has a way of mixing in a good start when you least expect it. So, do you least expect it today? Because it would help if you did.
I want a win today more than any game this season. After excellent outings by Homer Bailey on Friday and Micah Owings yesterday, it'd be a shame to waste a shot at winning this important series. If they want to be legit, they eventually have to stop lingering around .500. I say, start today!

Decent?
Wow what is your stats for being good lately.
I am pretty sure hitting almost .400 gets more than a decent score in my book..
Now if only he could do that the rest of the season I will look at his pickup as a good one. Heck if he hits .280 the rest of the way I will consider it a decent pickup. He needs to get more walks though too. Then he can steal more.
So far I have pretty much been on the bandwagon with Taveras. He has stunk up the place for a long time. Had a good start then died, kinda seems to be coming to life again finally though.

I'm not mad at Taveras, I'm just mad at Dusty...
Move him down to 8 when he’s struggling and I have no problem with it. I guess this lineup is fine if Taveras keeps hitting well, but I don’t think he’s a top-half of the order hitter.
You are toying with me Dusty,
Just switch Hairston and Tavares in the order and I’ll go a day without hating you. I mean, if you took Tavares out completely that would be better, but, you know, small steps.

This Wimbledon final between Roddick and Federrer is nuts

I'm not sure if either of these guys will ever break the other at this point.

Way to make him work top 2 in the order
4 pitches, 2 outs.

And Joey strikes out on 6 pitches
2-0 already feels insurmountable.

I've never wanted a rain delay so bad in my life
I think I’d take our pen vs. their pen for 7+ innings, sans Carpenter.
Our gain, their loss.

Good 2nd inning by Arroyo - 1-2-3
Advantage Federer for his first possible break of the game.

wow
he did it. First break of serve for Federer wins it for him.

how many times this has been said about the opposing pitcher this year

yeah but with carpenter it applies with all other teams too

Another 1-2-3 for Arroyo
hopefully he’s settling into a groove.

To put it in perspective
Ryan Hanigan gets a hit every 336 times out every 1000 plate appearances.

I agree with Chris
the Reds should hit and run here.

I'd double suicide squeeze here
send Hanigan home from 2nd on the bunt. If you can’t be aggressive, you’ll lose every time.

CoCo is the Reds lone all star

Yeah, he's basically been pitching competitively since the Dominican Winter League.

ODawg and Sanchez
Sanchez is the lone Pirates All Star.
"It seems like we're not hitting because we're not getting hits." - Dusty being Dusty
Bigger deal that Votto didn't make it, if you ask me
BP only had a mediocre case.
"It seems like we're not hitting because we're not getting hits." - Dusty being Dusty
granted 1B is a much more stacked position
but Votto is the only real All Star on the team. Everybody else is just his teammate.
"It seems like we're not hitting because we're not getting hits." - Dusty being Dusty
I'm not too keen on Howard,
but he’s Charlie Manuel’s boy, and is from St Louis. But he’s had an ugly BA for years, with an equally terrible OBP.
He sits alone...Reds are not home.
Votto missed too much time and has stiff competition
Hudson is living off his rep with toronto. No good uzr’s since 2005.
woba’s almost identical.

hopefully Dusty has some one stirring in the pen
how about that Roenicke fellow? I heard he might be able to pitch a little.

2-0 is insurmountable?
4-0 means I can go work on some chores.

BA?? wtf??
why not field that instead of looking like a middle school girl on the mound?
Hope Springs Eternal!
all star game is a waste of time
and a potential injury for good pitichers
veting now, Brtonson vcan’t help us win games and we can’t hit with runners in scoring position
I knoe it's meaningless
but I still love the pageantry and occassional drama.

