Friday Trade Deadline Open Thread
In the absense of the Reposter the past few days, these threads have been pretty lively. The Reds havent been so lively, with only one minor move so far, but there have been some pretty big rumors swirling around them. It looks like they may still be in the hunt for Scott Rolen, and they could potentially trade a pitcher or two. My source tells me the Reds are still trying to make a big play for Hanley Ramirez, but the new word is that the Reds are hestitant to take on his salary with no clear position to play him. Alex Gonzalez is deeply entrenched at short, you know.
I personally will be pretty frustrated if they fail to trade David Weathers for the 3rd straight year. Arthur Rhodes seems like a name to watch, and possibly even Aaron Harang, Bronson Arroyo, and Francisco Cordero. Of course, the non-waiver deadline probably wont be much of an obstacle for the Reds, as most of these guys (Rolen, Harang, Arroyo, Cordero) will likely pass waivers if they want to make a move in August. So today will probably be a bit disappointing for those of you looking for sparks to fly.

What if..
..they got Rolen and Hanley?
I have to admit that would get my attention, regardless of how unwise it might be.

Christina Karl from BP thought it was a great trade
Not that Balentin is going to become a star, but taking him away from canyon and placing him in a gazebo, she felt, will turn a lot more of hits in to outs. I get the feeling that he’s a guy who cannot take a slider low and away, but then again, when I was 15 I stopped playing because I couldn’t stop falling down every time I saw a curveball aimed at my head so who I am to throw stones
Nice to see we have a capable outfielder as a transitive result of the Paul O'Neill trade.

I'm with Scrabbles on this one, Weathers and / or Rhodes have got to go.
There’s just no sense in keeping them for this year.
I have robot insurance.

Rhodes would be useful next year maybe.
But as Slyde pwn’d me yesterday, relievers shouldn’t be judged on yearly performances due to low IP. IDK what the hell else to judge them on though :)
Yeah, Weathers is the one I really think needs to be dealt.
Nothing against the guy, it just makes sense. Get something and move on.

I think Weathers is more likely to go in August than now
Same with Arroyo. I see Harang and Cordero as having no shot at getting traded.

Yeah Rhodes at 2 Million
is a bargain IMO. The guy has been rather dominant this year.

"rather dominant"
Kinda like “somewhat conclusive.” :)
But that is a good way to describe a good bullpen pitcher on a losing team.

The question is
do we expect him to be dominant next year. The money is cheap, but all that means is that the Reds could absorb an implosion by him at very little cost. However, right now they may have the opportunity to get better by taking advantage of a team in need and turning Rhodes into a player that could potentially be more valuable to them. It’s not a disaster if Rhodes isn’t traded, especially because we don’t know what is being offered, but the worst thing to do is be overly enamored with the recent performance of a 39-year old reliever who has 70 total innings pitched in the last 3 seasons to the point that you make him untouchable.

Well, the "worst thing" would be to give him a contract extension.
(I should not have even typed that.)

I don't think he should be untouchable, either, don't get me wrong.
But if I had to pick between him and Weathers, I’d rather see Weathers go. It feels like Weathers has been getting lucky for 3 years..
but will he be this dominant next year
or is he pulling a Rheal Cormier? He is old, and the bottom could fall out, especially with the heavy work load he has endured this year. I want him gone.

If you want to project a relief pitcher
look at Ks, BBs, HRs, and BABIP. That will usually give a good idea of whether or not he’s been lucky or good. The problem with the small sample of innings is that it is hard to differentiate between luck and truly good performance.
Another rule of thumb, always use “might” instead of “will” with a reliever. It covers your ass. :)
"It seems like we're not hitting because we're not getting hits." - Dusty being Dusty
yep
defense independent ERA is made up of SO, BB, and HR typically (depending on the formula), so they’re kinda the same thing. The key is to focus first on the things the pitcher can control and monitor how those are doing. If they are dramatically out of line with historical norms, then there might be reason for concern one way or the other.

The thing that irritates me is that no one in the local media will take Dusty to task for this shit. We could use a little more of that
As the Balentin trade makes clear, prospects are not science. Balentin was a fabulous power prospect at one point. the fact that he can’t stop striking out every 3rd AB led to his release.
The Reds should be aggressive about trading prospects they have doubts about for guys that can help. Otherwise, next year the outfield will three guys who were all heavily lauded and there’s a distinct chance all they will be able to do is play defense and K (an OF of Stubbs/Balentin/Bruce).

