I'm OK with the top of this lineup, actually
Might as well let the young guys start, and I’d rather see them leading off than the Virus. Sutton especially, and Rosy to an extent, are still relatively unknown quanitites, and we know Taveras sucks.
I’d like to see Wlad starting and Gonzo sitting though. Play Wlad in left, Sutton at 3rd and if you must, Rosales at short.

More on Peavy (MLBTR):
4:12pm: Peavy’s agent, Barry Axelrod, told Tom Krasovic that his client accepted the deal because there was no guarantee that the Cubs and Dodgers, Peavy’s preferred teams, would have made a move for the righty in the offseason. Axelrod knows Peavy’s contract no longer looks like a bargain, so he says he wasn’t expecting a deal.
“Frankly I am flabbergasted that the White Sox would want to make this deal with him in his physical condition,” Axelrod said.

That’s after I asked him why they gave up Stewart, because he’s a better prospect than Roenicke is.

But it's important that his salary is not in a vacuum.
EdE would have made millions next year, too. It’s the differential in salary that’s more valid. And with cash perhaps coming in from Toronto, that will help further offset this differential…unless that cash comes in Canadian dollars.

Maybe Edwin needed a change of scenery, but Roenicke has the best stuff in that bullpen and Stewart is the best pitching prospect in the organization. That’s too goddamn much for Scott Rolen.

I like Travis Wood, and I’ve been pretty bullish on him most of the season, but I’m beginning to lose a little bit of optimism because of his stuff. Starting pitchers that have fastballs that don’t hit 90 don’t tend to pan out well in the big leagues.
Unless Wood is the next Tom Glavine, I’m not ready to count him as a legit prospect. I need to see something first.

by jsl413 on Jul 31, 2009 5:48 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Between this
and reading that they wanted to keep Rolen past 2010 I have pretty much given up on Walt and management. I was hoping this move could mean getting BP out of the clean up spot because we would have a “veteran bat” for the spot. I was okay with this move as long as Rolen was batting 5th with BP leading off or batting 2nd. (I know he has a bad OBP but a .330 OBP looks great compared to what we have had there for the past 3-5 years.)
Also, the loss of EDE and Roenicke doesnt set the team back at all. The only player we will miss out of these guys is Stewart, because he looks like a legit front end starter and he would have been ready for the bigs next year. However, if the Reds were just going to leave him in the bullpen, then I dont care about him either.

Umm, I doubt this is the final move for the Reds..I’m hoping they are putting themselves in a position to make a run at Crawford or something similar for the lineup. We still need a POWER right handed bat. I’d love to land Hanely Ramirez because I know the Marlins won’t be abel to afford him before long. We’ll need one more pitcher too if we are going to contend with the Cardinals….Bedard is an injury risk, but maybe he’d hold up enough for a season or two here. Well, here’s to 2010….

Ramirez for Alonso.........
Votto has 1st base and they have been dangling Alonso for some time now. My guess is that they will lock Votto up by the middle of next year with a big deal, which I agree they should, which makes no room for Alonso and you all know what a bad idea is to hold on top a prospect for too long. Ramirez wanted out of Florida to begin the season and wanted to stpe in to Barry Larkin (his idol) old spot. It not only makes sense, but it makes the only logical spot for HanRam to come to. The Reds were also talking about him in the Spring due to the fact that he wants to wear his hair a certain way that is not within the Marlins standards. The Reds wouldn’t give a crap if he had the biggest afro as long as he played for the team. So, keep your ears to the ground…should be an interesting off season.

Am I the only one who like this deal? Everyone is talking about Stewart like he’s the next Homer Baily. No one knows what he is going to do. I’d bet on Rolen’s shoulder before Stewarts career.

I would say he's a future Cy Young
But he was the best pitching prospect in this system. That’s not the type of player you throw in to a deal in which you’re already giving up too much to acquire a player you don’t need.

