Game 101, Thread 2: Still Rolen-free
While the Reds are still horrible, we've got a bit of a game on our hands. The Padres lead 2-1, but our offense is showing signs of life. To the hit parade!

Pirates are ready to keep dealing
1:27pm: SI’s Jon Heyman says the Cubs and Pirates are in “serious discussions” about Grabow.
If Alonso for Rolen goes down
Walt will be the one in the bottom of the well
If peeing your pants is cool, consider me Miles Davis.
I don't get it. Trading a guy we can't use for a guy we can and moving EdE to left actually improves the team in the near term
Alonso isn’t going to be a Red until 2011 and where the heck is he gonna play. I’d say moving EdE’s suspect glove to left and playing the oft-injured Rolen is improvement (if Rolen can play 130+ games next year)
If they don't clear any salary
then they won’t likely have enough to compete next year.
Plus, no way Alonso is the only piece in the deal.
"It seems like we're not hitting because we're not getting hits." - Dusty being Dusty
Why must you always disagree with me? (and I say that more with amusement than anything else)
The deal was stated as Alonso for Rolen. I looked over the free agent market (with you and a few other the other day) and I was unimpressed. “freeing up salary” like they did when they traded Griff and Dunn doesn’t inspire them to improve…apparently.
What can I say, the off-season and the goings on this season have shaken my once rock-solid faith in Walt.
the salary they freed up by dumping Griffey and Dunn
mostly went to raises for Cordero, Harang, Arroyo, BP, and EdE. Plus they had 3 big holes in the bullpen to fill. I’m not saying they did a good job, but they didn’t have as much money to spend as people make it sound like.
"It seems like we're not hitting because we're not getting hits." - Dusty being Dusty
I remember five minutes after the trade someone had supplied that point to Fay and Hal and Shledon
Sheldon repeated it in any mailbag he could.
What’s to stop them from saying thing this off-season. Have I mentioned I lost faith in Walt? i would trust Krivsky more at this point. In fact, knowing Wayne, he would have traded have the team for an injured left-fielder, a young left-fielder, Brendan Harris, and a Quad A pitcher! At least there would be movement….
Nothing stops them from saying it
but adding salary now pretty much guarantees them to say it.
"It seems like we're not hitting because we're not getting hits." - Dusty being Dusty

Votto clones have full no-trade clauses.
In an interview with each as I created them, I found that all would reject any trade. Anywhere. Ever.
even to Toronto?
I have a feeling at least 3 of the Vottos would like to play at home with his brothers.
"It seems like we're not hitting because we're not getting hits." - Dusty being Dusty
Well, the first batch (that evaporated) there were a few that noted they'd like to see their brothers.
So far, the current active clones have shown a preference to move the family to Indian Hills.
well they can't have them
plus, those Vottos are made in America and not really Canadian, so the hometown thing isn’t there

Danny Knobler at CBS reports:
The Reds have contined to talk to the Blue Jays about acquiring Scott Rolen, and Bob Elliiott of the Toronto Sun reported today that the trade has “a good chance” of getting done. If it does, sources said that the Blue Jays will receive Edwin Encarnacion in return, in addition to one or more other players. The teams were negotiating on how much of Rolen’s remaining salary (about $4 million for the rest of this year, and $11 million for 2010) the Blue Jays will pick up.
Let me write out a formal proof for you.
Isn't it weird that Riccardi thinks Dunn hates baseball, but he thinks EdE apparently cares?

LOL Roto World
Our View: Alonso is still a developing bat, but a potential trade of him for Scott Rolen appears to make about as little fundamental sense as trading Kyle Drabek for Vernon Wells would. Rolen is 34, due a ton of money the next year and a half and the Reds already have a pretty decent, young third basemen you might have heard of. Stay tuned.
The Giants are the anti-Pirates. Christ (MLBTR):
In a new blog post, SI’s Jon Heyman discusses the Giants’ plans.
The Giants “haven’t ruled out trading for more offense” after getting Freddy Sanchez and Ryan Garko. Heyman says that at some point the Giants scouted Miguel Tejada, Carlos Lee, Josh Willingham, Nick Johnson, Mark Teahen and Marco Scutaro. We can probably cross Johnson off the list. And we’ve seen no sign the Astros would sell.
The Giants would like to add a fifth starter, given the loss of Randy Johnson for at least August. Heyman speculates on a few names such as Bronson Arroyo, Doug Davis, and Jon Garland.

Oh, I had missed this one
1:39pm: A Ken Rosenthal/Jon Paul Morosi source says the Reds-Rolen talks are “going nowhere.” The writers suggest a Halladay trade could help move things along.
Let me write out a formal proof for you.
I looked at their actual blog where they said:
The Reds’ talks with the Blue Jays about third baseman Scott Rolen have failed to progress.
Asked to characterize the negotiations, one source said, “Going nowhere. Stuck. Impasse.”
The impasse could break if the Jays trade Roy Halladay. At that point, they would concede the 2010 season and likely move Rolen and other veterans.
Another source says the chances of Rolen going to the Reds are “50-50,” adding, “Not dead.”
Let me write out a formal proof for you.
Maybe the jays could throw in Halladay too?
I could see him weeping the first time he saw the line-up card and the dimensions of GAB

To be honest, I'd be sad to see him go.

Are the Reds seriously considering trading Alonso for Rolen? If they make that trade, I'm finished as a Reds fan. That would be terrible.

no effin' way, dude.
i believed it for about 2 minutes but i don’t think Walt is that stupid. if you’re trying to dump salary like the Jays, you don’t demand the number 1 prospect in the organization. it’s all a bad rumor.
EE is probably the best bet in getting anything for Rolen, plus an arm. i don’t think Alonso is going anywhere…
I still don't like him.
Trade him.