Cross the threshold, Slyde, and join in me in the “not all prospects will be major leaguers” side! Together, we can construct a winner. You know, like Marge did when she had winning teams and no scouts and terrible drafts. Done properly, we could even maintain a decent farm system……let’s call it the Walt Jocketty/Cardinals philosophy and together we can experience greatness or at least the playoffs led by a pitching staff of Adam Wainwright and three castoffs with no upside. I’ll hold one corner of the Series banner and you can hold the other, while John Sickels grinds his teeth

I don’t get the impression that that is where you are. You seem to be down on prospects pretty much across the board.
"It seems like we're not hitting because we're not getting hits." - Dusty being Dusty
No way.
I would put Drew Stubbs in CF tomorrow just for the defense and OBP skillz. I would sign Jay and Joey to deals locking in their arbitration years. Middle market teams like the Reds have to be built around a young core, which is then supplemented with organizational products and free agents. Surplus at one position allows the GM to flip players to fill weaknesses. In my opinion, second the salary and field operations, the farm system and scouting of any franchise must be Braves/Twins caliber. Identify value, keep it. Trade hype for proven veterans.
Oh, and one last thing. I have watched the minor league system and scouting department produce
Bruce, Cueto, Volquez, Hamilton, EdE, Votto, Phillips, Bray, Burton (and probably another couple that I am missing) in just the last three years and I think that is extraordinary. It’s also a lot to ask, so with the memory of D’Angelo Jimenez and his guaranteed great MLB career fresh in my mind, I say “let’s make some deals.”
I wish our farm system produced all those guys,
but they didn’t. Our minor league teams have nothing to do with Volquez, Hamilton, and Phillips. Everyone but Bruce, Votto, and Cueto had significant time in another team’s system and was drafted/signed elsewhere.
He sits alone...Reds are not home.
Yeah, that would be why I threw in the note about the scouting department
because without scouts you don’t take Hamilton in the Rule 5 draft, you don’t deal a nobody for BP, and you don’t realize that Texas has soured enough on an ace that you can get him for an oft-injured guy with a lot of tools.
That's infuriating....
"If he raced his pregnant wife he'd finish third." --Tommy Lasorda(on catcher Mide Scioscia)
I like this comment from Brent on that post
The 1961 Yankees are a famously good team. They won 109 games, Mantle and Maris took a run at Babe’s HR record. Their 3rd string catcher hit 21 HRs. They hit 240 HRS that year.
And yet, with all that greatness, their regular leadoff hitter was Bobby Richardson, .261/.295/.316. Their regular 2nd place hitter was Tony Kubek, .276/.306/.395.
Sure it would have been weird to have their starting catcher of the day hit 1st or 2nd (Howard had a .387 OBP, Blanchard a .382 OBP), but just think how many more runs they could have scored had Mickey and Roger actually came up with runners on base in front of them.
So yeah, shit like this happens and then it gets entrenched as “the way you play baseball.” And someone mentions later on that the Yanks’ leadoff hitter that year scored 80 runs. With Mantle and Maris hitting behind him. Outliers are infuriating sometimes.

Despite not talking to Cincinnati papers about PEDs, Bronson Arroyo has no problem talking to the Boston Herald about them. Oh yeah, and he casually mentions that he did andro and amphetamines until they were banned.
The only reason Arroyo stopped using andro was because he heard through the grapevine that, because of lax production standards, some andro was laced with known steroids, such as Winstrol.

I understand risk pretty well
and I also said that poorly. I was contesting your claim that failure to take these drugs was a demonstration of a lack of passion for the game.
That’s one explanation, but I think more of it had to do with not valuing the possible gains enough to make them worth the risks. This could have come from understanding the risks better (your example of driving is a good one, since very few people think of it as being as risky as it actually is), or it could come from having different preferences in general.
Let me write out a formal proof for you.
if he didn't take it
he had the risk of never seeing the big leagues. I don’t look down on players for using roids, because I see it as more of a cultural issue, than an individual issue, especially for marginal players. Did Bonds need steroids? No. But I can understand the middle relief pitcher who is use to the shuttle between AAA and the big leagues, wanting to be able to recover a little faster, it might have been the difference between a major league minimum contract, and a AAA contract.

