Reds Acquire Wladimir Balentien from the Mariners for Robert Manuel
The Reds have made a deal with the Seattle Mariners, acquiring outfielder Wladimir Balentien for RHP Robert Manuel.
Here are Balentien's numbers for 2009:
Not that impressive, eh? His overall minor league numbers are much better, so there is hope. In just over 2400 career minor leauge PAs, he's hit .273/.345/.526, hitting over 20 home runs at three straight levels.
Honestly, I like this deal. Balentien was at one time considered untouchable. The fact that the Reds managed to get him for Manuel, who is good but not outstanding, is a good sign. Balentien just turned 25 and has the potential to provide the Reds with some right-handed pop that they need.

His wikipedia page is kind of concerning
“On July 25, 2009, Balentien was designated for assignment by the Mariners after struggling to make consistent contact. He hit .213 with 4 home runs and 13 RBIs in 155 at bats to that point in the season.”
Mariners clearly trying to rid themselves of unusual names.

Sickels from his 2008 Prospect book
Last year I called Balentien a Curacao version of Rob Deer: tons of strikeouts, some walks, a low batting average. Moving up to Triple-A in ‘07, he made a concerted effort to improve his plate discipline. Although his walk rate actually dropped, he cut his strikeouts by 30%, and as a result he added some 60 points of batting average. If the strikeouts remained steady, I’d write the batting average increase off as a fluke/good luck/Pacific Coast League effect, but having seen him play in person, it sure looked like genuine improvement. He was no longer trying to pull everything, and was more willing to go with the pitch. He didn’t look at all like the same player I saw swinging from the heels in Double-A. Balentien has always had a strong throwing arm, and he’s polished his outfield defense. His running speed is average, but he gets good jumps, reads pitchers well, and should be able to contribute some steals at the major league level. Given his erratic track record, this is a tough grade. If he sticks with the all-field approach and doesn’t try to pull everything, I think he can hit .270-.280 in the majors, with plenty of power and a good on-base percentage. If he goes back to his free-swinging ways, his career will be more Deerish. I am going to give him a Grade B+, because I think his progress was real. But there is risk here. He’s capable of being Rookie of the Year. He’s also capable of hitting .178 and getting stuck in Triple-A for a while.
I like this kind of acquisition for a marginal minor league reliever.

Velocity down. Location bad. Almost every time he pitched, it seemed, he gave up runs. Then he bitched about being sent down due to bad performance. I don’t like him.
I haven’t given up on Bray – Dave, and Chaz – but I thought he was dealing with serious arm injuries??
Maybe he's been hurt all year?
I’m just saying that judging a reliever on one season is a good way to make a mistake on him. They don’t pitch enough innings to tell their true level of talent.

if Burton really has had a resurgence of asthma
it could explaoin alot of his issues. Maybe if he gets that under control his strength will get back to normal. It’s worth seeing what happens aftr he’s treated for that, I think.
If he's been hurt, then I rescind my comments.
But I maintain that he’s had a shitty attitude and he’s been pitching BP this year. I don’t like him right now. I just found out I had asthma after years of not knowing and tripled my running endurance.. so it could have a big impact, and he was great last year. I’m willing to give him time because he’s youngish, has options, and we’re out of contention this year. But that’s the only reason. He doesn’t CURRENTLY, given recent form, belong on a competitive MLB roster.
i don't know
i think i’d be okay with being Dick Pole, my last name isn’t that much better, and plus I’d get to live the big league life style.

a precusor for a bigger deal or just or just pre-curser for no other deals getting done?

Stubbs/Bruce/Bailey/Alsono/Frazier/Veirka/Roinekie/Votto/Dickerson For Halladay?

Now that we got this guy, I hear the Reds have put all their other OFers on the trading block.
The phone is ringing off the hook, from what I hear.

So does Wlad get added to active roster right away?
We already have 4 OFs getting regular time in AAA right?
Also, he hits righties a bit better over his career, to the tune of a 867 OPS (812 vs. LHP). I’m hoping this means he platoons with NIx in RF and Rosales gets sent down.

We can use him to spy on the other teams
But beware, for the disembodied spirit of Marge Schott may use him to take control over Walt Jocketty.
Everybody's a jerk. You. Me. This jerk.
Well, we all know the Reds needed to pull some "W"s out of nowhere
but in all seriousness, I’m excited, but kind of upset that I’ll now never know why Manuel’s middle name was Mehmet.
If I had known you were curious
I could have tried to ask him at the games at citi field. You can actually go behind the visitor’s bullpen.
eh, it was just a meme here over spring training
I think everyone here thought he was hispanic, but then just confused. I think the true meaning of the name has been lost for centuries.

I wouldn't call Manuel a good player by any means
He’s a marginal bullpen arm, which we have a surplus of.

Love it
This exactly what the reds should be doing. Bottom-feed off the exhaust from other deals, until Halladay is dealt and the flood gates open for Arroyo and Harang to be packaged.
I had great optimism when we got Manuel, despite the criticism from others, and I still think he’ll be a quality pitcher in the majors. I’ll go ahead and project him for long relief, if there is such a thing anymore.
But when Balentien was designated a few days ago, I thought he’d be one of those guys that other teams would swoop in and grab. I’m quite impressed that Walt caught this one. Balentien’s ceiling is still unknown.
by Brian B on Jul 29, 2009 10:09 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
i really like this deal
Manuel seemed like a pretty good but utterly replaceable bullpen arm and Balentien certainly still has some potential. if you can ever trade middle relievers for everyday players you do it. every time. good work Walt.

Manuel Dig It
We traded a pitcher tied for the major league career ERA record. That’s just ducky. At least we got Wily Mo back without having to return Arroyo
But seriously, here are the last few relievers we traded away (of course some others have been released or moved on in the free agency market):
Brad Salmon (almost done)
Ryan Wagner (done)
Calvin Medlock (AAA for 3rd year)
Brian Shackelford (done)
Abe Woody (7+ era in AAA)
Jon Coutlangus (done, what happened to him?)
Jim Brower (Japan)
Marcos Mateo (unimpressive at AA, 25yrsold)
Julio Manon (35 in AA)
David Shafer (unimpressive at AAA, 26)
Russ Haltiwanger (done)
About half of these guys appeared to have some good worth (like good mlb numbers or really good milb numbers) when they were traded and didn’t pan out. The problem is that our return value has been as bad in most cases. Dan Perales, Kirk Saarloos, Buck Coats, Jerry Gil, etc.. History is working against us in that regard but also says that we won’t likely miss Manuel in 2 years.
