Game 79 Thread: Cardinals at Reds

St. Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds, Jul 4, 2009 1:10 PM EDT

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2009 - Brad Thompson 2-4 4.69 1.27 15 12

W-L ERA WHIP K BB
2009 - Micah Owings 5-8 4.63 1.55 50 42

Last night was a tough loss, making it especially hard to come back and play a day game today.  Once again, I really wish Johnny Cueto or Aaron Harang were pitching this series.

That's not to say that Micah Owings is a bad pitcher, but his inconsistency can be dangerous against a team like the Cardinals, who have a way of making mistakes turn into runs quickly (right, Albert?).  Once again, the Reds really need a big start from their pitcher.  I guess that's what it's like living with an anemic offense.

The last time the Reds faced Brad Thompson, he threw 5 innings, allowing just 5 hits and 2 runs in a Cardinals 5-2 win.  It was Thompson's first start of the season, a role that he's held down since then, posting a 4.86 ERA over 6 starts.  As you can see, he doesn't strike out many, but he also doesn't walk many either.  That means we should see a lot of balls put in play today.  Hopefully they're falling in for the Reds.

Enjoy a safe and fun 4th today, everybody!  I don't want to hear any stories about your trip to the emergency room this evening.

It’s getting better. Good to see EdE in the lineup. I hope he’s healthy. His swing sure looked good last night. Hopefully having a bat behind Bruce will take some pressure off of him.

i got kinda pissed off last night when EdE came into the game

and all you could hear was crickets. i was really excited to see him back, and i was hooting and hollering at my tv. but that sold-out stadium couldnt give a care if he was back or not. jerks.

I'm curious as to why he didn't start.

Judging by his swing, I guess he was a bit rusty still.

by DocRam on Jul 4, 2009 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions

i think it had more to do with the fact

that he played a double-header the day before and then packed up and headed to Cincy yesterday. probably not the most convincing reason in the world, but whatevs.

really?

I thought his swing looked a lot better than I expected it to. He crushed that double in the 9th.

Hanigan is pretty damn good. Solid #2 hitter and great arm.

The easy answer is 'No' for me...

but we aren’t going to get much in return. He’s supposedly a ‘good locker room guy’, and is a serviceable catcher. But, I think Hanny needs more ABs. With Raymoan in the fold this year, and Dusty at the helm…I don’t see him playing regularly.

I didn't realize Bruce was the 6th youngest player in the league.

I’m not saying he shouldn’t still be the presumptive RF, but his performance over this season makes me nervous. His power and arm make up for his low-OBP, but there’s no indication yet that he’s the star we need him to be.

and were bitching last year when he wasn’t called up till may.

He has a gun in RF, is a competent fielder…I have no problem with him playing every day and batting 7. Someday, the kid could be great. He already has the power. Look at it this way; right now he’s Adam Dunn (sans about 8-12 HRs for a season) but a MUCH better fielder. And a much higher upside.

that's what I hated about working food service

The restaurant only closed on Christmas. We were even open on Thanksgiving, for a half-day. (And people ordered turkey sandwiches. Are they nuts?)

I always ended up working the holiday shifts because I was a student with no family around. They did give me overtime, though.

i don't mind working the 4th

but it borthers me that i don’t get paid holiday pay, simply because i’m still in my probationary period, especially since by now I have a combined years service time, but at the end of every summer, i quit to go back to school, so my seniority starts over again, meaning i don’t get shitty shifts, and minimum wage.

They have a wide variety, excellent produce, and a good bakery. They are clean and the prices are competative. But as a worker making minimum wage I have some problems with their expectations. Yesterday they were pissy with me for calling of for the 2nd time in the 4 summer’s i worked there, so yeah fuck them.