I didn't see last night's game, but what I will say for this team is that they do not give up
they have no talent, but they keep battling. i like that much
Last night they gave up
Today, they just gave up for the first 8 innings.

Agreed
after Harang gave up those early runs last night, I got the strong impression that the offense gave up
I'm thinking more like AAA+

Talks failing
Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi, of FOXSports.com, report the Cincinnati Reds’ trade talks for Toronto Blue Jays 3B Scott Rolen appear to be failing.
Yes!
Now there’s something we can be excited about!

did he catch up to the runners on base before him?

Or at least the principle that playing younger guys now

agreed
I am getting really aggravated by what I percieve as apathy. If Rosales can do that, some of our other guys should have been able to provide more offense
it might be apathy
but losing always looks like apathy since nobody really enjoys losing.
"It seems like we're not hitting because we're not getting hits." - Dusty being Dusty
that's what I hope it is
If they have actually given up and are just going to swing at the first garabge pitch that is thrown to get back to the bench quicker, it’s disgraceful
I can’t imagine any player would really want to do that, though, because that kills your stats
I'd gladly watch Rosales play his heart out for the rest of '09
now that the season is lost.
If it somehow wins him the 2010 starting job, then I won’t be happy. But this team will be reaping what it sowed.
by RijoSaboCaseyWKRP on Jul 30, 2009 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions
Do you expect a less gag-worthy performance by this team
if he’s not in the lineup? He’s at least entertaining to watch. People in Cincinnati eat it up, so from a marketing standpoint it makes perfect sense. Come see Adam Rosales and the scrappy, never-say-die Reds.

I think my assortment of cliches tells you I would rather watch EdE, Hairston, and....I apuse long before typing this....AGon
than watching Rosales. And reason #547 for that is the one you described: the “average” fans getting attached to him.

I think it makes good business sense to run
Rosales out there for a lost season. He’s like Chris Stynes, only he sucks and Chris Stynes was good for a couple months.
I would rather watch quite literally ANYONE play than A-Gon.

"Sir, can you please put your pants back on?"
I don't think I have any invective-filled rants left in me
I just felt the sting of total apathy hit me. It makes a “boing” sound when it happens. I still like to talk ABOUT this team and its prospective moves, but they could really be a complete simulation at this point.
They’re really running the risk of total alienation of the diehards. I’m not sure who would shell out for season tickets next year unless there’s some big-name acquisition, which would probably mortgage the future of the franchise.
I disapprove of fair-weather fandom – and have always marveled at how Cubs fans can pack it in after 100 without a WS – but there has to be something to keep you hanging on. We don’t have Wrigley/‘lovable losers’ culture, but we also don’t have mgmt that has any inkling on how to build a team with chance of competing – whether with panache or not.

I'm ready to forget this series, but I see where you're coming from
However, if they play like this again, this team is in danger of becoming disliked by me (to put it gently). I can tolerate losing, but not this kind of losing (in other words games we are clealry capable of winning). If we are really this bad, I’d be astonished. Then again, the Padres did sweep us ealier.
Even when we were struggling at times during June, I had the feeling everyone came to play After that Phillies’ series it seems like everything changed.
I paradoxically still love my home team and always will
I just don’t want to be cheated in the effort department. I’m hopeful that I’m wrong, and they come and play hard in the remaining games. I don’t blame them for feeling deflated and beaten when the starting pitching is so weak. However, Bronson pitched a great game and we still couldn’t pull it out.
The effort department extends beyond the playing field
to the coaching staff and upper management. We’ve been cheated by the architects of these teams for nine straight seasons. Although, this level of wilfull ignorance might take quite a bit of effort.
by RijoSaboCaseyWKRP on Jul 30, 2009 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions
No
Krivsky was still GM (I don’t think Walt had even been hired as an advisor at that point). But all signs point to owner Bob Castellini as being the one who wanted Dusty.

If you think Dusty didn't want Taveras, you're insane
I’m also blaming Dusty for retaining the coaching staff. Yes, it’s hard to know what their actual impacts are, but holy moses they are not good.
by Brendanukkah on Jul 30, 2009 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions
seems like a lot of odd stuff
lineups, handling the DL, pitching stuff, that you can’t always say who is deciding what
Yeah
I think with coaching staffs, the only way to confirm their relative impact is when a team is playing poorly. I can’t imagine the Reds playing any worse, so if coaching has any impact at all it has to be in the negative direction. If it has no impact, then it doesn’t matter. Firing the coaches would at least be a much-needed symbolic shake-up that could bouy the team briefly and tell the fans “Hey, I know this shit sucks.”
by RijoSaboCaseyWKRP on Jul 30, 2009 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions
Case in point:
Was there ever a thought by the coaching staff that they might want to manage Cueto’s innings as he enters his sophomore season?

It would be kinda cool to stage a "walk out" at a Reds game
Everyone gets up in the top of the first and leaves, en masse.
I really don’t like hating my team right now though and I don’t want to start reveling in it. RedsMasochist’d.
by RijoSaboCaseyWKRP on Jul 30, 2009 4:33 PM EDT reply actions
I believe they tried that at an Orioles game last year
I don’t really remember the actual impact, but my gut reaction is that it was minimal.
That said, I am getting more and in favor with teaming up with www.whodeyrevolution.com and staging a Cincinnati-wide Project Mayhem.

while who dey revolution didn't accomplish what it set out to (hiring a GM)
it was followed up with a slew of big-time offseason moves and a great draft so it wasn’t a total failure.
Rays fans tried it a couple seasons back, iirc.
Seems to have done wonders, although, that could be a coincidence and irrelevant.