If Walt doesn’t make a deal today then they weren’t offering what he wanted. I thought the Dunn. Griffey, and Freel deals were really brillent. Fewer HR, lower avg/obp/ops, fewer games, fewer PA, worse hitting peripherals suggesting more luck...
Soto was in a better line up with more protection..
etc. etc. etc!
But yes, very similar offensive seasons. I'd argue Joey's was slightly better.
And slightly more impressive.
HR, obp and ops are close enough that they are pretty much identical
(23/24, .364/.368, .868/.874). I wouldn’t even call those different. Fewer games and PA are all a result of Soto being a catcher and thereby adding far more defensive type value.
Everybody's a jerk. You. Me. This jerk.
I'm really just joking.
I was digging for any stat to indicate Votto was better enough offensively to merit it… and I think he was much better offensively, despite the stats that the media actually votes on, but he plays 1B.
On the other hand, the lineup thing rings very true to me, as Soto has struggled this year while Votto has flourished.
Haha, it's cool. I firmly like Joey Votto more than Geovany Soto.
Everybody's a jerk. You. Me. This jerk.
I'm in the tank for Votto
so naturally I’d say he deserved the ROY more, bnut I think an objective case can be made. This year, clealry, he has gotten even better, but hindsight is 20/20.
Thinking about it more
it’s obvious, even when they voted, that Votto would be a central piece for the following year (and even was last year), while the Cubs were loaded with other offensive players. I don’t know if that sort of thing enters into their voting, but I think it should have. In short, I think Votto is far more important to this organizatiuon than Soto is to his. I don’t follow the Cubs that closely, but I think that is fair given how much we already depend on JV.
i dont think ROY really takes things like that into account
it’s really just “who had the best first season?” and the answer is Soto.

The Red Sox piss me off because they're a team that spends a ton and does all the scouting
legwork every team should. They’re having the best of both worlds. The Yankees, too, really. Teams like the Reds on down can only scout and hope their efforts combine all at once to an affordable championship. Bullshit. That’s what it means to “buy a championship”, it’s not that the Sox and Yanks don’t scout and sign great players, they just buy what they need when their prospects fail.

Focus on pitching
yes and wrong. The Reds put together a good staff but forgot about offense. You need a little bit of that too :) I think pitching is paramount, but a lack of run production can sabotage the best of a pitcher. I don’t think many athletes can keep up their performance when they don’t get support. Look at Harang. Let’s go after Rolen and try to bring a balance to this currently woeful team.
So Rolen brings:
(1) veteran presence, and
(2) balance.
Interesting.
Let me write out a formal proof for you.
Good point
I didn’t think about that. But, even if we had the players off DL, would it make a difference? I haven’t done the stats so I don’t know. My gut tells me no. But I could be mistaken. Rolen is hitting 320. And let’s look at this season. There’s still an outside chance we can make a run. I’m tired of “building for the future”.
There is no way this team can make a run.
Absolutely no way. Not only that, but while it’s probably true that Rolen would be an upgrade over Edwin, there are still gaping black holes in the lineup at SS and CF. Trading for Scott Rolen doesn’t help that at all. 3B isn’t a position of weakness for this team, so why focus on it?
"We, as for me all seasons you are affected peculiarly in the edge of my seat and are happy concerning the fact that the Adam Dunn fan has been mixed up exactly." - Reynard-san
you should ask Mo Egger
He seems to think that Edwin is a waste of space.
"It seems like we're not hitting because we're not getting hits." - Dusty being Dusty
That line he had the other day is still bothering the hell out of me
The “if a pitcher fails the eyeball test and has a crappy W-L record, he’s a bad pitcher” garbage. What about when Travis Wood went 0-3 through April with a 0.83 ERA? I need to stop getting worked up over this, but did Lance take over his blog for a day?

Yeah, and after listening to him explain to me why wins, losses, and salary are he needs to know about a pitcher's value
he owes the radio I punched. What a jackass.
“Aaron Harang needs to be traded because he’s 5-12 and makes too munch money!” Outside of the wrong analytical tools, his conclusion is okay, but, if he thinks Harang sucks for the money, why the f*ck would anyone trade anything for him?! A point that remained unaddressed in the “run Aaron out of town” segment.
I turned the channel to Michael Savage, because, strangely, his delusions made more sens than Mo’s
Go Bengals...
I see your point — just hopeful. Then let’s move on to football. And when the Bengals let us down we move to basketball. Holy mackerel, we’ve got a new cycle for the seasons. No sarcasm, meant. It just seems to be the way this town goes with sports. Maybe I should root for the Steelers (forget I said that, I’ve got to go throw up).