I read your famers only report every day… so you probably know a lot more than I do. But I still want to win in ‘10 and I think Rolen gives us a better chance than Stewart and the other two do. Didn’t Stewart start really low this year? I doubt he could ’08 Volquez us next year, possibly ’08 Cueto.
Anything can happen with pitching prospects, Rolen is more of a better bet.

my two cents
im not thrilled with the trade (roenicke and EE are minor pieces, imho, but stewart was a bad loss) i do think this is kinda like the Reds picking up Gary Vaughn back in the late 90’s.
i dont know if Rolen is a Leader with a capital L but I do think it takes some pressure off Joey V as the “leader of the pack”. He wont be the guy statistically but i do think he brings a measurable veteran presence (sorry, gang) that is sorely lacking currently. Rolen, Bruce, Votto, Phillips, Dick/Gomes is a decent start.
Big hole at SS/CF still.

Gary Vaughn?
Are you talking about Greg Vaughn in ‘99? This is nothing like that. Nothing at all. The Reds weren’t 10 games under .500 and in 5th place when they picked him up. This has got to be a move for next season, and considering we’re paying his entire salary (amongst other things listed previously all over the site), it is a questionable one.

I think this move does help the Reds out in 2010
As long as Rolen doesn’t break down. Replacing Roenicke should be possible in the bullpen too. What concerns me is the salary they’re putting on the books for next year without taking any off, and what happens beyond 2010. Cordero and Rolen are likely gone then, and you don’t have Roenicke to plug into the closer role. Stewart would likely be ready by then too, so that’s another spot you need to replace.
Stewart rocketed through the system this year, starting in High-A Sarasota. He was in the rotation and earned callups to AA and AAA, where he was moved into the bullpen to keep his innings down and has continued to dominate. I doubt he would have been able to come up and dominate right away, but he was the best arm in the system. After him, you have Travis Wood, who is putting up numbers but doesn’t have stuff, Kyle Lotzkar, who still hasn’t pitched this season due to injury, and J.C. Sulbaran behind him. After those guys, that’s it, until Leake or Boxberger signs. That’s my problem with the deal. You’re using the biggest weakness in the farm system right now to acquire someone who doesn’t fill a major need.
Now, if part of this plan is tanking to get Strasburg in the draft, then I rescind my criticism and will start buying playoff tickets.

Wow.
Really. Wow. You guys need to step back from the ledge a bit.
First, if the Jays are paying all of Rolen’s salary this year, that means it’s really only costing about $1M because EdE is still owed about $750K this year. For that $1m, the Reds are getting a major upgrade both offensively and defensively at 3B. Second, while Rolen hasn’t been healthy the past couple of seasons, he has been healthy this year (he’s been in 88 of Toronto’s 102 games).Third , Zach Stewart wouldn’t be considered so highly in any other system; it’s more a testament of the Reds’ minor league pitchers that he’s the best than it is a positive reflection on him.
It isn’t a trade that will make the Reds world series winners; it will make them better this year (which may not mean much to you, but if it means better attendence, that could mean more money to spend) and next, and with a healthy Bruce the Reds become a good SS and decent manager away from being very good next year. I, for one, would be pretty excited about:
Stubbs CF
Phillips 2B
Votto 1B
Rolen 3B
Bruce RF
Gomes LF
Hanigan C
new SS
as an opening day lineup.

I like the Rolen trade
Glad to see EdE get a fresh start elsewhere
Sad to see Cherry go
Would love a new SS – maybe Todd Frazier will make the jump (if he can play MLB SS)
I’d rather keep Nix until a bonified MLB level CF is either developed or traded for
New SS
Phillips 2B
Votto 1B
Rolen 3B
Bruce RF
Gomes LF
Nix CF
Hanigan C
P.
Propspects are suspect. We’ll see what happens new that we have a top MLB 3B in Rolen.
Can we dump Gonzo (and Rosy and Jannish and Sutton etc) and get a decent SS.
I’m not about to give up on BP, Joey, Bruce, Rolen,Bronson, Bailey, RHodes, DRH, even Coco..
Course we could consider moving Micah to LF during the off season and see if he could get his stroke down, he’d be a hell of a hitter.