They should shut him down for a couple of starts anyway
put him on the 15 day dl until after the All Star Break and see what happens
Hope Springs Eternal!
Maloney...Ramirez...Wood...Lehr
None of these guys excite me for 2009, but I’d rather see every one of them than Arroyo right now.
The thing is, if he sucks right now and he’s hurting, then get the surgery so that he is healthy in 2010. Next year matters too.
"It seems like we're not hitting because we're not getting hits." - Dusty being Dusty
Before I forget
I hate the Cardinals worse than the Brewers this is why I felt we needed to win that one on friday so much. Bronson can’t pitch anymore and we cn;t hit Carpenter. We;re done. It’s all over butfor the crying
lol! a bad typo
I know this isn’t the end of the world but we had this series won
Why hasn’t anyone hit PUjols yet? They tried to kill Jerry Hairston yesterday
when did they try to kill Hairston?
I was at the game and don’t remember that.
Hope Springs Eternal!
I think it was that lumox Dunacn
but he was slid into hard to avoid the double play
I don’t care if we do it too, someone on teh Cards need to be punished
it was a clean slide
Hairston kind of put him self in harm’s way and hung in the air right in front of the bag and took the brunt of the slide
Hope Springs Eternal!
It's not that dramatic of a difference
Hell, Ian Kinsler and Ben Zobrist didn’t make it, and they are the two best 2B right now in the AL.

like, he didn't even run to first?

I wonder if he's particularly frustrated by not making the AS game
I hope this unnecessarily blows up into something. This team really needs some controversy.
/sarcasm.

he just had that look like "WTF"

EdE
doesn’t get it done. Pops up to short right center. He looks really confused
Hope Springs Eternal!
Here is my plan to get the Reds to the All Star break
DL Arroyo
Put EdE in the 8th spot in the order until he gets a little more comfortable
Give Hannigan a little more playing time behind the plate
Sit Taveras
Platoon Gomes/Nix in left with CDick slipping into center
Go with a four man rotation until after the AS break
Hope Springs Eternal!
I know it doesn't matter today
But it still pisses me off that yet again the Reds fail to get the runner in from third with less than 2 outs. It is sickening. I’m not sure if its just incredibly bad luck or if there is a strategy to that situation and the Reds just do not execute it. How can they be so incredibly inept at scoring that runner from third?
The season doesn't start until the Cincinnati Reds take the field! Reclaim The Opener!!
because they are incredibly inept at offense in general
I don’t think there is any particular skill involved in that outside of basic baseball skills.
"It seems like we're not hitting because we're not getting hits." - Dusty being Dusty
FWIW
Going in to today, the Reds were 12th in the NL in the rate of getting the runner home from 3rd with less than 2 outs. The difference between being 12th and 3rd in the NL is 7 more runners scoring for the Reds. So, I don’t think we’re talking about the difference maker on the season. The Phillies are first at 60%, which would be about 15 runs better. It’d be nice if the Reds were that good, but I think every team in the NL thinks that.

When Dick goes to the mound he's really asking the pitcher if he has any loose change.

will somebody explain to me why Jason Marquis made the All Star team over Johnny Cueto?
I first assumed that it was because somebody from the Rockies had to play, but Hawpe is on the team too.
Bloop
He's near the top of the ERA leaderboard
of his own team!
It’s probably the 10 Wins, though.
He sits alone...Reds are not home.
...which makes me wonder what might have been
if Arroyo had somehow managed to have 10 wins right now while maintaining his other outstanding peripherals.
He sits alone...Reds are not home.
Bruce has not been giving any instruction whatsoever at the MLB level
He’s first pitch swinging on a ball out of the zone and nowhere near his sweet spot.
Whoever mentioned the hitch in his swing caused by his left elbow being too high was dead on. He’s popping stuff up and hitting too the warning track balls he should be driving and hitting out.

Somebody ought to email this to the Reds' staff
and probably Bruce himself, if they can find an email address. Because I doubt Jacoby is helping him find this at all.
There's no outward evidence to suggest he's adjusted his approach at
all and I think it’s sapping his confidence at the plate.
