Chris Carpenter vs Bronson Arroyo

Mostly cloudy, rain. Game time temperature around 75.

Complete Coverage >

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2009 - Chris Carpenter 5-3 2.42 0.82 53 10

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2009 - Bronson Arroyo 8-7 5.69 1.52 52 39

This seems like a pretty even pitching match up today.  Chris Carpenter is 5-3 and Bronson Arroyo is 8-7.   I know, I know, you're saying that Arroyo is clearly the better pitcher since he has 8 wins compared to Carpenter's 5, but I'm willing to give Carpenter the benefit of the doubt since he was injured.  He'd probably have around 8 wins just like Arroyo if he had been healthy.

The Reds REALLY need Goodroyo to be on the mound today.  A win today will mean a series win, putting the Reds just one game behind the Cardinals and potentially the Brewers as well.  And with Carpenter opposing him on the mound, Arroyo is going to need to be on his game, something he hasn't done much of over his last 4 starts.  I'm not confident, but the good news is that Arroyo has a way of mixing in a good start when you least expect it.  So, do you least expect it today?  Because it would help if you did.

I want a win today more than any game this season.  After excellent outings by Homer Bailey on Friday and Micah Owings yesterday, it'd be a shame to waste a shot at winning this important series.  If they want to be legit, they eventually have to stop lingering around .500.  I say, start today!

Decent?

Wow what is your stats for being good lately.

I am pretty sure hitting almost .400 gets more than a decent score in my book..
Now if only he could do that the rest of the season I will look at his pickup as a good one. Heck if he hits .280 the rest of the way I will consider it a decent pickup. He needs to get more walks though too. Then he can steal more.

So far I have pretty much been on the bandwagon with Taveras. He has stunk up the place for a long time. Had a good start then died, kinda seems to be coming to life again finally though.

I'm not mad at Taveras, I'm just mad at Dusty...

Move him down to 8 when he’s struggling and I have no problem with it. I guess this lineup is fine if Taveras keeps hitting well, but I don’t think he’s a top-half of the order hitter.

You are toying with me Dusty,

Just switch Hairston and Tavares in the order and I’ll go a day without hating you. I mean, if you took Tavares out completely that would be better, but, you know, small steps.

I know it doesn't matter today

But it still pisses me off that yet again the Reds fail to get the runner in from third with less than 2 outs. It is sickening. I’m not sure if its just incredibly bad luck or if there is a strategy to that situation and the Reds just do not execute it. How can they be so incredibly inept at scoring that runner from third?

The season doesn't start until the Cincinnati Reds take the field! Reclaim The Opener!!

FWIW

Going in to today, the Reds were 12th in the NL in the rate of getting the runner home from 3rd with less than 2 outs. The difference between being 12th and 3rd in the NL is 7 more runners scoring for the Reds. So, I don’t think we’re talking about the difference maker on the season. The Phillies are first at 60%, which would be about 15 runs better. It’d be nice if the Reds were that good, but I think every team in the NL thinks that.

He’s first pitch swinging on a ball out of the zone and nowhere near his sweet spot.

Whoever mentioned the hitch in his swing caused by his left elbow being too high was dead on. He’s popping stuff up and hitting too the warning track balls he should be driving and hitting out.