Your comments about Zach Stewart are way off the mark.
Dude dominated every level and flew through the minors. The fact is, the Blue Jays got a steal, and the Reds should have never thrown him in. Ridiculous. Pathetic trade. Reds got fleeced as usual. Be prepared to see alot of Adam Rosales as Rolen plays about 80 games a year.

The ony real comp I can see
is the Pirates trading Brian Giles to San Diego back in 2003. Pirates received Jason Bay and Oliver Perez (which will almost certainly be more WAR than EE/Roenicke/Stewart project to). The ’03 Padres lost 98 games. The ’04 Padres came in 3rd in the division, but with 87 wins, and then they won the West in ’05 (albeit with 82 wins).
Giles was a huge improvement over Nady, but they also got a big boost from a rookie SS (Khalil Greene) and an insane season from Mark Loretta. That and a vastly improved bullpen was really the difference between those teams.
So I think it’s a reasonable parallel. It hinges, of course, on finding an SS like a young Khalil Greene and having a couple players play off their rockers. In other words: it relies on things you can’t rely on.
I’m very close to giving up on the Reds. But I’ll at least give it another 6 months or so. Or news about Volquez

This trade solidifies that Jocketty is an idiot and Castellini is a bigger idiot.
It’s easy to say I give up on the Reds. I will always be a fan, but they’ve lost my interest for the season and my faith that they can ever contend again under this ownership. They continue to prove they have no clue in terms of personnel and what to pay. Trading for an over the hill third baseman and giving up Zach Stewart, who flew through the minors this year, is pretty much unforgiveable. Plus…….it’s one lousy move that will have ZERO impact on this team. Am I finished? Hardly. But I’ve lost interest. Bring on the Bengals and Bearcats.

Okay, so I calmed down a bit...
but I still can’t get over how this reeks of a certain former GM. We:
(1) Overpaid for an organizational weakness (catcher) because, presumably, Walt thought we needed another catcher at any cost. He somehow managed not to notice that this move made us weaker at two positions—but most importantly, at shortstop. Sigh. More importantly, though, he
(2) Overpaid for a player he liked from his former team, in a way that improves the team slightly in the short term but costs a ton, gets rid of a young player who could still improve for “veteran presence,” and of course does nothing to address the more important holes. And did I mention that he overpaid?
So like that other GM, it seems like he went out with two main goals: find another catcher at any cost, and sign a player he likes for his veteranness at any cost. I guess he accomplished those, but neither really seems to fit into a broader plan.
Let me write out a formal proof for you.

a point i haven't heard raised yet
I don’t follow as closely as I used to, but here’s what I don’t get:
Seeing as how this is a move for 2010, why did the Reds need to pay “full value” (read: overpay) in July rather than lowball (EdE + ? for Rolen) and hope the Jays accept, with the backup plan of acquiring Rolen in December if something better doesn’t fall in their laps in free agency?
What’s the worst that could happen? Well, someone else could pay “full value” to get Rolen. I don’t think that was likely.
Notice that the Reds (well, maybe the Mariners, too) are the only non-contenders to “buy” at the trade deadline? In general, buying at the deadline only makes sense for winners. The Reds are not winners.
by greg456 on Aug 1, 2009 11:18 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
it also sounded like the Reds were the only team pursuing Rolen
yet somehow outbid themselves.

would you believe walt if he said,
“you fans simply have no idea what it takes to run a ballclub so trust me that we’re making the right calls around here,”?
i wouldn’t and that’s the frustrating thing because i’m not a professional on these things. i still know that a small market club should never give up 2 of their best pitching prospects to a team trying to dump salary. if we were 2 games up from the cardinals or even a game or so back, maybe. but when the season is lost you just don’t do this stuff. even i know that.

I wouldn't say that Roenicke is one of our top pitching prospects
but it still blows my mind that he gave up years of cheap pitching from Stewart for this. Thinking about it now, I would have rather seen him give up Alonso than Stewart. And by no means should either have been given away in addition to a young third baseman and a young reliever…