I think that's just scapegoating myself
I personally cannot see a world where Joey Votto can’t hit, Coco Cordero can’t throw a fastball, or Alex Gonzalez and Willy Taveras CAN hit and Danny Ray CAN throw a fastball. Garbage in, garbage out. Talent in, talent out.
Short of Dave Duncan, I don’t see how coaching helps 30 year olds. Either they can or they can’t.
I think it almost always helps to have someone who knows what he's talking about
providing another perspective on what you’re doing. It’s not likely to turn mediocre hitters into superstars, but it can help get guys out of slumps or help them identify ways they could improve.
Let me write out a formal proof for you.
Man... the Pirates are nuts
According to Jon Paul Morosi and Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, the Pirates are “probably, but not necessarily,” done dealing. The writers suggest the Bucs will listen on pitchers Paul Maholm, Zach Duke, and Matt Capps, but are not shopping them.

Dodgers & Angels Seek Relievers
Did we talk about this?
Posted: 2009-07-31 16:31:29 UTC
THURSDAY, 5:13pm: Even after adding George Sherrill, the Dodgers are looking to add relievers, according to ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark. They’re interested in adding a right-handed setup man. Teams in conversation with the Dodgers say they have interest in Mark Lowe, David Weathers, Matt Capps, Arthur Rhodes and Jason Frasor.

It was mentioned, I believe
and this follow up from a few minutes ago:
FRIDAY, 11:30am: A deal between the Dodgers and Jays for Frasor is unlikely, according to Jon Paul Morosi and Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
So there’s one of their other options down.
So 3 hours 10 minutes remaining

11:56am: Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle says Cabrera to the Twins is “very close.” Slusser says Valencia is not part of the deal.
11:41am: La Velle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune doesn’t see the Twins as close to a deal for Cabrera. The A’s apparently want third base prospect Danny Valencia. Neal wonders whether the Twins might go after David Eckstein or Kennedy instead
The Rays are looking for arms
12:24pm: ESPN’s Jayson Stark: "The Rays continued to talk with Cleveland about Martinez Friday afternoon, but clubs they’ve spoken with say they’re more focused on “under-the-radar” bullpen arms." San Diego closer Heath Bell is among those names, but the Rays didn’t like the price.

Walt and Rolen is like Dusty and Patterson/Taveras
34 years old, 11 mil contract, injury prone
I hope Edwin starts killing it in Toronto

He'll come.
Walt has almost certainly already greased the skids.

From ESPN Chat:
Michael (Colorado)
Blue Jays trade. Oops, scott Rolen to the Reds. Does this move do anything, really, for either team?
Rob Neyer
(3:42 PM)
Really??? I don’t see how on earth it helps the Reds unless they flip him immediately, and I don’t know if it helps the Jays because I don’t know who they got for Rolen.
David (Chicago)
The Rolen trade clears payroll for the Blue Jays and makes it possible for the Reds to end up 9 games back instead of 10.5
Rob Neyer
(3:44 PM)
Ouch.
you gotta think
it helps us for next year, until one of our prospects is ready

From Fay an hour ago (twitter)
johnfaymanAn hour and 8 minutes to go till the deadline. Looks like the #Reds may do nothing.
He was setting us up for disappointment!
Walt is one dumbass motherfucker
Roenicke and Zach Stewart and Edwin Encarnacion for Scott F. Rolen?
FLEECED.
Sell this team, Bob. Please.

How injury prone is Rolen?
I’m very apprehensive about all this. It’s made the last half hour interesting though
VERY. This is the first season in the last three he's played more than a 120 games (and he hasn't done it yet)
and he's 34!

They have these inventions now...I'm not sure what they call them in New York, but I know they have them in Cincy
they are called “cell phones.”
You can take them pretty much wherever and call people! I know, amazing!
Wish Fay had one.
Phone's ringing, Dude.
He shouldn't have given it up the first night
If peeing your pants is cool, consider me Miles Davis.

I feel like a top prospect must have been involved unless we're cutting salary elsewhere.
Jays weren’t going to take on the money without a top prospect coming back. Talk about selling high.

2:54pm: USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, via Twitter, says the Twins’ talks for Bell are all but dead. However, they’re in on Arizona’s Jon Rauch.
